There are 9 sections of the maze, with twists and turns on the underside. You arrange them randomly, so you don't know what the maze looks like. The magnet starts in the center, with the wizard, and you work your way outward. When the wizard's staff goes down, the magnet has stayed behind, and you know there is a wall there, so you place a hedge. You work your way out of the maze to your corner, first one to their corner wins. Neat, sturdy components, and in decent shape. Only $.99, so this came home with me. Rochester Savers.

I left behind several varieties of Battleship, including a neat looking one in a deep square box, but it was $6.99 so I left it.

There was also a Yahtzee Jr with red dice for $.99, and a KimPossible game with black and white indented dice that I left. Oh, and two copies of Husker Du (and one over at the GW). There was a Clue with figures for $.99 that I almost got.

When we left our house, it was sunny and almost springlike. We didn't even wear coats, but we brought them in the car just in case. Just before Rochester, we hit strong winds and blowing snow, enough that I thought we might have to sleep at Steve's house or a motel, but we drove out of it before we hit Rochester, and it calmed down somewhat for our trip home.

It's been a snowy windy blustery day in my section of Southwestern Ontario today. I heard the visibility outside of town was zero at times. Especially in the afternoon with the wind.

It's calmed down now.

Oh, we have royalty...tastes like chicken!

Level 1 - Room 1 - Entryway
Leaving the safety of the outside world, you have descended into a small square room, roughly 20 feet across in all directions. Your torchlight illuminates the entire room. The floor is rough, uneven stone and there are a few small bones in one corner. Giving the bones a quick poke with your sword yields nothing - you decide these are not valuable enough to bother with. Plus, old bones in a deadly dungeon is a bad omen. Seeing nothing of interest, you make your way across the room to an exit on the opposite side.

Level 1 Challenge: 1d100 = (83) = 83

As you make your way you realize that an ancient arcane magic is at work here. Make an Intelligence Check at DR15 to avoid the magic or suffer 4 damage.

This is a Skill Challenge. To pass this challenge, you will use the Geek Randomizer to roll 1d20 and add in your relevant modifier. So if this is a Dexterity check and your Dexterity Modifier is +2, you would enter 1d20+2 into the die roller. Do this now. Future skill challenges will assume you know how to make this check. Please make your check now.

Better...but still not good enough!

Ouch! This challenge proved to be too much for you, adventurer. You suffer 4 damage and now have 1 hitpoint remaining. You dust yourself off and continue onwards. As you proceed down the hallway, you discover a treasure!

Level 2 Treasure: 1d100 = (48) = 48

Spellbook
mb You have obtained an old leather spellbook of unknown origin. Most likely left behind by some Wizard of ancient lineage. (You will receive a Spellbook Microbadge).

Finally, at the very end of this twisting hallway, you come to a set of stone stairs which lead down. You proceed to Level 3 of the Dungeon of Doom!

Level 3 - Room 1 - Confounding Room
The room you descend into makes your head spin. It seems the mirror-like surfaces on the walls are causing you some depth-perception issues as well as reflecting the torch-light in odd ways. You decide to cross this room to the exit as fast as you can and rid yourself of this headache.

Level 3 Challenge: 1d100 = (44) = 44

As you cross the room you realize that you’ve just stepped on a pressure plate mechanism. Make a Dexterity Check at DR15 or suffer 4 damage.

Don't worry...I always have room for the less dexterous minions like yourself in my dungeon!

This challenge proved to be too much and you suffer 4 damage. You now have 0 hitpoints remaining.

You have descended into the depths of the Dungeon of Doom and have died. With a hero’s resolve you withstood what you could but in the end the forces of darkness were simply too much for you to overcome. A valiant attempt - your next of kin recover your treasures and so your legacy lives on.

Thank you for playing in the RPG Geek Dungeon of Doom. Your initial geeklist post above has been tipped by your Dungeon Master the amount of geekgold equal to the gold you have found in the dungeon (other adventurers may also tip you as they feel appropriate). Any items you found will be given to you as microbadges shortly.

