Another great game destoyed by the AAA's insistance on publishing a full list of every house in the USA that had a poster of an Autoduel arena.

Expansions weren't the problem. The 5th edition killed the game by an attempt to move to a "Collectible" model.

Ok, Tanks was a bit sucky. But Boat Wars and Aeroduel both expanded the game in useful ways for those of us running it as an RPG.

Even late in the line, really, all one needed was the Compendium, some road grid, dice and some counters. And the revised compendia (2nd ed & black cover) streamlined the game a bit again.

But it was ot really an RPG, well not at first. I wouod say that defiens a game with too many expansios, it tries to be everything.

It was as much an RPG in the basic pocket box as it was later. Everyone I knew who played it played it as an RPG, based upon the basic box, and it was stocked in the RPG section of all 4 game stores that carried it.

It was, from the start, about making your driver & gunner better by dueling. And the first scenario I recall seeing published was Convoy - a programmed RPG mode adventure. And RPG-mode adventures were common through the run of ADQ.

The game had two very different constituencies: The Duelists seeing it as a pocket box wargame, and the RPGers, seeing it as a rules light RPG.

Steve Jackson has a history of blurring that line: The Fantasy Trip, Car Wars, GURPS/Man-To-Man...

And in the late 80's, the line was still blurry ... many RPG's combat systems were tactical boardgames, or were adapted to/from such games: Traveller/Snapshot&Mayday, DragonQuest, Warhammer FRP 1E, Warhammer 40K (sold as a "3D roleplay game" according to the sticker on 2E), FASA-Trek, Mechwarrior/Battletech, Renegade Legion...

Four or five years ago I found this at one of my local Sally Annes, still in the plastic, mint condition. It was downstairs in the "as is" section and I believe that I paid $12CDN for it.

I still haven't found anyone to play it with me, but there was no way I could pass up such a deal on such an old, campy product.

Got this game on the recommendation of the local hobby store. Several of us would get together in the children's library section of the local library. We'd usually have 4 to 5 players. It was a bit of an obsession for a while.

Did Autoduel Gurps that way, but I can't say that
feels like what I'd consider the 'Car Wars' experience.

Had a nice duel track campaign, where people had whole
stables of vehicles and drivers. The core group wasn't
big, but we'd pick up more folk at open gaming.

Then you didn't play CW in RP mode. You played GURPS.

Never could seem to get SJG to understand the difference, either.

b) I need to weld some grills over the windows and attach a few guns.

d) Better check underneath for car bombs.

Wishlist 2: Love to Have

This one looks very interesting for a good reason: It plays fast, looks reasonably deep and should support team play without any problems while providing tons of replay value.

However and while it has a quite dedicated following I can't help but think that this might not be a "10" game but only a very good one or that I might really be looking for something lighter.

On the bright side, it's very cheap to get the rules and you can use matchbox cars IIRC.

How's the fifht edition btw?

UPDATE 5/01/2012: This is rising meteorically, and it really shouldn't a big surprise.

Sure, it might not be a 10 game but it fills a particular niche that no other game I know will. The theme is great, it's not as complicated as other wargames of it's kind and plays well with teams, free for all and scenarios while being quite interesting, many games seem to be either too complex to really get to the table or too simple to satiate the hardcore needs of my friends but this one doesn't.

So far I lean towards fifth edition. While I can see why the lack of vehicle design rules is a huge turn-off for many, it seems there's enough vehicle variety for a good while so it isn't a problem and gameplay wise I haven't been told of any big losses or even many small ones.

It CAN play fast but you really need to prepare ahead of time. Each player should have a copy of the movement chart and the handling and crash tables.

Pre-made cars should be a must for your first few games. After that, half the fun/battle is designing your own vehicles. I would recommend the spreadsheet by SPARK

http://www.cwspark.org/downloads/vehicles/

Since I have been playing Car Wars from the original zip loc version, my opinion of Fifth Edition (I don't like it) may be skewed. They are easy and cheap in the US - if you can get one for a decent price, give it a whirl.

