I love this game. It's very fun and you learn something about the people you're playing with while you're playing. Don't play with people who take things too personally.

"I know, let's design an entertaining game for all the family.

Let's see now...malicious lying? Check
Prevent players from winning by persuading others that they're decietful? Check.
Expose personal and hurtful information about friends in order to win? Check.
Invent falsehoods that break relationships? Check.

"Oh, what fun we'll have."

I resent this despicable streak of vitriol masquarading as entertainment. A little wank of a game!

A QUESTION OF SCRUPLES

Why Is This on the List? This is NOT a stand-in for all party games; some party games are quite fun. AQoS, however, is not fun. If there was "truth in advertising" for boardgame blurbs, this would be the one for this abomination: Want to get rid of that post-dinner, post-bottle-of-wine relaxed feeling of comfort and goodwill towards all? Then play Scruples and just wait for frustration, anger, and hostility to flood back into you.

How Often Have I Played It Before 2015? Once, maybe twice.

How Often Have I Played It In 2015? Zero.

$2.99 at Goodwill. I'm not even sure I really wanted this, the 80's party games are killing me. However, the box is in solid condition and it has the instruction booklet as well as all the reply and ballot cards (all 252 dilemma cards as well after inventorying), and it was my last stop of the day.

Editors Note : We have taken out most of the graphic sex scenes

“Ok here is how it works. Do not tell any of the boys about this. I know you all gossip and bitch but this is between us. Got it?”

I promised I would not say a word and I kept to it. For a few months. I’d like to look back and think loyalty to Lorna kept my silence; the real reason was that it was not an experience I understood or would cast me in a good light by retelling.

Two weeks after Games Centre went bust I met Dave for a drink. Not long into the first pint, Dave looked away from me.

“Did you sleep with Lorna?”

I hesitated, worried that the truth might upset him.

“Paul, she slept with everyone at games centre, plus half of Neasden”

“Yes. I did”

His eyes moved back to me, and he smiled.

“Thought so. Odd experience wouldn’t you say?

“Rather. How did you put up with it for a year?”

“I could see why any one who has been there once would ask that. I was unhappy at home and it provided a safe haven. After a few fucks we agreed that a brother and much older sister routine would suit us much better. It worked for a year. She went else where for sex and so did I.”

“Why did it end?”

“I was going to college. That was my excuse. In truth, she is a very sad person. The more time we spent together the more she engendered a dread of growing old and being alone. At twenty that s the last thing you want on your mind. Fuck this, I really don’t want to get maudlin. ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’?”

The Lorna conversation was over.

“That would be my eighteenth viewing and your seventy third”

“All the more reasons to go.”

Thoughts of Lorna were purged by our ritual film of adventure with a happy ending.
I did enjoy Indiana Jones, but watching it with Dave elevated the film to a near mystical experience. As soon as the film began the cares of the world fell away from Dave, he spoke every line of dialogue to the empty cinema, like the last priest reciting the Lord’s Prayer to an empty church. Too transported to notice that only one follower shared the Eucharist.

What about when people post a reply to a question that basically states that they are completely unqualified to answer it.

"Yeah, I never played either of the games you are asking about, but I did see one of them played once at a convention as I was walking by. From my five second glance it seemed like it might fit the requirements you had, but to be honest I didn't read your requirements. Anyway, I'd thought I'd just take up some of everyone's time to post this. Don't forget to give me a thumb and gold because I helped you.

Traditional-style Party Games

1986 | 4-12pl

Players are presented with moral dilemmas and have to guess how others would handle them. A discussion type game, most suited for a small and intimate gathering where people know each other well. Almost more an ice-breaker than a game. NB: some of the cards suggest immoral situations.

The original relationship-destroying game. The questions are carefully phrased such that no matter what you answer, it's wrong to some degree. From a contemporary review:

"With 'Scruples' they aren't asking you to decide what's right or wrong, they're asking what you would do. Would you be willing to sacrifice your integrity for personal pleasure."

Naturally, whatever answer you give will be grounds for other people to be shocked. Likewise you can find that people you like are actually selfish turds. The game also permits lying about what you believe, which can be offensive as well. Good luck when you don't answer a question how another person expects that you should answer.

* The only available spot in the parking lot is reserved for the handicapped. You are in a hurry and won't be very long. Do you park there?

* While on a co-worker's computer, you accidentally erase an important file. There's no way to trace it to you. Do you fess up?

* While drinking in an out-of-the-way bar, you see a friend's spouse having a romantic tête-à-tête. Do you mention it to your friend?

* A good friend is in love and introduces you to the new sweetheart. You find there is a mutual attraction between you and your friend's lover. Do you repress your feelings?
