One of my tax refund gifts to myself. The completionist in me will eventually pick up as much as I can, but this was the first expansion in my order. Played one scenario; I actually got a kick out of the Commissar Chip, which would be a nice handicap to give my fiance a chance ;-)

Played a few rounds of Memoir'44 Eastern Front and I set up the full campaign for No Retreat! The Russian Front for a solo game but I didn't end up starting it. Maybe today is the day!

I got a small bonus at work, and I figured that was a good enough reason to buy Eastern Front, along with the winter/desert board.

In anticipation of acquiring the terrain pack, hopefully in the near future, I also downloaded:
Memoir '44 Audie Murphy's Campaign
Memoir '44: The Vercors Campaign
Memoir '44: The Invasion of Crete

Memoir '44 -- played senario 41 in this expansion, with my Russians keeping the Germans from part of Stalingrad and doing a lot of damage in the process (10-6 win; a little lucky in that for a good chunk of the game I was picking up some useful cards and rolling well against the elite German units)

Warriors of God -- first outing of this since I bought it a little while ago; I did very poorly as the French, conceding at the end of turn 5

Piquet -- won 140-93; steady scoring with no spectacular hands this time

Agricola -- 3P game with (as usual) Agricola: Farmers of the Moor; came equal 2nd, IIRC, some way behind the winner (but at least I didn't have any empty spaces this time)

Eastern Front – 2005

In-print

The Eastern Front expansion is devoted to the ferocious battles that pit the Axis and Soviet forces against each other. Also included is a scenario drawn from the Russian-Finnish war, and an Overlord scenario of what turned out to be the largest tank battle in history: Kursk.

This pack is independent from the Terrain Pack and from expansion three - The Winter/Desert board map, which are not required to play the Eastern Front battles. Throughout, we have used the appropriate board (Winter board during Winter scenarios) in the depiction of each scenario, but purely for visual purposes.

--72 Plastic Piece Miniatures (Brown - Russian):
--------42 Infantry Figures
--------24 Armored Vehicles
--------6 Artillery Pieces
--73 Cardboard Counters and Tiles:
--------1 Political Commissar Chip Counter
--------44 Double-Sided Terrain Hex Pieces
------------Winter Tiles
----------------Trenches
----------------City Ruins
----------------Russian Village
----------------Forest
----------------Ravine
----------------Marshes
----------------Hill with forest
----------------Hill with village
----------------Frozen River
----------------Factory
--------10 Double-Sided Round Markers
--------4 Double-Sided Obstacle Tiles
------------Winter Field Bunker
------------Winter Dragon Teeth
--------14 Double-Sided Special Forces Badges

New Rules:
Political Commissar
Russian Command Rules
Blitz
Battle Star Token
----Camouflage
Sniper
Cavalry (horse)
Finnish Ski Troops
Frozen rivers/lakes

I just received Eastern Front in the mail yesterday and started printing out the scenarios not included in the book. I noticed a couple of them (I think Counter-Attack at Sverchkovo may have been one of them) had the Air Pack symbol. Does this mean I need the Air Pack or that it's compatible with the Air Pack? I didn't see anything out of the ordinary on the map that would have led me to believe I needed the Air Pack.

The air pack is optional in all scenarios except for Air Aces Campaign in the Second Compaign Book... as far as I can tell.

As the Fifth Game at Christmas, my Secret Santa gave to me: 72 Russians Chillin'

Bring on the vodka and Kahlúa! Huh? Oh, wrong White Russians... These are the snow-covered guys that dug in against Hitler's Eastern Front and valiantly fought them back during the bitter winter conditions of '41-'45.

I raise a glass in honor of those soldiers and my Secret Santa for sending such a great gift!

I'm also looking for this expansion, and/or these:
Memoir '44: Campaign Book Volume 1
Memoir '44: Campaign Book Volume 2
Memoir '44: Sword of Stalingrad
Memoir '44: Terrain Pack
Memoir '44: Operation Overlord (probably wouldn't want this unless it was bundled with one or more other expansions, from this list or otherwise)

I think Memoir handles snipers in a good way.

When I have a Sniper for my side, I use him to harrass my enemy and to put pressure on reduced units, and the ability to fire when moving into terrain, makes him great for hunting weak units. And since he doesn't count as a medal, I am not afraid of losing him. And if the enemy goes after the my Sniper that is one attack where he can't work towards a medal.

When I have a Sniper as the enemy, I have to protect my weak units against the 5 hex range and Snipers ability to fire 1 die even if I am in protective terrain. I also have to decide if I am going to pay attention to the sniper and use an order to try to hit him or just let him take shots at me while I go after other units that gives me medals or try to run for objectives.
I think the brilliance is in the decision the opponent has to make as to whether he will attack the sniper or try to avoid him.

Bought this and the Pacific Theater shortly after buying Memoir '44. I think Memoir is a fairly fun and light wargame. Only problem is I fail to understand why I bought these two expansions. I've had them for well over a year and have yet to play them.

I'm sure they are fine expansions...but truth be told, I was fine with the base game for the time being...

Well that's their cunning plan.

I've got the Pacific Theatre and there's some great stuff there too. The dawn rules, especially, are really good.
