Comment: Kingsburg more than doubled the votes of competition in Pre-Rd1. Can the dice defeat the cards now?

Can't forget this one. It's the game that started the "Using Dice as Workers" craze that Alien Fronties, Troyes and Castles of Burgandy followed.

Another hit in our collection, and her making. This one was part of that big lot where we ordered "El Grande", and the actual start of our realization we were in for the long run and a long collection. We play this two players in a very relaxed manner. We never play without the expansion.
What we like about it: Dice rolling with meaningful decisions. Making the most out of your luck feels pretty neat. Also, because there is a good measure of luck involved, it can go either way despite the player effort, making the game non-deterministic (we heavily favor games where anyone can go with the win).

Surprised this is not on the list already, its got a look and style that will appeal, its very easy to learn and play, its got dice being used a bit more interestingly than yahtzee
Not really for me these days, but we loved it when we first started discovering games that weren't Monopoly

Anna requested Kingsburg, and we played with all the expansions except the special events. We got those cards out, but no one remembered to use them. Oops...
Todd 54 Ross 45 Anna 39 Phil 36
The monsters were pretty tough this game, all at the top of the strength spectrum. Anna lost most of the battles, but had built a building that prevented losing points when losing a battle, which negated two of those losses. Her and Phil each lost a building, which always hurts. I wasted my 3 chip on the first battle, which I still lost, and that really hurt me later. I was unable to build a farm because I couldn't take the military hit, and I had to spend a bunch of resources on soldiers in rounds 4 and 5. I think Todd, Anna and I were all pretty close before the final round, but while we struggled with the monster Todd managed to build to the end of the second row, and just leaped ahead.

I suspect this is because people rated it before the expansion came out, which made the game much, much better. But even without the expansion this is a fine family game/gateway game for worker placement. Nice artwork, intuitive, not really a lot of AP potential, and quite a few valid strategies.
With the expansion this is easily top 100 material. Maybe I could see it being low 100s without, but 161st, really?

A game that we might be a bit burnt out on now, but man have we played this game. Still one of the best uses of dice in a euro.

Now Gameslore have this back in stock I am planning to buy it to play over Easter with the family. I'll get the expansion as well as I consider it makes the game “whole” in the same way as the Pillars of the Earth and Cuba expansions complete their base games.

I've played the computer version of this one quite a bit, and I was interested in seeing how my favorit strategy would work against human opponents. We had 5 players. I usually play the computer AI with a 3-player game. Competition for spots is definitely keen with 5. My usuall strategy is to go for buildings that give battle points first and then I complete the bottom line of building. I had the Embassy by the middle of year 3, which gives a VP every turn, and as I built up the +2 counters, I'd burn one of those with the Town Hall. I then proceed to the middle line. I finished that by the end, getting that all important +2 battle points and the ability to hire troops for 1 resource. Good thing as the demon came up at the end and I squeeked out a draw to preserve the win.
It was a fairly friendly game, as no 1's and I think only one 2 was rolled for the king's roll prior to the battle, so I think there were only a couple of losses.
Thus ended the Friday gaming at around 2:00AM.
