Another favorite. Card driven wargame. I like the challenge of developing a cohesive strategy based on your card hand - which will usually be dashed by your opponent so you need to make mid-year adjustments.

It is a game I really liked, but the amount of effort to get someone to play 1v1 especially a heavy weight, like this, makes the possibility of it hitting the table (for play) almost imaginary. But as long as there is hope...

Before the flood of "me too" CDGs, before the card games that just happen to have boards ... the Giant stood.

The best CDG ever and one of only two that I still play.

After almost twenty years, each session is a joy. Just the right balance of elegance and chrome; history and gaming experience.

If you haven't played this ... you should.

And the crazy thing is that I don't really care for the period or Ancients as a genre laugh

Maybe that's why I cut Hannibal just enough slack to enjoy it as a game, while CDGs set in more modern periods just annoy me. Why can't the French and Russians move at the same time?!

My second best game. I can't believe how good is the game. It has everything -- the elegance of the rules, their simplicity, very cool battle resolution (paired only by the Empires of the Ancient World). It is also well balanced, plays in one seating, and no two games will ever look alike. This game is a good example of how to, using simple measures, design a good game.

I played as Rome.

Hannibal was unlucky and lost 3 units when crossing the Alps. Carthage sent his general from Hispania into southern Italy as well. I sent a general into Hispania, so we were swapping provinces in Italy and Hispania. Carthage converted three Italian provinces, and Rome converted three Hispania provinces.

My generals in Italy have been camping in Rome while all this is going on, but they moved out (on turn four?) to take out Carthage's weak army in southern Italy. Hannibal took the opportunity while Rome was empty to lay siege to it. I moved back to defend it and had a huge twelve turn battle with Hannibal, which I won. All his units were lost and Hannibal was killed. Carthage resigned after that.

I tried something like this a few days ago (not specifically geared toward Hannibal, more to raise support for all the wargames). Can't say I was too successful or even an overly warm response.
Thus, as much as it saddens me to say it, H:RvC is probably as good as out (then again, were it to win it would totally screw up my brackets...)

Great system! Smooth play with many strategic options available to each player. The best card driven game available today.

--Tim von Bismarck (catosulla)

One of the "greatest" wargames/boardgames ever published. The magnificent design of the game captures the essence of this epic conflict. This is the game that I play most
and study most. This is truly "MUST HAVE" "MUST PLAY" material!!!

--les dukakis (Loopy)

One of the best wargames of all time! Card driven mechanics make every turn fascinating and fun, as there is always more to be done than cards to play. Many viable strategies, lots of color and flavor, quick playing time (3-4 hours), and super components add up to a real winner.

Indeed.

OP, don't have the time or don't want to make the time (there's nothing bad about prioritizing other things over games, of course, unless if you are one of the people from my playing group ... Hannibal doesn't take *that* long, although this depends on other hobbies etc.)?

I have it and probably won't play it again.

Something this epic-looking shouldn't play in such a short time.

I've owned this since it was reprinted by Valley Games and never played it. Yes, I know, I should be shot and quartered.

Dan and Andy did play Hannibal. Dan's summary was that he, as the Romans, set off for Spain too early and got trounced. This left him with a CU deficit which caused all sorts of problems.

Probably could cover just about ALL of republican Rome,
but certainly the Second Pubic Punic War. There's
plenty covering this - all that's missing is some good operational
stuff.
