You're steering a river boat along the Mississippi. Because the river changes its course, it's not known exactly what the best route will be and you have to pick up two passengers from various semi-random points along the river before getting to the end.

As with many other race games, you can change speed and direction a small for free, but doing more costs something - in this case, coal - you have a very limited amount of. We had the Black Rose expansion, with its coaling stop, but that came up very early, and someone ran out mid-course.

Good game, and very thematic. The way the river course is determined also acts as a brake to the person in the lead - they may find themselves on the wrong side of the river, but everyone else will be able to see the best course.

With Tables One and Two ready to reconfig, and Tables Three and Four hours and days and centuries away, we decided we needed a six player game, because there were six of us: Tim, Elden, Eric Five, Jerry, Shawn, and Tom. After some sturm und drang, it was decided, undemocratically, that we should play Mississippi Queen.

We played with an unofficial variant, mostly because Tim got confused between Mississippi Queen and Powerboats, that allowed you to drop to zero speed and still pick up a Lady. Thus, you could steam into the dock space at speed, burn enough coal to drop to zero, and still get a Lady, rather than having to jockey your way around so that you are one space away by the time it is your turn to act. I have decided, imperiously, that I do not like playing this way, as the jockeying (and/or choosing not to jockey) is a key part of the strategery of Mississippi Queen. Still, it only happened a couple times, so it probably wasn't that big a deal.

Jerry got out to an early lead by ignoring the early Ladies - this can be a good strategy, as you will have less competition for mid-game Ladies, and slowing down midgame can put you in the desirable second place position going into the end game. And, in fact, he was able to pick up two Ladies in quick succession, while Tim got his second at the same place Jerry got his.

From that point on it was a two person race - Eric Five was close, but he still had a Lady to find, while Tim and Jerry traded first place, trying to build up enough of a lead on the others while still keeping a sane pace through the unknown river. Fortunately, most of the midgame tiles did not have a lot of big, high-speed runs, so the back markers were finding it difficult to use the advantage of river knowledge to make up ground.

The key move came with three tiles to go - Jerry moved in front of Tim to block off one route, so Tim increased his speed and pushed Jerry out of the way. But he made sure to keep Jerry on the same tile, rather than pushing him onto the next one, which would have triggered another tile draw. Because Jerry was in front, that meant he had to move onto the next tile without knowing which way the river was going to move on his turn - but Tim would know on his turn. Jerry had to burn a couple coal manuevering as a result, while Tim was able to keep his coal stores intact while simultaneously increasing his speed and pushing into the lead.

The final tile and dock placement presented no challenge, and Tim was able to sail easily into the dock for the victory. Jerry was a turn behind, lacking the coal for a desperate high speed push fest. Tom had caught up to Eric 5 as they raced for third place, but Tom did not think that you had to finish at speed one, and crashed into the dock. He claims he had enough coal to actually drop to speed one on his next turn, although there is some dispute about that. Therefore, we will award Eric 5 third place and Tom * place, where * is either 2.5 or 3.5 or possibly 6, depending upon the actual state of his boat in the final turn. Elden and Shawn brought up the rear in fourth and fifth place, respectively.

1 new game for me in June

New Game of the Month - Mississippi Queen

Intro
It must be interesting to see 1997 Spiel des Jahres winner as New Game of the Month. I got it in a great package for German eBay. Won the bidding for El Grande, but many other games were included, so was Mississippi Queen. Midsummer holiday seemed like best time to try this racing game with passenger ships.
Games played
1 three player game
Components
Great component quality for older game. Can't even compare it to pale and boring El Grande components. Ships are cool, box insert - awesome, and passenger minis - the best. My girlfriend just adored them. River tiles are thick, functional, and good looking as well.
Theme
In Mississippi Queen players are captains of passenger ships - racing in the great river Missisippi. Each ship has equal supply of coal, and needs to pick up and deliver 2 passengers to a final port. First captain to do it wins the game. I think the theme goes hand in hand with gameplay. To pick up a passenger ship needs to slow down (like get tied up to docks), increasing speed quickly burns coal and so on.
Gameplay
In its heart Missisippi Queen is very simple racing game with reasonable amount of luck. River tiles each time come out in different order, and river goes in different directions. So each play will be disparate, and as you know, replayability is the thing I value high in games. However - is the game replayable enough? Well, maybe not for me or my gaming group. Mississippi Queen just seemed too light. Only decisions are turning the ship, manipulating speed, and picking couple of passengers on a way. Still the game can be quite mean. Not so much as Survive: Escape from Atlantis!, but with many possibilities to block opponent ships. And remember - if ship runs out of coal, captain is out of the game for good. I miss those games with player elimination; there should be more of them. It makes you play smarter.
Opinion
If you are looking for a good looking family game, Mississippi Queen is your choice. Rules are easy, it plays quick, and all types of gamers will have fun. Game is completely language independent (except rules, of course), so you can easily get one of the cheap copies from German eBay (sometimes the game goes for less than 5 EUR). It will definitely stay in my collection, and I hope to get it on table time after time. Most likely with non-boardgamer friends.

This is the Goldsieber German language edition. The components are language independent and there is a copy of the English rules in the box. The box has a little shelf wear and the box bottom has some slight dishing on one corner. The red boat has one broken smoke stack, as does the white boat. But the white stack is present and can be glued back on. All other stacks are in tact. FYI, the broken smoke stacks was a common problem with this game.

Black Rose is the RGG English language version. It is new in the shrink.

Will only ship to the US(48), but shipping is free.

July 16, 2011

The recent announcement of the Spiel des Jahres winner, Qwirkle, gave me the good idea to play that game again...as well as the excuse to talk about a handful of other SdJ winners I've played "recently." Ok, not really that recent, but there was a game party last year when I specifically wanted to concentrate on games from 1999 or earlier. Quite by accident, I found myself concentrating on some SdJ winners from that earlier decade. It shouldn't have been a surprise, I suppose--the Spiel des Jahres jury is very deliberate in its selection of games it thinks will be modern classics, good for pleasant experiences around a game table for family & friends. That focus runs counter to what some gamers want in a deeper, strategic challenge, but it happens to line up nicely with what I like in a game. For me, I've got enough mental challenge in my day job. I don't need my fun & relaxation to be brainless, just a little less taxing than my workweek. The SdJ winners do that for me.

Games like Settlers of Catan, Mississippi Queen, and Drunter & Druber (Wacky Wacky West) were like revisiting favorite books or familiar movies, while Cafe International was an old classic I no longer care for. Torres is a more complex SdJ winner than others liked more than me, but I still enjoy playing it once in a great while. I cheat a little and consider Bohnanza an honorary SdJ game, since it was an unusual card game that made the nomination list.

Even now, the SdJ jury is making selections that rub some gamers the wrong way, but I think time will show the value of their choices. Qwirkle is light & pleasant--a common reaction is surprise that no one thought of it before! But it took Susan McKinley Ross to do that, and now we've got a game I could see playing in 20 years, unlike many others on my shelf. Time may pass those titles by. For the brand, new Kennerspiel, I agree that 7 Wonders is lighter than expected for new prize, but I also agree that it's a landmark game. We felt that way when Carcassonne, Ticket to Ride, and Dominion appeared on the scene. They were so good, they just had to be picked to win an award.

-Mark