Noted. Those can be easily printed so it shouldn't be a problem.

Well, I'm not in the US but it's true they are pretty cheap. At 6$ per book it's a lot of bang for your buck!
No, not really. 2 cars, 3-4 variants without sheets, and a 3x scale turning key and 2-4 counters.

It really isn't that much bang for the buck, and the second is LESS bang for the buck, as the rules are 90% identical.

That makes me wonder, how much would Car Wars Compedium cost?

US$14.99 for Revised 2E in PDF. http://e23.sjgames.com/item.html?id=SJG30-7142

I, too, don't much like 5th ed: it takes too much table space, lacks a design/modification system, and doesn't have a whole lot of variety. The little bit more simplicity was not worth the loss of design rules.

Other than the lack of building your own vehicles what do you think 5e did wrong so as not have much variety in comparison? You can get technical, don't worry

The lack of a design system, the lack of a consolidated rulebook (each duel book has some elements not in others - mostly weapon mechanics.

by not publishing the design rules, one is limited to the 25 to 30 published designs. And while there were 9 books with 2 each, and most have 2 variants, the variants are not significantly different.

Further, the published designs are all duelist vehicles in 5E. No decent highway haulers. No lorries, no big rigs. And there went 90% of my games...

The lack of a design system in print means one can't modify cars, either, save by GM fiat.

It lacks the character rules in any meaningful "not just a car component" way. Yes, it has almost as many skills as the pocket box... but lacking decent pedestrian rules means many scenarios are right out the window. And it loses the function as a Role-playing game, as well.

The collectible format, as well, made for needless increased expense. I hate buying the same rules 5 times...

Now, a good set of 1mm thick vinyl counters, I'd be thrilled...

Quote:
I also wonder, does 5e have scenarios? I know Car Wars Compedium does but not 5e.

Not really... it's pretty much just duels.

Then, if you like MiniCW, pick up the PDF of the Car Wars Compendium. If you find a black-and-green copy of compendium, pick it up in dead tree; likewise, a "Deluxe Box" with the maps and counters is a good option, and should have a copy of compendium.

The Car Wars Compedium has two editions, guess it's the later one?

Actually, 3 editions, plus the original Deluxe Rulebook

White Deluxe Rulebook
Blue 1st edition Compendium
Blue 2nd edition compendium (labeled "second edition" in red on the front)
Black & green "2nd edition Compendium". It includes some errata, and is the edition available in PDF from e23.sjgames.com.

Keep in mind - if all you want is duels with premade stuff, CW5 is worth it. For those of us who saw CW as RPG, CW5 is a total waste of money.

Pretty much agree with what was said and IMHO, I don't like CW5 and I only play CW as a boardgame.

The other things I didn't like about CW 5.0 was the three phase turn. Your vehicle would move too far per phase making ram attacks that much easier. Additionally, the fact that you could only fire when you moved (unless fired upon) was too much of a change from the Compendium rules.

One thing I did like was that movement was "one inch per 10 mph of speed" rather than having to consult a movement chart. However, that only works because the vehicles were 3X the size of regular Car Wars and because there were only three phases per turn.

Seeing that a PDF of the Compendium is only $14.99, that would be my recommendation.

That can be mimicked with a 4-phase turn, moving 1/4" per 10 mph per phase.

Per 10 MPH: 1/4" per each phase
+2.5MPH: +1/4" in phase 1
+5 mph: +1/4" in phases 1 & 3
+7.5 mph: +1/4 in phases 1, 2, & 3.

NOW it's easy enough to do it. Except that it means 40 MPH before a maneuver is easily done with a turning key.

Hi everyone! Those days I have been busy reading about the topic and trying the Mini Car Wars mini rules. They are great! Just adding the finesse to each of the mechanisms with scenarios would alredy make the game I want so I'm about to get Car Wars Compedium unless yoou think CW5 is better for that, which doesn't seem so.

Yes, this means a sizable part of the Compendium is kind of a hassle, I can't see myself using Helicopters or Boats anytime soon.

