This is the absolutely best war game I have played by far (best with the expansion). It is because it contains everything. There is resource-management (harvesting, producing units and producing factories) complex and very deep order system. Card driven combat with the option to add special cards to your deck (you can choose between a lot of cards). Different player powers. Only one thing is certain : "There will be WAR!".

Yessir, not satisfied with simply choosing this game only once, I pick Starcraft as a returning contestant. The last play left me wanting to have this hit the table again, and given the difficulty in doing so, a Dictator's pick seems a good way to make sure this game gets some table time.

Forgive me for repeating myself.

Glad you brought it, I own the game and always enjoy it but don't get the opportunity to play it too often.

First time playing 2v2 so that was neat. Previously I'd only played 2 and 3 player. Paul did a great job teaching David, this is a hard game to teach, especially to someone who's not already familiar with Starcraft terminology.

Me and Ama formed one team and both went Zerg (Overmind and Kerrigan respectively)

David's not really familiar with the Starcraft Universe so he sorta just randomly picked Terran somehow (Mengsk) and teamed up with Paul's Protoss (Aldaris)

For starting leadership cards (Brood War) I went for the Overmind (extra Conqeust Points), Ama went for one that starts her with 43543 Zerglings and an extra base, David went with his special victory (pretty weak early game), and Paul started with two Dragoons (Conclave Fleet).

I got excited as we set up the map because I could tell I was going to abuse the layout so hardcore. I ended up placing my base in a distant corner of the galaxy, where my Conquest-Point engine would be free to spiral out of control for the entire game. And Ama had a pincer set up on Paul, so I knew he'd be tied up for most of the game. Just had to watch David.

Ama opened with a really fierce Zergling rush on Paul (two mobilize orders, two build orders in ADDITION to all of her free starting Zerglings... ama don't need no tech!), and successfully destroyed his army. This set the stage for the rest of the game -- Paul would be on the run while Ama tried to stamp him out. He ran pretty good, netting some small but short-lasting victories here and there with his superior units. But she eventually did eliminate him on turn 4 I think.

While that happened I was mostly fighting David, who teched to Wraiths and Stimpacks early but Ama's rush had given me the freedom to tech early as well. David was never able to get into my home base, and I eventually got army superiority as well (making it really hard for him to complete his special victory condition) so my Conquest Points won the game for us on turn 5 (ended turn 4 just one point short of victory, should have gotten it but I forgot to build a transport... doh!)

Yes, I was impressed by 2v2. I imagine it's better than 4 player FFA. Can't really imagine wanting to try 4 player FFA now anyway, since this has carved itself a niche as being one of the few games I've played that works great with teams (excluding dedicated team games)
Games like Starcraft lend themselves particularly well to team play.

Instead of a cold-war-like build up and standoffish diplomacy (or worse, some peace treaty), you have all out aggression, which is in my opinion how Starcraft should be played. It's not Twilight Imperium.

Also, some team games are really glorified versions of n-player games, with multiple people using each "player." For example, Pandemic and Stronghold. What makes teamwork meaningful in games like Starcraft, Tichu, and Roborally is that teammates have true hidden information from each other. The hidden action selection in Starcraft and Roborally sort of simulates real time, because teammates don't get to find out what their teammates did until afterwards so in effect they kind of did it "simultaneously."

When we played, we allowed communication between teammates but they had to be open. So if I told Ralph that (if possible) I'd like him to cap one of Paul's (build) orders, I had to say it publicly and let Paul hear our potential plan. I feel that the hidden token placement mechanism is really enhanced by teamplay in a true meaning of the word.

I tried 4er ffa in my first game of Starcraft. It was no fun at all. I'd much rather play Twilight Imperium, Eclipse, or Game of Thrones (ffa).

Although, I've been thinking about 2v2 Eclipse and Game of Thrones.

I was going to write it off as too long and too many units and techs and abilities to keep track of for a non-Starcraft fan (e.g instead of rock-paper-scissors units, it's rock-paper...- 13 units-...-scissors). Great to try it once, but too much homework for a less streamlined game.

Then I did some reading and thought about the game, and screw it, I want to play again. Great that Paul and Kweku/Ama both own this, since it's likely forever OOP. The order and tech systems are cool. Love how you queue up the orders (a little like the video game, I think?)

Thanks for teaching, Paul. This is one of those games I never want to teach.

Paul was on the run from Turn 1, and I had mineral shortage from Turn 1. On the defensive the whole game, and we both broke down in Turn 4. Think I should have colonized the mineral planet earlier.

2v2 was better than your average 2v2 conquest game, thanks to the special victory conditions and order tokens. But still haven't found the complete 2v2 conquest game that differentiates greatly from 1v1; think a game needs to be specifically designed with that goal in mind.
Starcraft is a little unnecessarily messy. I almost prefer Game of Thrones, which uses the same Petersen hidden action-token mechanism but is much more streamlined overall.

David, do you think Stracraft 2v2 is not sufficiently different from 1v1? I thought the fact that you don't know your teammate's hidden orders made teamwork actually meaningful.

