Weekly Plays:

Brass - 4 (all online)
Othello - 1

I'm all over the place in my Brass games lately... winning two comfortably with traditional mill strategies, but I'm playing ports in two others, and then the scum and GCL games are just... bizarre. Lack of port connections seems to be the defining factor in both.

Had a fun game of Othello with Liz Thursday evening. I controlled the sides most of the game, but was never quite able to force a completely dominant position, so she was able to grab a corner and keep things close. I am looking forward to teaching her Coerceo (not such an experience gap for her to overcome).

I've been considering painting the miniatures in the copy of BattleLore I picked up (though I intend to try the game out a couple times, make sure it's something I will be interested in). Any advice?

Way back in the day, I was into Blood Bowl and Warhammer. I decided to paint one of my Blood Bowl teams. I painted exactly 1.5 guys. Just make sure you really want to do it before you start!

Don't use crayon

What are your thoughts on BattleLore vs. Memoir '44?

I like BattleLore far more... a few reasons:

1 - different abilities/makeup based on races
2 - the theme is more appealing
3 - I really feel like a lot of the cards in M44 are overpowered. I've played, maybe, 7-10 games of M44 ... I still don't know how we're not all speaking German today. I can't find a way for the Allies to win.... lol....

I actually thought BattleLore seemed appealing for reasons 1 and 2. If reason 3 is true, that's even more appealing.

I ditched my copy of Memoir '44 long ago (mostly due to it not getting played rather than because of any dislike). Maybe I'll get a chance to play BattleLore one day.

I'll just pop in real quick:

While I haven't played with any of the Battlelore expansions, the base game scenarios were very reliant in similarly composed forces beating the crap out of each other. Memoir also features several special units (though those might be limited in the base game). Memoir's reliance on terrain was its greatest differentiator I felt. Battlelore felt like it took the more varied units and makeups of C&C:A with the simplicity of Memoir and ended up with neither's benefits. It's a far clunkier system than its predecessors but features boring scenario design.

As for its theme, I can see how Battlelore would have its adherents. I vastly prefer C&C:A to either Memoir or Battlelore though.

Looking through only my plays, I see a slight leaning towards the Allies in the base game scenarios. This seems to be balanced somewhat with the Air Pack versions, but the Allies stand a fair shot at victory. There are certainly scenarios that are out of balance and if you only ended up playing those, that would definitely be the case.

Have you played C&C:A or C&C:N at all? They have much greater levels of differentiation among armies than the other systems, but are probably further out of balance due to the fairly historical setups involved.

I actually own most of the C&C games, and have never played them (nor even broken the shrink - I know ... hard to believe).

Now, I'm pretty convinced I won't play them. Again - I'm more a fan of the theme of BL than C&C; and the play is mostly similar. But, I can't imagine stickering all those stupid blocks

As I get older, I need to start being more discerning in where I spend my time -- BL scratches that itch; so I'm content to stick with it (of course ... if someone wanted to come and sticker all my blocks FOR me, I'd be happy to give C&C a chance)!

I just finished stickering Expansion 4 this weekend (and putting all of my stuff into a beautiful Plano container). Stickering is definitely not the most engaging activity.

As BL scratches the itch, I cannot really argue for the other systems.

If you get a chance to play a C&C game, I recommend trying it out. They feel surprisingly different from Memoir or Battlelore. Ancients in particular is very focused on proper maneuvering of units to achieve your goals. Combat is a lot more dangerous with units being able to battle back all of the time.

One of my most played games. Even though I think Battle of Westeros made some rule improvements, this is the Borg game that hits the table the most still.

This kind of hits the sweet spot for me too.

Just enough depth and variety to be interesting.

Just enough luck to not be too much of a brain-burner.

Just short enough (about 3 hours for full Epic) to be played in an evening.

The only bummer is the setup and teardown time. I've taking to picking out units before games, and resorting them the day after the game.

Is it a wargame? Well there are two parties at each side of the board, willing to fight it out. It is not exactly your regular artists- of the-renaissance- competing-for-favour-of-the-Sun-King-bidding-workers placement-area-majority-game.

With that out of the way, I could say that the design of the minatures look kind of uninspired. The tactic of building groups of four, giving each others a bold morale status is the only tactic I could see and that was no use when a new player shatterd all my units with a couple of stupid moves and some lucky dice rolls.

I mainly fell for the hype on BGG, which brought up the game Rank 8 or something and made me believe that this was a really solid game with cool theme and components. Luckily I sold this game for more than I'd paid for (with the bonus craetures).

Okay I could not hate this game (or any game), but I was quite dissapointed.

I'm a fan of this game, and it's not a deep wargame by any means.

BUT it is quite a bit deeper than meets the eye after the first play or two.

At first you think it's all about rolling hits. But later you see that keeping a solid support line, not overreaching when winning on one part of the board, and developing rear units (bringing them forward) are all important.

I suggest NOT playing with Battle Savvy rules (formation's more important without them; the game's thus more strategic).

My copy was only $65 on the geek just a few months ago. That's a lot I know but I will keep it and play it so it's worth it.

I guess we have different guages of what "a lot" is. This seems really cheap in today's game market. Most games that are new on the market with any level of components costs $65.00 off the shelf. Given the components and the scarcity, this game is worth far more.

Yes, I mean "a lot" in general, not a lot compared to other copies of the same game. I think anything above the $30 or so range is too much for a board game, and very rarely buy anything above that.

These items are all out of print! The base game itself is highly sought after. The hill giant promo is even more sought after!

I could really not get my wife to play Memoir 44. However, she does like the fantasy theme. Now we play Battlelore, and I have to say that I like it a lot. The "Lore" part really feels fun, and adds a neat interaction element she likes. Sometimes theme is everything!

What we like about it: Fantasy themed, pretty pieces. Tactical and with enough luck to make it harder for a good player to dominate 100%.

So is this one similar to Memoir '44 in game play? I didn't know that. I think I assumed it was more of a Risk type of game.

EDIT: I should clarify that I've never played it, only see it on the shelf at my FLGS.

These and others (see Commands and Colors) have similar mechanics. The slight differences in Battlelore were significant enough to sway my wife to play. I like both games on their own, but most people will find out that playing only one of them is enough. I actually might end up getting others in the series

"Too random" she says. She can handle random cards or random dice rolls but both together is too random.
Plus she feels she has a disadvantage when playing me at tactical games because her "brain just doesn't work like that and yours does".

My friend and I got so into setting up a new scenario from the online site, making sure the flags were placed in the correct four soldier groups, finding the proper hexes flipped to there proper sides. Hour and a half later we decided we did not even have enough time to play anymore...

Yeah, and then the gameplay itself is only 30 minutes or so. More set up time than play time.

Definitely my poster-child for setup killing gameplay. I love this game, but hardly ever get it to the table because it takes so long to get the troops onto the map. If you really want to punish yourself, add the Call to Arms expansion!

Viking Lords. I've played most of the scenarios and enjoyed them. I'm especially glad to have bought it since it's no longer being distributed. It's a good Commands & Colors engine. It seems like FFG and Puffin Software could work together on producing a licensed BattleLore game.

My FLGS (LFGS?) had a market day today where people can bring games and sell them and receive store credit. Most of the stuff was Warhammer, pnp rpgs and minis, but there were a few board games and this was one of them. I snagged it for $25, no tax.

The box has been opened but everything is still sealed and there are english rules. The sellers said the hill giant is in there, so I'll have to verify in a bit. Not super cheap thrift, but it seemed like a pretty good deal to me!
