The tournament didn't go precisely as planned, but it did go and all things considered went very well. Mike Smith-Stoe won the Championship with a record of 2-1 and a Kill Ratio of 12-10. It all went down to the final game, in which his Austrians eked out a Nightfall win against Matt's Americans.

One of the tournament rules was that nobody could play the same nation twice. That made things very interesting for the players, many of whom were trying nations they had never played.

Oh, and the prizes were nice too ...

I met up with my friends again and we made up three of the four players in the Manoeuvre three-game tournament. It was a close one. Two of us had 2-1 wins and the other two ended 1-2. In the end the decision came down to kill ratio. Lucky for me I had eliminated at least one more unit in my previous plays. So I came out on top. The funny thing is that the other player with 2 wins was

This is the week that was...
7 Wonders 3
Combat Commander: Europe 1
Combat Commander: Pacific 1
King Philip's War 1
Manoeuvre 1
Scrabble 1
Slamwich 1

Manoeuvre gets the nod as this week's highlight game because I was reminded how much I liked this game this week with my serendipitous game session this week (my Prussians won 7-5 vs my friend's Russians at the end of the day).

Not much else to add at the moment. More tomorrow.

I think you've ended up liking 7 Wonders more than me*. I find that funny since I was really taken with it at first and you were lukewarm. Now I think things have reversed.

*Than is both a subordinating conjunction, as in She is wiser than I am, and a preposition, as in She is wiser than me.... Since the following verb am is often dropped or “understood,” we regularly hear than I and than me. Some commentators believe that the conjunction is currently more frequent than the preposition, but both are unquestionably Standard.

I got Manoeuvre at SaltCon. It seemed pretty fun and accessible so I wanted to give it a try. The nice thing about this game is that it has enough components in the box to play four two-player games at the same time. We had three contests playing simultaneously. Ellen, Mark, Bryce, Rick and Jim all greatly enjoyed the game. Ellen added it to her wish list. Even Shaea, who frequently lamented her cards, agreed it was worth another try.

Game One
Ellen's British defeated Shaea's French 8-7 at nightfall.
Game Two
Jim's Russians defeated Rick's Prussians 7-5 also at nightfall.
Game Three
Mark's Spanish defeated Bryce's Austrians 8-3 at nightfall.

I've played this a few times. Never felt like the dice were a cause for unearned victories or losses. Manoevre is much more about choosing when & what to attack IMO.

I used to feel this way about this game when I first got it, but the historical feel is in the army decks. With 8 armies, and a variety of tactics cards with different strengths of the armies I found this one of the few games that represented so many armies well.
I've always wanted to do a historical scenario setup variant of this, but lately I have been really enjoying it for how it emulates the flavor of an army, not necessarily a specific battle.

Also worth noting that you can have 2-4-6-8 people playing the game with only one copy. You'll need to share the dice, but you could have a mini-tournament in your house.

The only component "issue" (and I use the word issue lightly) is the boards. The card quality and token quality is actually quite good. If you are looking at getting into wargames at some point you may want to invest in a perspex/plexiglass sheet which solves the board/paper mat issue in a lot of wargames. Anyway, Manoeuvre is not historical and it is quite abstracted, but it has all the makings of a wargame for me. I never felt that the dice control the game, you may get the odd "ahhh crap, what was that" roll, but rarely will it have you flipping the tableninja....

This is a bit of stretch on the simulation part and I'm a bit reluctant to add it. It does however meet the critera of War + Euro mechanic. In this case its the Napoleanic Wars with a cool area control and card play. Playable in about 30/45 minutes a game.

I think it's a stretch to call this a Euro. Otherwise your definitions need to be so wide that all sorts of games meet the criteria. Not that I think terms like "Euro" (etc) matter particularly, but if you don't impose some limits what's the fun in the discussion?

Card management is common in wargames these days, as noted above. If you include Manoeuvre, it's a short step to Commands & Colors and thence to Combat Commander...

The area control aspect of Manoeuvre is a simplified form of terrain objectives. The type of battles being "simulated" were generally over in a day, and the winner was the army which held the field. It is important to remember that you can also win by eliminating the other player's units - not so Euro.

It does take a few turns for both sides to really come into contact, but I don't think that lasts throughout the game. Is that what you mean? I find it typically takes less than an hour with plenty of action during that time.

Enjoy. I do.

Played this against my wife (as the British) against me (as the Prussians). Possibly due to my wife's misunderstanding of what she could play during an attack at the start, and certainly due to her poorer positioning, I was ahead 4-1 by the midgame, with a much better position. I'd been killing her weaker units which came back to haunt me.

She finally got to the better part of her deck, and started doing some better coordinated attacks, and I wasted a lot of time surrounding a dug-in unit (8 + 3 (redoubt) + 2 (on hill) + 4 combat leader played in defense) only to see the five dice I was able to muster come up with 1,2,2,3,4 (4d8s + 1d10) added to my five strength unit for a "No Effect" draw. Sigh. She then chased around a couple of my units and finally eliminated my fifth unit and won the game, 5-4. A good comeback, and one that made her excited to play the game again. This time we'll not let so much time elapse with this ruleset so that she doesn't have to re-absorb it all.

It is only really just a game - too abstract to my taste. The game system was meant to show the different capabilities and characteristics of armies during the Napoleonic time. The game succeeds in that regard. But the raw graphics and out-of-proportion terrain square maps render the game less attractive to be a time-filler game when there are beautiful cards in many card games out there.....It's like chess. I feel limited by what it can offer.

I played this with my father for the first time today. When I was a kid, we played games like Chess and checkers, and I think the 8x8 board helped sell the game. We have played euroes and light wargames A&A D-day before, but in some ways this was a better gaming experience for both of us. The game was fairly easy to explain, and we had a pretty even game. I think we will play it again.

I was actually looking to trade Manoeuvre, but now I think I'll hold on to it for a while.

I still think it takes a bit too long for what it is, but that might be because I always play it vs. new opponents.

Five wargame reviews. John lays out what he likes, doesn't like and sums it up in a succinct review.

Dustin and I played this second. It was extremely close with ties in VP and destroyed units (4 each). I had one exhausted unit to his none giving him the victory. He played France while I was the Ottoman Empire. I really enjoy this game and we need to get it to the table more often.

At first glance, I thought the name of this game was "Cow Poop".
