THRILLER

Finished watching a 2006 BBC series (The State Within), full of drama with various baddies in government and the private sector killing each other and drumming up a war in Central Asia. I'd call it a thriller.

So what's thriller mean? As a noun, it refers to a suspenseful and shocking bit of entertainment - TV, movies, books. Simple. Less specifically, a thriller can be something that thrills - a really close game with a dramatic ending would be a thriller.

Thriller doesn't come into the purview of etymologists until 1889, with a first printed use in Pall Mall Gazette making an observation in a negative review that is timely even in 2015: "It is always painful to see clever actors..wasting their energies on a worthless play... It is seldom that we are treated to a more bald and empty production than this invertebrate ‘thriller’."

Naturally, this was formed from the verb to thrill. To thrill means to cause to experience a sudden feeling of excitement or emotion, or to cause something to tremble or quiver. To thrill was seen as long ago as the 1330s, originally meaning to bore or to pierce or to perforate, and later taking on a sense of to hurl or throw. It wasn't until the 1590s or so that the current meaning took hold, a metaphor for being pierced with emotion. Now the emotional sense remains, and the perforating and hurling thrill is gone.

To thrill's forerunner was Old English þyrlian/thyrlian (to pierce), based on þyrel/thyrel meaning hole.

Fun Fact: A thrill, as in a thrilling experience, came in the 17th century.

Thrills. Might be just Canadians who will know these, at least the new marketing campaign is truthful.

It's not the kill it's the thrill of the chase. Loved this song and remember long parties in high school with this song among others playing in the background.

Apparently videos re-enacting Michael Jackson's Thriller with Legos are so popular it has become it's own cult genre. Some of them are pretty good, but this was my favorite.

Thrill
Ok, so I like adventure. Why? Because I love the thrill. And games are full of thrills. The thrill of the chase. The thrill of the hunt. The thrill of being the first to make a discovery, of having the most gold, of racing my car dangerously around the hairpin corner. I love the thrill of seeing my robot careen successfully around the board. I love the thrill of shaking 3 fives and 2 sixes in a single throw. I love the thrill of taking over a much sought after province in Spain. I love the thrill of tiptoeing undetected past Mother Superior with a bottle of gin in my hand. Am I easily thrilled? Maybe. But games give me the thrill as much as any movie ever has. Often times even more. I have played games standing up due simply to the edge-of-your-seat thrill.

The game played so quickly, another quick game was needed. I proffered an old game that I had yet to play, a dexterity game with wagering involved. We played the non wagering version first.

Basically you bid your limited tokens in a blind bid and the loser (lowest bid) has to push a disk (one of three possible sizes) onto the crowded playing area without any of the other pieces falling off - not easy as it sounds as I quickly found out. Any pieces falling off cost penalties (1 for a small piece, 2 for a mid-sized and 3 for a large piece).

I was out within two goes (I dislike dexterity games, even Hamsterrolle). Leo soon followed so another win for Scott.

There was just enough time for another round, this time with the wagering which also included a small weight that the pusher could optionally add to a piece on the playing area to help influence the path of the moving pieces when adding a new piece. All players can wager on if pieces will fall off or not - if you wager incorrectly you lose one of your four wager cards, if correct you keep your card and gain a small token. Three small tokens (correct wagers) gives you another of the main bidding tokens.

None of this made any difference to the game result - I went out quickly, followed Leo and another win for Scott.

Ratings:

Scott (6)
Leo (7)
JimS (5.5)

Probably a game better suited to a family crowd (aunts, uncles, granparents, etc.) that EGC.

For starters, there's a special kind of thrill to a close game.

It tends to mean that the players are well-matched, the game is well-balanced and there's not much in the way of randomness (the latter being purely a personal bias), and the tension level goes up.

Last May I went to Cordoba (about two driving hours) to playtest a game. The designer wanted I play it with other person living there and I agree because there are a really big gaming association in Cordoba and they made an event for that day.

I played the new developing game for three hours and then move to the association facilities. There were about 25 people playing when I arrived and started playing some dexterity games like Bamboleo and Hamsterrolle and then, someone put Thrill on the table.

You've got to put a "coin" into a platform (with many other coins) and then push a big piece until a line and try not to make fall the coins. It has auctions, dexterity, luck, ..., it was a superb game!

But one player forgive to stop at the line and the coins keep falling while he continues pushing and pushing. No one says nothing, because we were shocked by the situation, and then, the player stops and says: "What am I doing?" and everybody started to laugh for ten minutes.

The gameplay was broken and we finished that game, but the situation (and the laughs) was priceless!!