I have also discovered a Spanish edition of the compedium. Apparently when roleplaying games were starting to get released into Spain, Car Wars was one of them and, sure enough, the 2e Compedium was the version used for the translation. I'm very fortunate because unlike many other games picked up by the publisher this one was tretaed well and is not missing pictures or entire parts of the rulebook. The cover is the one with a car and a helicopter but I'm positive it's not the first edition of the compedium because of the release date (1991).

I can get the Spanish Compendium alone or I can pay 10 more Euro to also get two expansions in very good condition (L'Outrange and Muskogee Mayhem). Are they worth it or should I stick to the compedium and check them if I'm still interested?

I'm also interested in pimping the game out of the box and making it both more appealing and more playable. so I'm going to need a lot of help here. Besides the obvious, it's also a way to dodge the Imperial system you crazy Americans like to use. Everything is in Inches so I can just use Inch (or half-inch) as a scale unit and work from there.

I'm thinking about upscaling the game to Micromachine scale which, according to most sources, is 1.5X. Matchbox scale looks cool but I noticed how much space it would take for most scenarios and decided against it so I will stick to Micromachines.

Something I see a lot of people doing is using both a Turning Key and a grid. Why is that so? I can see it being useful, it would make all distances even but is it worth it compared to just using the key? I'm not opposed to redrawing maps, it doesn't look particularly difficult to do so usability is the main factor.

Quote:
Keep in mind - if all you want is duels with premade stuff, CW5 is worth it. For those of us who saw CW as RPG, CW5 is a total waste of money.

I can very much see how losing the campaing/RPG rules is a huge letdown, they seem to be a lot of fun if you have a group for it. That said, I don't think we would ever play campaigns, my group simply shouldn't be allowed play a RPG. Ever. Just trying to remember it makes me nervous*

That said, I think that just duels would quickly get stale, I'm looking for close-ended scenarios to add variety to the game. Things like protecting a truck or the stuff included in Midville look quite up my alley even if I don't particularly care for big rigs or guys on foot.

I just want something more interesting that just shooting to each other.

Thanks a lot for the help!

Not always - many people use stock vehicles (and no edition comes with LESS than a dozen except 5th - which has no customization to speak of, and no official design system.)

I wish SJ Games would do a new edition of Car Wars. I don't need the ridiculous number-crunching customization of the older editions, but I do want some customization and not just stock vehicles. The potential for streamlining this game is there.

Now, that would be something. I have fond memories of CW from the late 80s, but relearning the old rules would be a chore.

A friend of mine keeps suggesting we try this 'for old times' sake', but that's probably because he never lost a battle against anyone – not even when the rest of us ganged up on him. We all agree that designing cars was a major part of the fun, but while most of us just picked parts that seemed cool, he did the math, came up with some unbeatable combos and proceeded to turn our cars into debris counters. (It had something to do with rockets and targeting lasers... I hate those!)

But boy, was it fun... finding out that someone had actually tried to put together a 5K compact armed with a ram plate... realizing that your latest, greatest design (with the best name ever!) was just shot to bits after less than five seconds on the road... ah, the memories...

This is my most beloved game.
I've fond memories, and a lot of anectodes about street combats.
The ability to "tell" a story, to transform a mechanic in somewhat epic, the "pre-game" game struggling to build the best car with the given funds (way before Magic and his deck building)...there's only another game that i played the same amount and returned the same fun, which is Space Crusade. But Car Wars beat it 'cause the car building process.

A much deserved entry. I feel the same way about Battletech, so much of the game was working out the best payload and combination of mechs with the given weight/credit/unit limits. Ahhhh, good times

Battletech is third in my list just 'cause it is basically a 2 players game (i have the luck to have a large group of playing friends), and with the two i previously mentioned it is the last of the games that i'll never sell, even if i don't play them in years.

Here now for your Geekgold tipping consideration is a used copy of the Car Wars Deluxe Edition. This game is in great shape for its age, but I really don't see my wife and I taking the time to learn it (and I'd rather use her tolerance for combat-related games on other titles.)

