Knowing my daughter(6) would be visiting for easter I hit the local charity stores for the past couple of weeks to grab some games in case of rain.
First up Connect Four (disney princess version) This didn't go down so well and all she wanted to do was play with the princess tokens.
Next was a game of Savannah Café which she enjoyed, especially making the hippo roar and send my lion running back wards.
A kid version of Batikwith fish shaped pieces went down ok but after one or two game she was getting frustrated that she kept losing with what should have been good moves except the pieces bounced slightly.
Battleship was a big surprise I was unsure whether she would manage this since it would be her first introduction to grid references but she had no problems. She really enjoyed playing but the game was a little long and she began to flag towards the end.
I was unsure whether or not to pick up the colourful animal version of Old Maidcalled donkey for 50p but thought what the hey!. This has been the most successful game by far... loads of laughs mainly because mum(me) keeps losing. After 2 games she worked out (all by herself) that if she kept quiet when she got the donkey then people would still take cards from her and maybe she could pass it on. I have never been prouder
All in all I spent about £5 on games and we had an afternoon of fun and my daughter has asked for repeat games of both battleship and donkey(old maid)
EDIT: spelling

5x _4_Battleship
2x .10!Agricola 1x _8_Attika 1x _9_The Manhattan Project
I am sure that Amoeba members will be completely uninterested in this, but I played 5 games of Battleship with my 8 year old boy. We thrifted a used copy in a big church consignment sale because he talked about how much fun he had playing it at camp this summer. So we played it on Friday and Saturday. He loves it! I am happy for him, even though I think the game is rather devoid of any real strategy, other than the metagame for 1) sneaky ship placement based on their revealed search patterns and 2) modifying your search pattern based on their revealed placement tendencies, and 3) ensuring you employ variable, but efficient, search patterns. However, there is still so much randomness inherent in the game that it renders any strategy so subtle as to be nonexistent.
Agricola was our Thursday game night, and the the crowd loved it! Everyone remarked on how much fun this game is and how it really is the pinnacle of good game design. Folks have fun building their farms, even when they lose! I know that would probably irk chally, but it's a valuable feature for making a game fun for the whole family. (And your friends that you typically beat.)
At Tom's monthly game night, we busted out Attika - as a 2p filler! He had not played in a long while, so this was a refresher game for him, and I roundly trounced him. He still had a stack of 6 tiles to draw at the end. This one of my favorite 2p games. It's a fantastic little hand management, territorial tile-laying game with a Hex-like threat of connection. Despite the superficially random surface elements, the better player almost always wins. I was going to recommend this to Cary, but I see that he's already played it ... and trashed it! I found this very surprising, because it seems entirely up his alley, especially considering his liking for Oregon, which is mechanically very similar. In Oregon you get points for efficient placements; in Attika, efficient placements get you resources and free actions.
We ended the night with a 4-player The Manhattan Project that finished with scores of 51-15-14-8. This seems like a huge spread, but this is typical for the game, because passing the player-count-based point threshold ends the game instantly. Had the 8 point player had one extra turn, he would have built and loaded a bomb for 37 more points. The other players were only a turn or two away from passing the 50-point mark as well. In this game, I didn't follow my MBS (Mediocre Building Strategy) and thus I was the target of constant espionage aggression, which forced me to play espionage as often as it was open, and to time my worker retrievals to be sure I didn't leave myself open to my RHO. Everyone enjoyed it quite a bit. Tom is a little uncomfortable with the airstrike element and the potential for targeted attacks, but it did not arise very much in this game. I did one early attack, which forced others to spend some actions to beef up security, giving me freedom to pull ahead.
Almost played PAX, but didn't. I am reading the rules for it now.

We actually have the 1990 version of this game, but I couldn't find it in the list and this is the closest to the cover of our version. We got it for $3 at a flea market, and were thrilled since we'd only seen electronic versions in regular stores.

Found a copy of this complete in local help the homeless store
not a great game but I think the daughter (7) will enjoy
Well I havn't really got this yet. I popped in 2 minutes before closing and spotted this/Yahtzee/Downfall/chess from the 70's and thought what the heck. Left the yahtzee because there were no dice Went to pay and it started hissing it down with rain. The kind gentleman at the till offered to put the games aside until tomorrow/Friday when they are less likely to get soaked. Will go back tomorrow and hope they have more cardboard goodness

You know you can't resist this one!
This game focuses on a small sea zone where a battle is about to be fought! All you have to do is outwit your opponent and set up your forces in your sea zone so they will be hard to hit. Then take aim at your opponents sea zone and blast his navy into smithereens! A unique battle system, based on a 10x10 grid, where you decide the co-ordinates you're going to hit, just like the real navy!
This game comes with an unlimited supply of torpedos and rockets as you draw them on the detailed map of the sea zone you're battling in. If funding goes really well, then we'll be talking about plastic miniatures; submarines, battleships, aircraft carriers, destroyers, you name it!
Let's Kickstart that battleship!

I paid $3 for a copy of the 1967 gay Dad version at “The Rock” charity shop.
In case you haven’t heard the story…
The sweater vest and carefully coiffed hair was an early sign… Dad was a closeted homosexual. When attitudes changed in the 1970s Dad embraced his true identity. He now shares a tastefully decorated waterfront condo in Cocoanut Grove with his longtime companion.
Mom was devastated by the divorce. She channeled her energy into creative endeavors and became a nationally renowned sculptor. Today Mom lives with a handsome tennis instructor who is 15 years younger.
Little Sister hated washing the dishes while the boys played board games. She threw off the oppressive shackles of our patriarchal society and ran away to join a hippie commune in San Francisco. She is now a powerful member of the U.S. Congress.
Junior decided to become a professional wargame designer. He lives under a highway overpass in Brooklyn and gets access to BGG from a computer at the public library.