You are free to post on the The Official Dungeon of Doom Commiseration Thread to discuss your victory or defeat. Your DMs don’t want to hear your bad beat story - they have other adventures to run! Go to the tavern like other slain heroes and tell the bartender instead.

Farewell, brave adventurer! Until our next Encounter...

Bought this for 2 euro at local second-hand store(?). Missing the magnet but will hopefully be replaced by a fridge or whiteboard magnet.

QUESTION: I've been wondering what's the correct English word for these self-service second-hand indoors stores where the owner rents out empty numbered shelves (on a weekly basis) where you put stuff with tags containing the price and the shelf number but the store takes care of the cash registers and such. After the week's over, you get the amount sold minus the weekly rent.

In Finland this is called flea markets but I was thinking if there's a more specific term in English. Consignments stores are somewhat similar, but based on commission per item instead of a weekly rent. Right? Is second-hand shop or flea market a better description then?

The flea market term is common here, but the few I've seen had each vendor handling their own money, rather than a shared cashier.

I always considered 'real' flea markets to be places where the persons selling the stuff is present themselves (so you can haggle!). Here you have a joint cashier (the store owner) and you only have to be present when you add stuff to 'your' shelves, and when you empty them at the end of the week or whatever period you rented it for. Sometimes the term 'self-service market' (translation from Finnish) is used.

I think with vendor booths you as the seller would still be present, right?

So this not a common phenomena in the US and Canada? In the small city where I work, we only have four thrift stores (of which two are minuscule) but six of these self-service flea markets. Mostly clothes (children's), glassware and books on the shelves but sometimes even board games. Sadly, the prices are quite high compared to the thrift stores.

There are generally called "antique stores". They are generally just like you described. Owner of the building rents space to people to see their "antiques" and the owner handles the sales transactions, even perhaps calling the vendor if you wish to offer a lower price. Usually, these places sell their wares for a very high price because they have to pay for the space they rent.

I've visited several long-time, self-serve places with a central cashier calling themselves "Flea Market" in Tulsa, Oklahoma City, Kansas City, and now in Shreveport, so it seems to be a flourishing business model in the central US. I've only seen a couple of places where the seller was actually in their own booth handling their own transactions, and that was in "temporary" flea markets that set up in the fair grounds or some similar place on the weekends only.

So, mazzame, I think if you call them a "flea market" then everyone will know what you are talking about.

(Edited to fix typos.)

Thanks for all your comments, I was just curious to find the right word for it. I think self-serve market is closer to the right description but from a marketing standpoint flea market is a more well-known concept for the general public.

It seems to be a flourishing business model (as claymore_57 states), and interesting as well due to its simplicity (the cashier out-sourced), minimum temporal commitment from the seller and the aggregate market at work (more shelves --> more people browsing).

claymore_57 wrote:

I'll think I'll use self-serve flea market or just plain flea market from now on. Thanks!

Version: Magical Maze. Also 99¢. Complete except for the "treasure magnet" which is probably still stuck in the intestine of a 2-year-old. Probably no play value for adults, but may be useful when I've got younger visitors (who are old enough not to put things in their mouths).

Edit: add correct version.

Another fluffy game I played at Mark's house. This one has a really cool magnetic wizard in the middle of the board, you're trying to find the path out through the maze by memory. When you're wrong, a magnet under the board makes the magician move his arm and it's the next player's turn.

Also at Value Village - Goblin's Gold (my copy is called Magical Maze) for $1.99.

Complete down to the rules, box has major tear.

Not sure what the heck I'm going to do with this one! My boy is not nearly old enough yet to play, and while I can talk my friends into playing Enchanted Forest, I don't think I'll have much luck talking them into this one.

Bought because it looked unique and there may have been some interest on this site...... oh well.

The weekend's over far too fast, and it's back to work I go. Hi Ho it is not. It is a bit of a rest, though, as the weekend was spent reorganizing the computer / games room and building, disassembling and rebuilding new IKEA furniture for said room. Have you ever noticed how the illustrations sometimes don't reflect reality? I eventually had to throw the booklet away and just assemble the 3D jigsaw puzzle myself. By comparison, a day in the office is a breeze.

