A few dusty games made it out this month.

The most dusty was Blokus, last played in January 2009. I'm not the biggest fan of abstracts but I don't turn them down either (my wife likes them a lot - but she's also better at them than me!). We had just finished a game of Ubongo with another couple and we decided to keep with the shape theme. I thought I might find it a little dull, being a game I've had a while and played quite a bit back in the day, but this play at least was great fun, with some big blocks thrown down, some sneaky moves. A full table of 4 (an amount I have played it the least) did help that I think.

Next most dusty was BGG-beloved Puerto Rico, with 17 months of dust upon its box (actually my copy still has the dust as it was somebody's else game we played with). Not because we had the snappy new version, it was just suggested for a game night and we played it like it was 2004 again. It is one of my 10s, the game that brought me to BGG in fact. So I enjoyed myself. We were teaching/re-teaching to 2 at the table which made it run a little long, but it was still a very enjoyable game and I hope the appetite is whetted for some more visits to the island.

Say Anything was next most dusty, just over a year at 14 months. I don't won this and it is usually in the game bag when the folks that do own it come over, so I am surprised it made it longer than a year. It was fun, but I do fear we may have peaked on this game, as one particular game left us in such helpless piles of laughter that it is difficult to re-capture such a moment. Nevertheless, recommended for the creative party gamer!

Another surprise was Small World, which has a year of dust on it. It has been popular with the game group and as a 2 player, so a little surprising we haven't gotten it on the table since last March. Too little time, too many games syndrome, I suppose. I think i even won for once, so that means we won't be playing it again for a while.

That sort of happened to us with PR. It had been neglected for a long time, and we pulled it out to teach it to someone . . . and then it started appearing every game night for a couple months.

Currently it's back in the dust . . .

Blokus as well as Blokus Duo are pretty common finds and great abstract games. If you are only going to play 2 Players then go with Travel Blokus/Blokus Duo instead of the larger Blokus

While the blokus 3d has the problem of the hight rule. This is fairly straight forward. This is a great example of an easy game for them.
Not to many different components,
straight forward rules
and short gameplay

(8 plays in 2005, now 14 plays total) I got bored of this one and gave it away, however Scrabblette is a fan and we've been through Blokus Trigon, Blokus Duo and Blokus 3D (Rumis) as well. Of those, I only still have Rumis. However we have made converts amongst Scrabblette's family.

Picked up Blokus at a ValVil that usually has nothing (the one in Langley, if you're keeping track). Complete, looks never-played, lovely, and $2.99. I've already promised it to the children of some friends of the family.

Last of the Goodwill Outlet duds today. I got excited when I saw the lid to this on the floor. Quickly found the board and bottom and rules, and then the search for the pieces. A complete set has 84 - I could only find 64. Oh well. A man needs spare Blokus parts, right. I'll post on the Parts list.

(Side Note: Also hit Value Village and found a ton of fabric for my wife. She will be happy. )

I've only gone to the GWO a few times, but everytime I do, I see a group of people rush to a cart coming out that is nothing but shoes. They grab as many pairs as shoes as fast as they can (like a contest on who can grab the most shoes and put them into their shopping cart the fastest)

Now I know some shoes (like Air Jordans, etc) can be worth some money but these are probably just your usually thrift store shoes. Can anyone explain or guess what the deal is with shoes? I swear it's like these people have never owned a pair of shoes before

Oh yeah, there were 2 guys that must have been doing this all day because they had 4 shopping carts full of shoes against a wall..1 guy would watch over the carts and the other would bum rush the new bins..

seems. so. wrong

If they wheeled out bins full of board games, don't tell me there wouldn't be a crowd of thrifters doing the same thing!

Yeah, most of those folks will toss aside games without a second thought which might seem liks a good thing for us, but generally there's no tape or rubberband on them, so pieces end up scattered everywhere. I once saw a Mystery Mansion (1984) that was all loose in a bin but I just didn't both to attempt to find all the pieces

Another one of these. There was an awful lot of rattling in the box, so I'm not very hopeful it is complete. However, I only need one piece to complete last week's find and then I can farm out these parts to other Geeks.

A nice copy of Blokus with all the pieces in individual zippy bags. Destined for my wife who is a teacher for her classroom. (She's got a good eight or so copies now).

Games we played

Blokus
x3
Last Will x1
Scrabble x1

We have been enjoying playing Blokus, but I will have to give it back to my the school age programme I am leaving now. I asked my supervisor to buy it for the kids. I am glad they will be able to enjoy it after I leave them - kind of legacy I leave for them.

Last Will: I plan to play it a few more times this week, and see how I will feel about the cards and the things you can do in the game.

Thanks, Michael. I also hope my feelings will change. I have not bought a game in a good while I do not like, and the theme is fun, the artwork is adorable, but, but.... something has not clicked that should. And you know it all, my preference level about games is much higher than most of yours in the GCL. I will keep you posted.

It caused a fight between me and my partner. The game can be nasty! I thought it was going to be a fun game about laying "pretty pieces" down, and she played like a barracuda, which I didn't even realize was an option. We both thought the other person was ruining the game. It was bad... soblue

It's kind of funny, because we play highly competitive games all the time (wargames, included), and yet, this pretty game was the one to cause bad feelings.
