To continue what had now turned in to our Knizia fest Dan, myself, Amanda, Kester and Paul A went to build a high society.
Kester's luck was very mixed, he got himself a 5 but then a -5, he got a 7 but then a 1/2 while the rest of us didn't have much. Dan spent a lot on a x2 but only had a 3 to go with it. Amanda had a 6 & 4 but lost the 4 to the thief. Paul tried to catch up but spent a lot getting a x2 and nothing else. I didn't get in on much early on but got a 1 & 2 towards the end.
We were now down to four cards, the last 2x to end the game, the 8, 9 & 10. It was all getting very tense. The 10 was out first and I had to pay to get something and hoped I had enough left over. Paul had taken the risk something else would come out and was lucky the 9 came out and he bid a high amount to secure it and 18 points. Then we flipped it and we were going all the way as the 8 came out, no-one could really afford to bid without risk of coming last but Kester had nothing to lose and got it, getting him to 7.5.
It turned out Paul had spent way too much on his two cards, he only had 10 left while the rest of us had our 20's or 25's still left.
Leaving me the win with 13.
I always feel like playing Money after this, not sure why, I guess I played them both together when they first came out. Sadly, we couldn't find a copy of Money anywhere.

We've dusted off a surprisingly high number of games this month! I have been pushing for some of these to get to the table for some time - not quite sure how they all hit the table in the same month!
Dust level - 114 months (well, kind of!): Wildlife Adventure
This one might be a slight cheat, as somewhere in that period we sold our original copy of Wildlife Adventure, and then reacquired it a couple of years later when we had kids and realised that it would be good for them (better than Expedition, which we play ourselves, as that's a German version). However, we have owned a copy for most of the 10 years that it hasn't been played, so I'm including it here. I tried it out this month to see if it would be ok for the kids or not - I suspect they're still a little young for it, so it could well be another couple of years before it gets played again!
Dust level - 71 months (!!!!): ThinkBlot
I was beginning to wonder why we kept this game. I got it out to play with my 6 year old daughter in the end, as we never play it with adults. She quite enjoyed it, but I don't think she'd miss it if we disposed of it!
Dust level - 37 months: Cranium
I know this is a mass-market party game, but it's one we used to quite enjoy, so I'm quite surprised that it's been over 3 years since it's been played. Too much competition from similar games that do what it does just that little bit better I think.
Dust level - 23 months: Compatibility
This has always been a party game I enjoy more than most, but used to get played a few times every year, but we don't play party games as much as we used to, and this game has gathered dust for a bit as a result.
Dust level - 21 months: High Society
This has never exactly been a regular filler, but normally we manage to play it a couple of times a year, but it got missed entirely in 2011 for some reason, before being played twice this month.
Dust level - 21 months: Genoa
I've never been any good at this, so would never suggest it, but somehow in the break of nearly two years my husband has either forgotten how to play, or everyone has worked out how to, as I won, and my husband came abyssmally last, a complete role-reversal to the previous 8 games we've played of this!!
Dust level - 20 months: You Robot
I was showed this game, promptly bought it, played it once, and since then it's sat on the shelf! Partly because we don't play party games that much, but partly because it's a card game, so doesn't get seen amongst all the big box party games. Fun but silly.

I have to admit that High Society's ranking shot up because of the IOS app. It has allowed me to play a lot more games, and see the intrigue in the game. Essentially the game is about using your money to acquire works of art, and avoid hazards like a thief, a fire and a forgery. There are 10 paintings worth 1-10 points, 3 2x multipliers, and the 3 hazards (steals your lowest, cuts points in half and -5 points respectively.) Each turn you flip a card over and have to bid on it with money cards in your hand. You can only add in cards from your hand, never replacing, though if you pass you take your cards back. As soon as the forth multiplier card is flipped (the 3 doubles and the half) the game is over and the high score wins. Sounds pretty simple right? Well, before you figure out the high score, the person who has the least amount of remaining money (or people if there's a tie) are automatically eliminated. This creates a balance between gaining paintings and having money left to spend. Overall a fun, quick card game for 3-5 people.

This is another unique game. For some reason, I am thinking Joe may have played it after the date of my info, so maybe I'll have to wait for this one until 2013.

One night we were playing High Society and the 2-point tile came up:
and someone new to the game, who hadn't seen the box art for this edition, said, "We're bidding on a trophy wife?" So now we invariably call that card the Trophy Wife, and a couple of us bid much higher than we should for it.
