My last game of MoV was pretty close; I triggered the end of the game, but had exactly $2000, and the next player had a little more. (We play with a house rule of even turns.). In retrospect, I should have bartered off a bunch of stuff on my penultimate turn. But I find it difficult to keep up closely enough with how everyone else is doing to know when the game's about to end.

It's even more difficult when playing with the original set (where the deeds are paper) and paper money. The information is public, but continually asking for it is annoying and tedious.

Do you ever have this problem? How do you cope with it?
What games do you play that have an endgame where you'd want to do certain things if you knew the end was going to be triggered?

Hamblen has produced several gems of games. Really enjoy this one. Little downtime, some luck but mainly skill, which is why I lose. Need to learn to make more factories and stations, and not rely on running routes alone. JeroenD has played a lot and killed us. Putted along nicely, and we finished quickly. Need to play this more often.

I managed to make 2013, when I played Merchant of Venus only once, an aberration. I really do enjoy this game, especially when we play to larger amounts. It does not take 50% longer to reach $3000 than it does to reach $2000, and the decisions are more interesting.

Pick up and deliver you say? Why yes, count me in. Merchant of Venus offers a lot more. You can build and equip your ship, explore the galaxy, construct space ports and factories, and even take part in some combat. Yes it's roll and move, but make the right decisions and you'll soon be flying around making some big cash as you go. With plenty of optional rules and variable game length you can have as much fun as you want.

1. Merchant of Venus - This has seen so much play I have replaced the game once. A game I have owned since 1988!

2. Forum Romanum - Basically a multiplayer abstract game. I like the puzzle aspect to this game.

I've seen what was done to the 2012 remake, which though I've not played it has given me a clear preference. Even some of the variants to the original which are similar to the changes in the remake - a couple of which I have tried - significantly impacted my enjoyment of the game.

After a decent first half of 2015 (and a disastrous second half), I'm in for a second try... For me, budget is not the primary driver for this pledge, I just have too many unplayed games - or games that I’ve only played once - to reasonably justify buying more. I had considered limiting purchases to one a month for 2016, or to have played X number of games before buying another game - but I think a blended approach would be best. So here are the rules to limit the purchase of new games:

Reduce the unplayed list.
Currently, my unplayed list is approximately 30 games, after factoring out games up for trade and things set aside for when my son gets a bit older. These games need to be brought to the table to determine if they’re worth keeping around, so I am aiming at playing a minimum of 3 games from the list before buying a new game. My goal is to work through the unplayed list over the course of the year, and start working on the "only-played-once" list.

Monthly limit.
No more than one new game per month. On the off chance that I burn through a bunch of plays/unplayed games at a convention, this monthly limit is in effect to still keep the acquisitions curbed.

And now for the limitations and exceptions.
Special exemption for expansions - expansions will be allowed; my thinking is that by their nature, expansions are a bit different as they get me to replay games already in my collection. However, expansions will be subject to a special limitation insofar as I cannot buy any expansions for games that I haven't played at least 5 time.

Promos are also exempt. I dig them, and I like to support BGG where I can. As such, there won’t be any limitations placed on promos, apart from the fact that I must own the base game already.

Trading is still fair game. Math trades are one of the things I enjoy most about BGG, and I still plan to pursue that interest. This may have the undesired effect of bloating the unplayed list, so the number of games from rule 1 may need to fluctuate.

Absolutely no Kickstarter. This will be difficult considering that the 2nd edition of Nemo’s War is due to launch next year. But there’s already a part of me that feels the shine has worn off of Kickstarter - paying more money than I would at retail for the sake of exclusives, numerous delays, the horrible exchange rate, etc. It will be better for me to avoid the beast entirely. What will end up being my final KS game, Trove, is due to deliver in 2016 and that will be the end.

Preorders will count for the month in which they are purchased, not the month they are delivered.

No contests or Games4GG. (This is kind of an empty pledge, as I’ve managed to win one promo in 6 years from G4GG and the sum total of 0 contests.)

I can receive games as gifts (birthday, etc) and I may participate in BGG Secret Santa if I decide to do it again in 2016.

Mid week gaming was restricted to the inevitable Star Realms, in which I started rather slow and thought I was doomed but I made a bit of a come-back, getting some good hits in but it came to naught when my wife boosted herself up via her trade fleet thenhit me for 30 damage ... a bit more than I had...

(The rematch at the weekend was more lop-sided, my wife getting a run of blob ships right after I picked up a blob base, then used them to clobber me)

We also revisited Parade, it was supposed to be a quick game but we ended up going through the entire deck, with great piles of cards on both sides. The final moves saw me knock down her white majority and as a result I steal the win, 44-55.
The rematch went much much better for her, it was hard to solidify any majorities and I got stuck with some ugly numbers. The game got ended early by her, she was then able to guard against my attack on her blues and get the win. Funnily enough I scored the exact same score (though with a lot fewer cards!).

The weekend gaming was a bit more epic. My wife said she wanted the 'space game' and her vague wave made me think she was pointing at Merchant of Venus which was sitting on the table (borrowed from a friend). She actually meant Race for the Galaxy but she consented to try it again, then proceeded to thrash me, getting some good runs and building a whole slew of factories. I got a bit stuck with a hold of goods after a decent start, then once I got over that, I started to make better progress but it was too little too late.

The post game discussion revolved around the fiddliness of the game (so many little counters) and I suggested that Firefly: The Game was more streamlined (though with the loss of Impossible Furniture and Finest Dust). My wife has some issues with that game but she again agreed to play, I went with the First Time basic scenario. Then she again showed me how it is done. I had a decent amount of money but hadn't managed to get solid with 2 contacts very quickly and my smuggling run ended up needing the explosives I was about to use for another job. And so I raced across the galaxy in desperation while my wife strolled in to see Niska and pay off her loan for the win.

She still has issues, I perhaps should have used a more interesting scenario because the dull play won the day. But the early game seems to be where she is losing interest, that tough road at the beginning - she wants us to have at least some kind of crew plus gear to get started rather than the slog of running from store to store to get those things 'in game'. So another Firefly adventure is on the cards.

Just to complete the science fiction marathon, the game that my wife originally wanted to play is back, Race for the Galaxy with all 3 arc 1 sets. By random draw, we were rebel cantina v rebel freedom fighters (which amused us both) but my wife abandoned her priciples and took the rebel/imperium goal by getting 3 Imperium cards (!) while acquiring prestige. I thought I was going full on military but I drew into a run of production worlds with that goal in play and my tableau filled out pretty fast. However, her high value worlds plus prestige and Imperium Lords gave her the win.

The second game, we decided to go alien v alien - my Damaged Alien Factory against her Alien Research Team. I ended up with a diverse set of production again, culminating in a big score from Galactic Exchange but my wife's set of goals (including both 5 pointers), her good worlds and prestige were just about enough to pip me by a point.

Rounded off the week's play with an attempt to defeat Tsathoggua with our Elder Sign in a solo play (using the app). Michael McGee was a powerhouse but the rest of the group was less effective and after a good start, the elder signs dried up and the Doom and monsters piled up. My desperate bid to reverse this trend ended up with all 4 investigators trapped, but the Doom was about to fall anyway.

Enjoying this game though, it is a very fun play.
