#10 - Power Grid

Something about this game just clicks for me. Economic games aren't necessarily a genre in which I enjoy, but Power Grid just works. The auctions can get intense when everyone is trying to purchase the same plant. I've never played a game before this where it may not be beneficial to be in the lead throughout the game since it hurts your buying power. This keeps games close in my opinion and prevents a runaway leader, which isn't the most fun (unless you're the one in the lead I suppose). Power grid isn't the easiest game to get to the table in my group but when it does, it's always a good time.

#6

Weirdly enough, the purported heaviest game that I own is the one whose rules I found the easiest to grasp, and that has been most successful with all my non-gaming friends. I do not play it very often, as it does not make a good 2-player game (mainly because auctions would not work), but I love the changing order, the fact that it might pay off to be the last for the most part of the game and the fact that every game will be different.

I first met James in 2005. He had placed an ad here on BGG about a group he was forming. On October 16th of that year I joined them. On that day we played Power Grid; it may have been the first game I played with him.

From that day on, the Sunday group has been a regular fixture of my life. Participants have come and gone, but "Are you going to James' on Sunday?" has been a regular question. Through this game day I met tons of other great people who have become regulars there.

I also met James himself. He loved confrontation and chaos. If a game featured attacking, someone was going to get attacked. He enjoyed negotiation and bluffing. But he was also one of the kindest, most generous people I ever met. He cared deeply for the community and people around him.

The loss of James is a devastating shock to everyone who knew him. None of us who gamed with him have processed it completely yet. He will be deeply missed, but I'm thankful to have known him for as long as I did.

Power Grid seems to have been chosen for its aesthetic. It is a bit funny that it shows up on this list because it was fairly unanimous in my board game group that we hate the box art for this game.

Power Grid: Québec/Baden-Württemberg (1 play on 2012-10-10)
Power Grid: France/Italy (1 play on 2008-03-26)

Hah. This is almost as stupid as Age of Steam. (But not quite, I guess. I have played a couple of these.) Any of these are plausible: the only difficulty for Power Grid is that we're all pretty sure Tim will win. So we'd only pull it out if he hadn't won anything recently. Which is, frankly, completely unlikely.

Still number 1. Nothing has changed that would displace this. I've mentioned auctions and pacing as elements that interest me. Power Grid is basically THE auction game where you have to time your charge to the finish better than your opponents.

#15

I remember some time back in the early 00s, I played a game called Funkenshlag. In it, you bid on power plants, connected your cities to your grid by connecting dots with crayon, very similarly to drawing track in Empire Builder, and buy fuel for these plants on a fluctuating commodity market. Sound familiar? Funkenshlag was the precursor to the modern Power Grid. I really liked Funkenshlag, as I have a thing for economic games. So when I heard they were reimagining this game, I had to have it.

Power Grid ditches the connect the dots crayon bit, in favor of the more streamlined (there’s that word again!) single-link connection method we see today. But I actually don’t mind this change. Connecting the dots and counting out the costs for each took a lot of time, and didn’t really add much to the game. The game was also made faster in terms of rounds and number of cities, and that I didn’t like too much. The midgame pretty much disappeared. Players would just skip midsize plants and go for an endgame plant with their fourth purchase.

Fortunately, the alternate power plan deck fixed all of these problems, and now I insist on using it every game. It includes several very large plants, which allow you to play to 20 cities, and also rebalances the rest of the deck especially the starter plants. Every plant in the initial offer is viable now, I feel, and it’s nice to have a nuclear plant in the initial offering as well. No more will that useless #6 garbage plant just sit there gumming up the works; it powers two cities in the new deck rather than one, so an early garbage strategy can actually work. You also don’t have lower numbered plants that have hugely higher capacity than other plants around it, giving whoever buys it a huge advantage. (A sub-30 plant should never be an endgame plant) Green plants and efficient fossil plants are m ore attractive as well, since you don’t have a huge capacity shortfall when you buy one. Getting a four city plant just isn’t smart when there’s six city plants available, no matter the difference in efficiency.

Power Grid played with the “green” deck and to 20 cities (somewhat less with six players) is the definitive Power Grid experience, and it’s loads of fun for players of all levels. Just, please, for the love of God, throw away the default grey deck straight away. Like that awful #6 plant, the deck is garbage.
