Such an old game - but still great. Loved it as a kid - everyone playing with me (parents, grandparents, friends) hated it (or me at some point

As usual for this time of the year, I have watched a fair amount of basketball over the past few weeks. We are now down to the final four. First games are March 30, so get your answers in before then.

The students occasionally play this abstract strategy game but it isn't a favourite. (Overexposure in earlier grades perhaps?)

Due to a fortuitous tie-break I was able to win the first 4 of a 5 game session.
Base game with Prosperity, we always use Colony and Platinum
All played with the same set-up, my wife likes to fully explore a set...at least until she wins
(2)Chapel (3)Woodcutter-Watchtower-Woodcutter-Village (4)Thief-Remodel (5)Vault-Library (6)Adventurer (7)Bank
Game 1 (40-40 Tiebreak to GVH) My wife jumped to an early lead by using Vault and Bank to get Gold and Platinum early, while I was muddling around, paring my deck down with Chapel, when I realized she was going to get too much money for me to compete I bought a thief, and due to my thin deck, was able to use it often and stole some Platinum and Gold, she reacted and bought her own thief, but due to her fat deck only used it once or twice and I lucked out on the results. She bought Colonies first, but I was able to grab the last one and forced a tie and due to start position I was declared victor
Game 2 (70-37 GVH) I focused on Chapel again to aggressively thin deck, used gold/bank to pick up some platinum pretty early, my wife was all over the place with her purchases, got a thief but it never really panned out. I was able to buy a Colony on 4 consecutive turns, before the Colonies in hand stalled me out a bit, she started buying whatever VP's she could near the end in a vain push to not get shut out.
Game 3 (66-49 GVH) I stuck with my Chapel thin deck strategy, while the wife for some reason bought a bunch of Woodcutter early. I focused solely on parlaying my thin deck into platinum, discarding all silver and gold along the way, did buy an Adventurer to help the deck cycle even faster.
Game 4 (46-43 GVH) I went even more aggressive with my thin deck strategy only having 4 platinum, 1 village and a chapel before I started buying Colonies, and a Province which proved to be the decider) My wife went full out big money and almost pulled it off.
Game 5 (67-20 WofGVH) I stuck with my same strategy, but wasn't able to thin as quickly due to card distribution early, ended up buying a thief late trying to slow her big money train down, but didn't really work. She parlayed vault and banks into platinum then started buying colonies before I was able to get my deck to where I wanted it and by the time I was ready she had a clear advantage.

$1 St. Vincent DePaul. "Admiral's Daughter" from the Great American Trading Company. Doesn't seem to appear on the Geek as an alternate name. Should I add it? Wooden box with hinges on one side similar to one in picture. Removable wooden piece secures marbles during play.
Hit five stores including two garage sale/flea market places and found one Snap Circuits set and these two games.

I found an old version of this at GWO for 79 cents per pound. I really wanted to keep the box, but it had a missing section and mildew issues, so I just added the game to my Lego Creator box. I also learned that this game is played with checkers... I had no idea! It was missing a couple of checkers, but I have plenty of spares from the last chinese checkers/checkers combo game that I thrifted. I bought this for my daughter who hopes to begin her teaching career next year.

This was $2 at VV. I like having travel versions of games as it makes going to visit the girlfriend's family more fun. I'll try to wean them into things like Carcassonne and Settlers later this year.

Yesterday's lunchtime find. This was my favorite classroom game in grade school, but we never had it at home. I'll enjoy playing this with the kids.

The representative image for the game wasn't as goofy as the others on the list, but the one above is a little closer to the spirit of the others. Kid isn't slouching too bad, but Dad has to be. Wearing a collared shirt and sweater also appears to be the standard uniform for the relaxing hobby of playing board games.

I belong to a medieval/renn gaming group and i was just doing research on this game yesterday (ok, second round of research). Looked like a fun version with a beautiful way to play. But money is tight and i'm not spending $40 for Connect Four...no matter how pretty it may be.
So, imagine my suprise when I'm at DI today and i look down and there's a wood box in the game section. I think that looks pretty similar to Captains Mistress. I pull up the lid about half way and see "captian's Mistress" printed on the inside...I had it in my hands before the box even shut.
Quick inventory says the box is in great shape (few scratches, but i'll add a few at the next faire I take it to) and there's even an extra ball of each color!
all for $2. The Best part is, i left the plastic $3 copy of connect four behind....

I know its a kids game so that's maybe why I haven't picked it up. But I love this game and I've played it tons of times in the past and will certainly do so as a filler once I do get a copy. Opening up the slot and watching everything drop is a definitely plus.

Legend has it that originally the game was played on a large field with real ponies jumping over each other to make 4 in a row. The tradition ended when one uncoordinated pony tripped up a row of 10 other ponies, breaking a leg on each, leading to a mass euthanization of red and yellow ponies.
Now, the game is played with little plastic discs. Obviously, the lack of ponies reduces the game's appeal. Boo.

It's trivially adaptable to paper-and-pencil but people tend often to miss it for some reason... maybe the use of the gravity?

As Isaiah was helping in Thebes Shaea was called on to play Reasor in four rounds of Connect Four. The final tally? Shaea won 3 games and Reasor won one. Shaea's challenge was amplified by playing this game at the same time she was playing Thebes. Wayne said "A true mom!"
Isaiah took his turn with Reasor next. Two games were played and Reasor won both.
Game total after Connect Four? Eight games played.
