I should like this game. The board is crazy, all kinds of cool things can happen, and it has an excellent space theme. And yet, it is still a train game: players pick up goods at stations, travel along "tracks" and deliver goods to destinations that demand the good. The trick to this game is figuring out a trade route that snags you an economic advantage, and I just seem to struggle at that. Plus, much hinges upon the roll of your dice, and I frequently have problems there as well. Still, I like it more than Empire Builder, so I’m willing to be dragged into a game if there isn’t anything else to do.

Like with Outpost, I came to Merchant of Venus really quite recently. And, retroactively, was sad that I'd not experienced it earlier: I could have enjoyed it for that much longer. This is one of my eldest's favourite games. And it's a wonderfully relaxing comfort-game for me, too. I'd be sad to not retain the copy: it's easily in my top-10.

I've been playing MoV for decades. It is a great pick up and deliver game, as the routes must be explored, and the variable demand chits appear differently each game. I prefer this as a 3-player game, but will do 4 on occasion.

Module 1: Transport / Priority: 1 [game end and VPs]

There are 10 cities and 5 different goods (wheat, lumber, livestock, ore and fish) to deliver. In each city there are 4 goods of the same type and the demand for 1 of each of the other goods. So you take one good from one city bring it to another city (with another good) deliver and pick an new and so on. The routes are getting longer because the cities take only one good of each type.

You do have a transporter with 3 points of movement, which is upgradable up to 7 MPs. You can transport 1 good, after an upgrade 2 goods.

The winner is the player who transported the most goods with some VP-bonus for different goods and complete sets, after all players together delivered at least 23 goods.

Sounds easy, but in combination with other modules, you can also transport units, pay instant money for one time faster moves or use your transporter as an explorer as well.

It is a lot of route optimizing here. Look at the board in the beginning, chose your start city well, look when it's the best time to upgrade to faster or "bigger", but depending on the module on priority 2 (income) this may absolutely vary.

Fun Fact: 23 goods to be delivered, to end the game. Where does this come from? No not from calculations, this is just the best number we found from several game tests. It is just a bit more then 20 (half of the available goods), may be that's the clue, but I don't know. It works.

Scorecard for the Week/Month/Year as of 28Mar2015:

9/51/221 plays of 9/27/90 total games, with 1/7/15 expansions employed.
Plays with 9/16/69 distinct opponents.

1/4/15 games acquired (plus 0/1/5 expansions.) - 1849
0/1/4 games sold/traded (plus 0/0/0 expansions.)
1/3/8 games ordered (plus 2/3/3 expansions.) - ロストレガシー 百年戦争と竜の巫女 (Rosutoregashī hyakunensensō to ryū no miko 'Lost Legacy Hundred Years' War and Dragon Princess'), ロストレガシー:貧乏探偵と陰謀の城 (Rosutoregashī binbō tantei to inbō no shiro 'Lost Legacy Castle of Conspiracy and Poor Detective') and ヴィラネックス (Vu~iranekkusu 'Villannex').
Orders for 4 games and 2 expansions still outstanding (though I picked those 3 Japanese things up today! Their accounting comes next week.)

With son #2:
1x _7.7_ Caylus (including The Jeweller) - He began this one quite dubious about its attraction. Yet he likes "building games"; snowballs; things where you build infrastructure so you can build bigger infrastructure. It was plausibly in his wheelhouse. And despite the fact that he grumped his way through the game ("How much longer will this take?") he admitted - after an hour to cool off - that the game was actually quite interesting, and he'd be willing to play again.

With the Wednesday Night guys:
1x _7.3_ Fast Food Franchise - We blasted through a quick game. Tim's Steak 'n Salad expanded across the USA, blowing all competing franchises out of the water. The rest of us were laughably overmatched.
1x _9_ Merchant of Venus - (adding son #1) Having played one of the two (or perhaps three - with Dragonland) quality Roll-and-move games I own, we went on to my favourite of the bunch. Son #1 was lured away from his laptop to join us - and proceeded to out-trade the old folk on his way to an impressive come from nearly-last to victory. I was firmly in last place throughout, so had a lovely spectator seat for the festivities: and, amusingly, managed to enjoy myself despite not being in the running.

With the Monday Lunch gang:
1x _7_ Yavalade New! - Oh, this is weird. It's like Yavalanchor, but for three. Each player only plays their own color. And a player wins if a five-in-a-row appears on the board in their colour plus the colour of their right neighbour. So as soon as the first two-colour five-in-a-row appears on the board, someone has won. We had all sorts of grief figuring out how to think about making that not happen. So while I've marked "one play", we likely had someone win fifteen-to-twenty times (and then rolled back to "what should have been done".)
It was a little depressing to wander into (the moral equivalent of) a fool's mate multiple times in one sitting; but equally quite intriguing. I definitely wasn't thinking about it correctly as we began.
1x _7.3_ Glory to Rome - This is a bit of a contrast with the austere simplicity of the other. But was still quite entertaining. I'm not remotely amongst the Chudyk-fancier subclan, but I still find this good (if chaotic) fun.

With one cool person at BAP:
1x _7.7_ Combat Commander: Europe New! - Richard introduced me to this one. We played the beginning scenario - a minimalist set of rules, desiged to ease the susceptible player (i.e. me) into the system. And I have to admit that I am indeed susceptible: this is a great design.
It's clear; it's got an excellent sense of story and engagement; it's smooth and fairly frictionless in play (even at my beginner level, it feels like one just plays. There's isn't much fumbling for rules, or tables, or charts, or whatever. I suspect some of that reaction is my memory of the wargames of my youth, which were often clunky and awkward. This - and Flying Colors; I had a similar reaction there! - demonstrate that there's been some significant thought in wargame design over the past 40 years.)
Richard was a bit apologetic for the randomness and volatility. Yet, in this context, it didn't seem unreasonable. Our skirmish could have easily gone the other way at several cusps of the flow - and I rather suspect that renders the World That Is far better than many "tighter" systems. So: no complaints on that score from me.
1x _8.5_ Twilight Struggle (59 months dusty) - In actuality, an unfortunate partial play. We didn't check the decks carefully before launching into the game. And, at the end of turn three - when the Europe Scoring card hadn't come up yet - realized something was desperately wrong. Sure enough: it had been misplaced in the Middle War deck. So: about a quarter of a Twilight Struggle, rather than the whole thing. Until we realized the wheels had come off, it was quite lovely, though: wargame or no it's an excellent game.
1x _7.3_ San Juan (36 months dusty) - My first try with the new printing. It's pleasant and friendly. But I still find myself much more compelled (and impressed) by the space-going cousin.

Owned-and-unplayed: 1 (+0/-0).

Outlook for the week: Probably something for lunch tomorrow. Possibly inflicting a few of those ロストレガシー (Rosutoregashī) expansions on my kids. Likely something on Wednesday (I'd love to try 1849, but could live with something less ferocious.)

Taught 2 side by side games of Merchant of Venus. We played on the original version. I had heard a lot about this game, but it was my first time playing it. I enjoyed this more than FireFly, Xia or Eclipse (even though I generally prefer fighting games) which was a big surprise to me. I was going to buy it right afterwards, but my friend Jon beat me to it!

These are 3D printed TeleGate markers I made for MoV. I designed them in 3D Studio Max and had them printed by Shapeways. I made custom stickers for them too.

I wanted something that wouldn't interfere with the ship standees and was easy to see anywhere on the board. They match well with my Culture standees.