This was a garage sale find. The box lid is somewhat smooshed, but none of the corners are blown out. All of the contents listed on the back of the box are there - rules, maps (both the truck stop and extra-large town), etc. I inventoried the counters and by my count at least 295 of the 300 advertised on the box are present. If you have any specific questions about counters or any other components please let me know!

Shipping: Free in the USA, and I'll pay the first $20 internationally.
If this item reaches 250 I'll pay the first $15 internationally. - ACHIEVED!
If this item reaches 400 I'll pay the first $20 internationally. - ACHIEVED!
If this item reaches 600 I'll pay the first $25 internationally.

Item will be drawn on October 29, using Sol's Copycat Awesome Tool.

Entries:

1 = 1 entry
10 = 12 entries
25 = 35 entries

Edited on 10/26 with shipping updates.

That's right... I LOVE CAR WARS! That's probably an understatement ever since I picked up a copy of the deluxe box set I have been reading the rules and playing it non-stop! Unfortunately I don't own any expansions but I still enjoy the game greatly.

Honorable Mention:
Do your self a favour and check out this site ( http://www.seanet.com/~owenmp/swathome.html) if you are even slightly interested in auto duelling. The guy who owns it is great and his site is very informative.

Yep, lots of fun. Won in a Tournament where the final 2 (me and the now dearly departed) dueled around the city-scape arena for about a half-hour. He finally had to abandon his car and run for a sanctuary and I was going too fast to make the turn to run him down. Went the other way instead, cut loose with the oil slick as I made the turn, and as he was in the arc of the spray totally soaking him in oil, then popped a flare, made the GMs roll to see if it ignited the oil, and watched him become a...non-viable life-form.

One of the best

In the future, players choose vehicles with not just custom engines, suspensions, and other car parts, but also weapons and armor. The winners come back with more abilities and money to buy upgrades. It is a little expensive but fairly easy to find a working copy of Car Wars.

In the early 2000's I picked up the deluxe edition of this that had pretty much the entire run. Only played it a handful of times but it was an absolute blast. Probably straddles the boarder between AT and wargame though.

Favorite Car Wars stories:

* One summer my friend decided to play car wars with his friends. They brought all their spare military model kits together and bashed out model cars reflecting the car they would drive in the game. They then scaled the game up to play on a garage floor, and modeled the damage suffered with soldering irons and stuff.

* Friend shows up for Car Wars with the military handbook. Normally the group would spend 150,000 on a car (which is quite a bit) and take an hour to kit out rolling death machines. Friend finishes his car in 5 minutes. Game starts, and my other friend is rolling in a compact car kitted out with all kinds of weapons, and is redlining the thing through the city streets. Here comes the first friend, bouncing down the street in his unmarked van, complete with armored beer cooler, 8-track player, and PA system so he can bump to Low Rider. He's doing about... 15mph, the compact is doing like... 70. They pull onto the same street and face off.

The van's driver says "Hidden weapon compartment."

Compact driver says "Okay what pops out?"

Van driver: "The entire back half of the van pops off. It's a cruise missile."

Compact driver: "A WHAT??? How much damage does that do?"

Van: "Um... *looks* 15 dice" (For reference a machine gun does like 2d6)

Compact: "Oh sh*t oh sh*t oh sh*t"

At which point the compact driver exits stage right into an alley, making a 90 degree turn at 60mph into an alleyway that's about 5 feet wider than his car, hoping to god to make it out of the alley before the van caught up.

Best. Turn. Ever.

Car Wars was another favorite of mine back in the day. I had a huge collection of stuff for it... but unlike many of the other games on this list, it didn't hold up quite as well for me. While I'd still be interested in playing a game of Ogre right now, I'm not so sure I could say the same of Car Wars. I wound up selling everything off in a lot on eBay for way less than it was probably worth.

I enjoyed this game. I'm still a bit of a sucker for any, 'Cars with guns' game. The problem I had with this back in the day was that it was that you could goof designing your car and give yourself an unfair advantage.

Now with spreadsheets and calculators, things are great. I keep meaning to break this out again and play it.
