#5

This game is up there on the list of games I never would have thought twice about under most circumstances. I'm not even sure how I found out about it, nobody in my group knew, but somehow I ended up with it. It got a lot of plays when I first got it, and it still comes out fairly often. Such a super design, though the color scheme is unfortunate. I just love those moments when someone is agonizing over a decision, and every play has several of these.

A spatially-oriented "bidding" game. Despite the garish color-scheme, I think it still looks beautiful by the end of the game. Secret objectives add a nice little twist. I also have the expansion cards.

The week before last:
__8__  Metropolys (new!)
__7__  Roll for the Galaxy
____  One Deck Dungeon x2

Last week, while away with family:
__8__  Race for the Galaxy x2
__8__  Dixit Odyssey
__7__  Castles of Mad King Ludwig
__7__  Forbidden Desert x2

Context / Outside of gaming: I spent the last week in upstate NY with my wife + kids, parents, and sister + brother-in-law. If it had just been the four of us, it wouldn't have been a vacation, but my parents spent a huge amount of time playing with the kids so we were able to get in a fair bit of R&R, reading, archery, and the occasional board game. The packing / trip to + from was pretty tiring, though. It was winterpup's first long trip ("4.5 hours" => 6-7 hours with stops for rest / diaper changes / so the kids didn't explode); he handled it reasonably well, but he's still 6 months old and spent portions of it rather upset that he had to stay in his carseat.

~ ~ ~

Gaming, in bulletpoints:
* Nearly all of this past week's games were with my sister and/or brother-in-law; I got my dad (and, briefly, wife) to join in on Dixit.
* Finally got to play Metropolys. Loved the spatial auctions and the changing labyrinth of the board. Two of us blew our high numbers too early to lock in points, whereupon we got trounced by the third player who used his advantage to set up multi-turn plays.
* Both plays of Race were with the base-set only - it was still lots of fun to revisit. I may well pick up the upcoming expansion and start Race-ing more often again.
* The play of Castles was excellent. 3p, vs. my sister and brother-in-law. We were all on roughly the same page re: how much time to think about setting prices - paying attention to what other people might want and how much money they have, but not calculating out exactly how much each room is worth to each player. It helped that we were on a small enough table to be able to see each others' castles pretty easily.

Reason for Buying: My Dad was addicted to Settlers of Catan. I desperately bought this for full price based only on the blurb on the back hoping we could play something besides Settlers.

Comments: Dad took one look at the gameboard (reputed to be the world's ugliest board) and whined "Can't we play Settlers?" Later I played with my sisters and niece. It's a nice light game.

Did I win the FLGS Game: Moral Victory! Your daughters and granddaughter liked it, Dad. So it's just your bad taste in games! So there!

Don't fall in love with me yet, we only recently met
mbmbmbmbmb
Tuesday games night was down to only three. We chose a game each, and we won a game each (not the same ones).

Metropolys
The others hadn't played before and I adopted my usual tactic of hanging back until they'd spent their high tiles and then pouncing once the lay of the land was clearer. It ended 40-something, 30-something, 20-something and I even managed to complete two 'lamp-post' objectives.

Impulse
The game turned on two battles at the sector core, both of which I lost to Andy on 'defender wins ties'. He was on 17VP and I was reduced to a single transport, but I managed to use it to build a cruiser, take one of Andy's out in battle, sabotage two more and end my turn with 4 ships. Andrew couldn't finish the job of wiping him off the map though, and he was able to scrape over the line next turn.

Istanbul
Immediately following the wild swings of Impulse, this felt like a very tightly-constrained efficiency race. Andrew pipped us to the post, but both Andy and I would have got our fifth crystal on the next turn.

Played at all player counts. The only thing that changes is the amount of the board that is used. otherwise, game play is the same, including the excitement of outbidding your opponent(s).

more supervised Bridge play. i'm learning to overcome transportation problems. just when i think i understand it, transportation becomes more difficult!!

Sean and I played What’s My Word mid-week and i actually beat him! he is sooooo good at word games that i never thought i’d beat him at one. i chose my 2 guess words carefully: FRECKLE really stumped him!!

Neos is harmless enough. it is a simple little multiplayer solitaire. i didn’t love it, but didn’t hate it either. speaking of MPS, also played Rolling Japan - this one i like!!

we gumshoed our way around London solving the case of the Mystified Murderess. yikes! this case was a little nutty. i read after the fact that this is one of the weakest cases of the set. i still enjoyed myself thoroughly - it’s fun! - but i was disappointed when i read how Holmes solved it. cheater.

i lost to Sean in Haru Ichiban which seems totally unfair considering it was his first game and i’ve played half a dozen times. still enjoying this lovely little thing.

a first play of Metropolys. i loved it. to connect to the topic for this week’s list - this is exactly the kind of game that i love: simple rules, interactive, spatial. i enjoyed the interesting twist on the auction mechanic. i completely blew it and got smushed in scoring….

…. but got revenge in The Castle!! bwah ha ha! i love this game!

mb mbyour weekly moment of Elephant:mb mb
elephants are very long-lived. Asian elephants can live into their 70s and African elephants into their 50s. what is the cause of most elephant deaths? predators? heart disease? stroke? cancer? none of those! it is because of lack of elephant dentists! the diet of elephants abuses their teeth. after decades of wearing them down eating wood and rough vegetation they lose their teeth. they starve soon after their last set is shed.

Good week!

My wife was out of town so I spent a lot of time in my "game cave" looking at games and digging out old things.

I planned a game night with my a couple of friends looking over each other's game lists trying to decide what we wanted to play with no real decisions. I had requested Beyond Baker Street because we had played Hanabi before, they wanted to try Coconuts and Rolling Japan.

Since we had Beyond Baker Street planned so I did a play test of that to make sure I knew how it worked. It was the first game of our game night. It worked well and we barely won which makes it exciting.

We switched to Coconuts(requested - probably because he has kids) but it was just us adults), I was glad to win because I rarely beat him

We then switched to Meropolys. This had been recommended on a different podcast as a must play. After we set it up and started I realized I must have played this years ago because it felt familiar, I just have not been logging that long so I couldn't be certain. I enjoyed the game - very interesting mechanisms and city building feel.

We switched to a light option. Rolling Japan. Since they had requested it - turns out I forgot it at work - so before our game night I had found a copy of the map on line and the required dice at home to get a play in. I do not recommend making your own copy w/o owning one first.

We ended the night with Roll for the Galaxy. A game we all were familiar with and enjoyed.

With my wife out of town I pulled out games I wanted to figure out and played them solo.

Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective - this is the 1983 brown binder version that I've not played since about then. It still has my case notebook in it. Having been about 30 years I was certain I'd forgotten the cases and just started over with case one. I worked thru case one - and took the quiz. I had figured out 5/6 of the quiz answers and not even encountered one of the quiz questions within my investigations.

Alchemists- I played a full two player game - just playing each player. Hard to keep things secret in my mind between the two players, but it was the only way in my mind to work thru the rules and understand the consequences of publishing, last round, end game scoring. I still struggle to figure out the logic and particularly how I'm going to teach it to others.

Mage Knight Board Game - I've had this for years sitting on my shelf per my son's request. I opened it up and realized it was still in shrink and never been played. I knew it had solo options so I set it all up and worked thru the rule book. I did not actually complete a solo game yet.
