Okay, back to the beginning now. And this really was the game that set me on my path to Board Gaming. An awesome game that I still love playing today. I certainly didn't think twice when Games Workshop brought out the 3rd Edition recently.

From their first edition to their third, I've got them all. Some might consider this a miniatures game but they're in the minority. It's a board game with miniatures no doubt but first and foremost a boardgame. The sides are asymmetric which has its pros and cons but make for a great game of swapping sides to see who can do better for any given side. I like the endless hoard concept much like the Spartans holding out at Hell's Gate or the Zulu attack on Roarke's Drift, only in space. There's no question this game has a solid fan base and I'm one of them. Long live the Emperor.

Second Edition w/ extra Genesteelers, Terminators, and Standard Marines. I will include a copy of the 1st edition rules as well. The box is battered and has a hole in the cover. The components are in very good condition.

There are 16 terminators, a Space Marine tactical squad, and a blob of extra genestealers.

Games Workshop, English. Game is incomplete, but I've done an inventory on what is missing. I have pictures as well, so if you are interested, please send me a message. I'm posting this because there might be someone interested in completing an incomplete copy, or for the figures, plus it's quite rare and hard to find.

Manuals/Books: All missing.
Tiles: Includes all but one tile, 1 sq wide / 1 sq deep deadend.
Figures: Includes 16 Genestealer figurines (not painted), missing Terminator figures, and 4 Genestealer figurines.
Misc tokens: Includes all 20 doors, 1 C.A.T token, 7 Overwatch counters (missing 1), Includes all Genestealer Blips and all Team A/B Flamer Blibs.
Dice: Missing 3 out of 5 dice.

Box: Is worn, taped on the inside to prevent the box edges from lifting, and has a torn corner on the top of the box. Top of box has been pushed down a bit from weight of other board games on top.

Components: are in good shape overall except some of the doors, which have been damaged over time from being put in the plastic slots at the bottom. Tiles are in great shape as are the tokens and figures.

If you have any questions, let me know.

This game was the most asked for Christmas present on many a geek's list for the past 20+ years. Mothers everywhere hate this game because it is the sole reason why their little darlings stopped believing in Santa Claus.

Also the genestealer minis really hurt when you step on them.

Prelude - The Tavern
The barkeep, Sama, has been busily serving patrons this fine fall day. The harvest festival is nearly upon the town and the locals are getting in their last cozy visits to their favorite watering hole before tourists flourish here and take the place over for a week. You’ve already been mistaken for a harvest-goer by more than a few locals. You look around and see a few friendly faces among the crowd. Perhaps one of them would make a fine adventuring partner on your journey. Then again, it may be best to go this alone. That choice remains yours. In the meantime, one well-dressed halfling patron, who may have had more than his share of ale, comes up to you and offers to play a simple game for a wager. He describes the game as follows:

~ The Barbarian Dice Game ~

“You see, it’s easy. Even a child can play! This game requires us to cast these strangely shaped gaming pieces which the gods call ‘dice’. I’ve got five such pieces, one with four sides, one with six sides, one with eight, one with ten and one with twelve. For some reason, Barbarians are fondest of the 12-sider but I’ve no idea why. Anyway, we roll all five dice each and we compare results. For every like-sided die that you roll higher on, you get a point. Whomever has the most points is the winner. You, fine friend, break all ties. How can you lose?! What do you say? Shall we wager?”

You may decline to play or you can wager 1 or 2 gold. This game is available to both you and your adventuring partner separately if playing in a 2P game. The choice is now yours. If you decide to wager and play, please use the geek-randomizer to roll five separate rolls: 1d4, 1d6, 1d8, 1d10 and 1d12.

You strike the gnoll with a pair of solid blows, but it swings the severed arm at your head as well! You find 1d4+2 = (1) + 2 = 3 gold but suffer 1 HP damage.

On each post that you make, please include your Class, HP=X, SP=Y, Gold=Z, Equipment where X, Y, and Z are your current hit points, sanity points, and gold, and Equipment includes any items purchased or acquired during the game that provide bonuses to you.Simply start your post with this information (e.g. Rogue, HP=5, SP=3, Gold=2, Sword +1). This will save the GameMaster huge efforts from tracking and looking it up.

Chapter 1-4 - Wyvern in the Wind
Finally! You have arrived at the base of the mountains proper. A menacing sight for sure - the mountains look like they go on forever and one could get lost in there for all eternity. Fortunately you still have your father’s maps. They are faded, worn and heavily creased... but still serviceable after all these years. You take out his notes to make sure you’re prepared. As you read, a shadow quickly creeps up across the page. Clouds? You didn’t see any and besides, the shadow moved too fast. You glance up - in the sky overhead is circling the most menacing creature to which you’ve ever borne witness! A WYVERN! A terrible flying lizard who makes its home in the mountains. It circles as if looking for something. You are too afraid to move and too smart to stand still.

Will you stand and face this menacing foe? Is it time to run? Or perhaps you have another trick up your sleeve. How do you respond?

I had the second edition of this one. Patched with some space marines from somewhere else, as the thing was missing them when I bought it quite used. It was pretty good, but I had first played someone's first edition copy which had some neat rules with a timer and reaction that weren't in the second edition.