The end of the day comes, and I have a bag of clothes in the car from the wife. She wants to donate them to a thrift store, and I'm happy to oblige. I'm assuming it's because these are last year's styles and she wants room in the closet for this year's fashions. I think I'm smart enough to not even contemplate that they just don't fit her anymore. Ah crud. Maybe I'm not so smart. Honey, if you're reading this, you're absolutely as stunning now as you were the day we met. Even more, in fact.

(Yes, I have a comfortable couch. I made durn sure of that!)

So even though I've been to the thrift stores on the weekend, I have a ready excuse to drop by some on Monday. I hit the two that are basically on my way home, with just the smallest of detours. The second store was as barren on Monday as it was on the weekend, but the first store had some new stuff.

What really caught my eye was Eco Trap. Cool name! Let's take a look. Oh for the love of Aunt Marigold's Whipped Cream and Potato Salad! It's not a game! It's an actual bug trap! Why is this on my games shelf!

Disappointed, I continue the scan. Here's a new box -- Magical Maze. Navigate the wizard through an invisible maze. Sounds like an interesting kids' game. And if there's one thing I'm a sucker for it's interesting kids' games and abstracts. OK, two things I'm a sucker for -- interesting kids' games, abstracts and old bookshelf games. Right. Three things...ok, I'll stop now...suffice to say I could not refuse this one.

The game is in good shape and complete, except that it's missing the magnets. I should be able to find suitable replacements, but it's looking like less of a bargain now. If I get it working, I'll get my money's worth from it though.

Magical Maze, $3 from the Salvation Army Thrift Store. In good shape, but missing the magnets.

Someone should make a Geeklist of the weird crap that ends up on game shelves at thrift store. I've seen lots of boxes that belonged on the other end of the store.

I think I found the answer to how this happens the last time I went shopping with my wife. Midway through the trip, she decided she didn't want something in her cart anymore so she just stuck it on the shelf that she happened to be by, despite the fact that she picked it up ten aisles ago.

I think I found the answer to how this happens the last time I went shopping with my wife. Midway through the trip, she decided she didn't want something in her cart anymore so she just stuck it on the shelf that she happened to be by, despite the fact that she picked it up ten aisles ago.

This is exactly why I have instituted rule number the second -- walk the store. Among others, I've picked up "My Word" in a pile of CDs, got "Zen Blocks" from the kitchen accessories section and saw "Balderdash" mixed in with some pots and pans.

You never know when someone is going to mis-shelve things.

Also known as Magical Maze; which is what I have; http://www.boardgamegeek.com/game/2002

It is complete; this is one I am a little undecided on; so get it before I change my mind. The magnet I think has fallen off the wizard (it looks to be there, but the token doesn't stick like it should. Could be easily replaced.

Opening bid on this must be at least 10 GG.

ROUND 1 OFFER RESULTS: Warbanner for 10GG; this will be a big loss of $ as the box is prett decent size, but since I gave a minimum amount - I'll let it go for it. Boomr's offer just encompassed too much. At the micro level - his bid was equal to Warbanner's 10/13 is 10 GG and Warbanner was first.

THIS IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE.

$1.56 at Goodwill.

But, no directions and it's missing the gold coin and the magnet in the Wizard are missing. These are the things that make the whole game work. So, appears not such a deal.

I'm trying to make a substitute for the coin and magnet.

I replaced the missing pieces with nice & powerful magnets from an education store. Cost $5.10. So, not so much of a bargain. But, we have enjoyed the game with our grandson.

In Goblins Gold (also called Magical Maze) the board looks the same every time, but underneath are nine randomly-placed maze tiles. Players must find their way through the hidden maze by trial and error by moving the wizard. The wizard tries to pull along the magnetic "gold" underneath, but drops it when trying to cross a wall in the maze.

This is interesting. How are the maze tiles randomized? It sounds very similar to the Gusher mechanism in item #1.

Here's an interesting find. $1.50 complete.

I had never seen this game before, it's a good one for my kids. We've played it three times already. It's all luck, but I think it would appeal to anyone who likes mazes.