I'm anal about using the right terms to describe games and have posted an alternative glossary to the inconsistent sprawl in BGG's database and lexicon that is clear, accurate and simple. I care big time about my reviews, ratings and comments.

Game of Thrones is definitely more streamlined and a lot less random. Starcraft's was halfway between that and Shogun / RoboRally. Very fresh at least, have to worry about sequencing.

2v2 is not bad, best 2v2 conquest game I've played so far. Better than all others where 2v2 is just glorified 1v1. But still waiting for an awesome 2v2 conquest game. I like that one side can club while the other goes for victory or special victory, and also the order-token thing (but you can't place them wherever you want, so not that many options for coordinating).

Our map was sort of linear, with a chain-like formation (I think 6/8 of our planets had only two connections?). That led to a limited amount of places you could place orders. The map isn't always like that -- if it has more connections there'd be more opportunity for places you could place your orders

Played, but in 'good' condition except:

This is the earlier run where the spaceships break off their bases. So several of the spaceships are not attached to their bases. this is how I received the game. now when you request replacements you have to request the bases as well as the ships (I know...because I requested a Orange Arbiter and just received the ship, no base). It has never bothered me to have space ships sitting on the map, but in the interest of full disclosure...

There is also a tear in the rulebook

Will pay shipping to US only.

Played a few times. There are pieces with broken stands - probably around 5 (a couple were that way when I got the game and I didn't ask FFG for replacements. While playing/unpacking game a few more broke). Looks like it would be easy to just super glue them back. Also you usually don't use all your ships when playing so might not even matter that a few are broke.

Shipping to US lower 48 only (shipping free)

If that's said with a sort of despair/resigned voice, probably not the intended audience for an FFG coffin-box game. Excited tone, yes.

eXploit = you harvest ressources with workers
eXpand = use said ressources to buy units, buildings, tech.. Move units to conquer new territories
eXterminate = all units can be involved in combats, and there is lots of them

The only X' missing is the 'eXplore', as the galaxy is fixed and you know what is where at the start of the game. it is random however, so you never play the same system. It can be longer than 4 hours with 6 players, but I have finished games in 3hours with 3 players, and it play really well with 2. It is rather OOP however..

I've played this twice, and the first time was early morning at a convention while we were all learning the game for the first time. (not recommended). It was fun enough - and I love good quality bits - but the size of the box means I will never own it. My wife would KILL me... it's one of the reasons I own lots of small box / card games - my wife endures my habit as long as I keep the games within the designated shelvage area. I could fit four games in the space this one would take up...

Well, you are right, I misspoke. What I thought is that in order to get all those pretty units built, it seems to me you have to play the long elimination game. Otherwise it seems kind of hard to get through all the tech tree level in time.

I need more plays under my belly, but that is how it looked to me.

Not sure what should be so difficult about it. Mechanics-wise, it's an excellent design effort. The combat system manages to make certain units stronger (even much stronger) than others but when it comes to combat the cards and the support rules make it a nail-bitingly tense experience.
Love the game, love it much more with Brood War (usual addendum: best as 2vs2 teamplay).

I found that showing new players FFG's promotional video helps a lot. Of course, general familiarity with Starcraft is also very helpful since you will have a general idea what the units are and which research might be helpful.

I couldn't agree more. I love the game, and the progessive building-up definitely captures the feel of the video game. I really want to play this more, but with the long setup time, and play time, it's very tough for SC:TBG to get any regular play.

Brood Wars really does improve the game, so if anyone hasn't tried it using the expansion, I would at least try it once before writing this game off for good.

Also, FF has been discounting the BW expansion since last fall, since they lost their license to the SC property.

Complete and in excellent condition. Has been played a grand total of once. I really like the game, but it's not getting played (It doesn't help that someone else in my group has a copy that has gotten played multiple times).

INCLUDES

StarCraft: The Board Game - Brood War Expansion - Components are unplayed, and have been placed in the main game's box. I still have the expansion box sitting in storage, if the winner wants it.

FANTASY FLIGHT English Edition. Game is in great condition and includes 5 Plano boxes to hold the bits. Also all the tuckboxes are printed and assembled to hold the cards. Some tap like substance hold many of the player aids together. A excellent copy with all the extras.

SWEETNER:

StarCraft: The Board Game - Brood War Expansion

FANTASY FLIGHT English Edition. Game Box is not included and the contents all fit in the base game box.

I will to CONUS for free and the first $10 dollars elsewhere.

2007 FFG English

Played, but in 'good' condition except:

This is the earlier run where the spaceships break off their bases. So several of the spaceships are not attached to their bases. this is how I received the game. now when you request replacements you have to request the bases as well as the ships (I know...because I requested a Orange Arbiter and just received the ship, no base). It has never bothered me to have space ships sitting on the map, but in the interest of full disclosure...

There is also a tear in the rulebook

Will pay shipping to US only.

Usually, licensed games aren't as good, but this one looks to be an exception.

Awesome.

Sadly, FFG lost the license. So get one now if you ever hope to.

Thanks for the heads up! I can't find it anywhere though (for cheaper than $80).