I heard the third edition was going to reintroduce the timer and old rule set's reaction rules, and the mini's weren't going to be half-assed painted by some random eBay seller and botched further by me.

So I bought the third edition and sold or traded the second edition. I can't say it was a good purchase, I haven't gotten to play it since I bought it, Claustrophobia kind of fired space hulk and so I threw away 100 dollars.

Another reason to have a series of rooms is to sneak around and blast the hell out of stuff - weird alien stuff in this case. One design problem here is how to deal with doors, locked or not. The slabs used in Space Hulk never felt quite right to me - where do they go?

First edition Space Hulk. At that time I had never played anything like it. The background was fascinating as were the Genestealers and the way they procreated. They were truly terrifying beasties.

All the fluff thrown in the missions evoked an "Aliens" feel but still firmly established the game in the Warhammer universe.

And what a game. Strategic and tactical decisions aplenty with just the right amount of luck. I had many a tense moment with this one. The expansions just kept adding to that. With plenty of scenarios from White Dwarf, this one kept my interest for years and is still my all time favorite.

I don't care what anyone says the third edition just isn't the same, It was nice that they threw a lot in there but almost any scenario with a Librarian is broken especially in conjunction with a flamer. Just keep casting Force Barrier until you run out of psi points. By that time your squad has marched to it's objective. 10 turns is a long time to keep the genestealers at bay and if there is a flamer involved it just compounds the problem.

I'd forgotten about Space Hulk. Jack and I used to play it quite a bit, and Jack brought it up for a Sunday game. I was rusty on the rules and didn't move half my Space Marines for the first couple turns, and we were overwhelmed before I could either "cleanse" or "burn." The Genestealers were relentless and our Storm Bolters must have been made by the lowest bidder because we had a LOT of jams.

It wasn't long before my second Flamer went down and the mission was a disaster.

Jack reckons this one of his favorite games, giving it a 10/10. He's not far wrong. The game has great theme realized through mechanics that provide maximum game with minimal verbiage. I have a copy of the new edition -- still in shrink! -- but I've never seriously thought about bringing it to the table because I just can't see how it would improve on the original. Maybe I'll sell it to put Jack through college.

This game is highly regarded by me, even though I do not play it as frequently as I would like. Utter genius. Decades before its time. I love every edition ever made. Yes, even 2nd ed.

One of the games I have fully redesigned and pimped.

Pros:
* Theme ripped off from the Aliens movie franchise
* Good to outstanding component quality depending on edition
* Very tactical and has some strategy
* Fairly quick game play
* Lots of tension
* Not too random even though it uses dice

Cons:
* 3rd ed tiles can warp obscenely
* No gamebox insert in any edition
* Warhammer 40,000 theme pasted over the superior Aliens theme
* Nearly always expensive
* OOP
* Produced by Games Workshop

I'm at the point where I have nostalgia for both Terminators and Space Marines of the Hicks/Hudson variety. I'm also glad that Terminators are wearing all that armor and *still* get ripped to shreds.

Yeah, Games Workshop stole all their best ideas. But, hey, at least they had good taste.

29 AUGUST - 4 SEPTEMBER 2011

Another week of lovely thrift finds to start off September and the winner this week was a bit of a no-brainer.

But before we get to that, let's cover the other stuff. It was definitely a good week for wargames, as there was Thirty Years War: Europe in Agony for a gobsmacking $2, Wings of War: Famous Aces for $2, Memoir '44 for $1, and Battle Cry for 75¢.

Euros were well represented with Nacht der Magier for €4, Battlestar Galactica for £2, Puerto Rico for $2, AND a remarkable Game of Thrones (with the expansion) for only $2.

The trains did not fare well in quantity, but did in quality with a nice C&O/B&O for $1.50.

But it was Ameritrash who came through with the BIG prize, the Thrift Find of the Week, because

found Space Hulk AND the Deathwing expansion AND the Genestealer expansion for a grand total of $3. Now, that is a thrifty price. Well done.

My first TFOTW - thanks for the nod.

That was a great week for me, and like someone prophesied in the list, it sure seemed like I burned my thrift karma for the rest of the year.

Getting an incomplete Adeptus Titanicus at the same thrift was a bonus find with the 1st ed Space Hulk. All I need now is to have the same parent who dropped them off to bring the empty expansion boxes in... whistle

Fresh in the main doors, a couple of games were an instant buy.

Let's Take A Hike, Onirim and Friday were all picked up in an instant. Also bought a copy of the newer version of Top Race, to get the additional maps that my old copy doesn't have.

Then...

Me and Staffan with a Space Hulk and Heimlich & co

...the day that I never thought I'd see: a copy of the first version Space Hulk was just lying around in the used section, waiting for someone to pick it up.

A German copy, with rules and scenarios in German, but for 48€ only? Instant buy as soon as the dizzyness settled!

German first edition. A bit tricky to find rules and scenarios in English after the GW-purge of 2008, but I managed to find the English Space Hulk bible at least.

Played it yesterday, and it played well...! angry
