"Love one another."

After the Dasher went on to the happy rusting grounds, I need some wheels - cheap wheals. I found a classic 1966 Plymouth Belvedere for $175. A classic machine built during an era of powerful (and sturdy) cars. Some of my college friends were up to visit and as we pulled out of my grandma's driveway, I proudly proclaimed "I'm never spending more than $200 on a car again!"

My grandma lives on a hill and as we began our descent, I gave the classic beast some throttle to impress them with the Mopar power. Heh. About halfway to the 90% turn I began to decelerate for the corner. Or at least attempted to. Thump. Thump. Thump, thump, THUMP! "Guys. No breaks." "Come on, Daryl, don't mess around." "Seriously, no brakes." Everything went still and the inside of the car seemed strangely lit for a dark night. My best friend, who had recent abdominal surgery to remove a foot or two of intestine (Chrone's) was scrambling unsuccessfully for a seat belt. My friend in the front seat queitly reached over as if to grab the wheel, withdrew it, then reached again, back and forth a couple of times (still no idea of what he was trying to do). I had a moment to decide whether to ditch it in the orchard or try to make the corner at an even higher speed. Orchard trees cost a lot of $, so I made for the corner.

A Belvedere is a heavy sort of beast that is better at building momentum than cornering. We had no shot at making the corner. I don't know how the car didn't roll, but we flew off the road between a stack of roof trusses and a large pine straight toward a house. My friend went into the fetal position, trying told his innards close, should the worst happen. Fortunately, my vain attempts to corner had succeeded in removing the front right tire from its wheel. When we landed, gravel flying in through the windows, the car dug into the ground and stopped instead of barreling into the house. We were alive - and with minimal property damage!

Though the experience was one to remember, the joy of owning an inexpensive "classic" had lost it's luster. And my reputation as a safe and reliable driver was tarnished. My intestinal friend had to promise his wife not to ride when I was driving and to this day he drives when we get together. I eventually had the thing towed the the wrecking yard.

The 60's - muscle cars and drag racing! The second generation Barracuda was produced by Plymouth from 1967 - 1969. Three models of the A-body Barracuda were offered, the fastback, the notchback, and the convertible. Advertising of the day characterized the design as a combination of the better of two worlds: sporty european and yankee practicality.

In 1968 Plymouth offered the fastback with a hemi engine in a stripped down version built for drag racing. So much for yankee practicality! Drag racers Ronnie Sox and Buddy Martin had great success winning in the professional drag racing circuit running the Plymouth Barracuda and other Plymouth muscle cars. Because of this success, which demonstrated the engineering capabilities of Plymouth, racing became a big part of Plymouth's marketing. For the 1968 model year you could win a copy of the Plymouth Drag Racing Game by visiting your local Plymouth dealer and entering the Plymouth Sweepstakes.

According to the game instructions, "The next best thing to a real taste of the Quarter is the Plymouth Drag Racing Game. So, get ready for all the excitement that Sox & Martin experience on the strip. You've got the green light!" The game included components for racing the Plymouth GTX, Road Runner and Barracuda.

This game is a great collector's piece of automobilia. And my car, a 1969 Barracuda convertible (one of only 1,494 built), is almost in the game. Just missed it by 1 year!

A cool musclecar collectible. This game was given out as a promo by Chrysler-Plymouth for the 1968 model year. The components include small cars molded in the shapes of the Plymouth GTX, Barracuda, and Road Runner. The box cover photo shows the Sox & Martin GTX and the game features color photos of drivers Buddy Martin and Ronnie Sox.
