P500'd the reprint (combo'd with this: Commands & Colors: Ancients Expansion Pack #3: The Roman Civil Wars) in February. Is this a preorder? By the time I got into C&C:A, 2&3 were nowhere to be found, but at least I got a copy of the rest of the expansions.

While I love C&CA, I don't like the way they depict the Roman pilum, which is essentially to use it as a 1-die javelin attack. Then you have "Darken the Sky" where all your pilum-armed troops get to fire twice. Gah!

Each Roman soldier had only one pilum. Pila were too heavy to be thrown long distances and were used just prior to close combat to break up an enemy charge or enhance a friendly charge. Surely there's a better way to model this.

My "nit" in C&C:A (which is just about my favorite game, BTW), is the depiction of Elephants.

The fact that they are a complete crap-shoot is not a problem - I imagine this is actually fairly realistic. The real problem is that your opponent will nearly always end up with a banner if you actually try to use them! So we end up trying to hide the elephants away for a last-ditch use.

The other problem is that they end up being most effective against "heavies", contrary to historical accounts which indicate that elephants were hesitant to charge into tightly-massed spears...

For the pilum, just use it when you are being attacked. You obviously can only use it once, you just have to keep track of the units that have thrown theirs. This would cause your opponent some hesitation to attack, if they might suffer injury before they attack.

Pilum : sometimes they carried two (according to some things I read) where one seemed be lighter and "throwier" and other heavy and much shorter ranged.
Elephants probably worked better against heavy troops, as it would be harder to part ranks and get out of the elephants' way. Still, they end up not being used in the historical way, as near as I can tell.

While I'd love the actual expansion (sure, you'll take $20 for it...right?) what we're really looking for is the mounted board, either from this expansion or the 3rd one.

I wanted to get this add-on because I really am interested in the Romans versus the Gauls. My son also likes the era, but mainly because of Asterix and Obelix. These scenarios feel a bit more variable, but sometimes you feel you are buying a lot of repeat wood. Works best if you get a used copy from someone who has already applied the stickers!

The price was somewhat ridiculous, but well worth it.

Base C&C: Ancients clocks in at a would-be #97. What does the 2nd Expansion hold that so boosts the rating? Among other things, an actual mounted map.

But unfortunately, the new edition which bundles expansions 2 and 3 won't.

Since I bought the older edition of the base game but still don't have the expansions, I'm stuck. I should have bought them earlier--but I don't have a lot of opponents for this and so kept holding off.

My thoughts: That's a pretty good deal. Make sure not to be confused by Richard Borg's note at the bottom--this edition does not include a mounted mapboard. This is a fairly recent entry to the reprint list, but with only 21 orders AND the release of CC:Napoleonics, it may be a while before we see this printed. Although, as it's part of a successful series, 500 orders might not be required to make the cut.
