This week's Game Night we started out with Tales & Games: The Hare & the Tortoise, a racing game where players are moving animals around the track, hoping their animal crosses the finish line first.

Players will begin by setting up the track in any way they see fit, placing start lines and finish lines at the beginning and end of the track. All players then receive a betting card which has one of the five animals on it. This will be one of the animals they will try to get to the finish line. Everyone now receives seven cards. Each player will choose one of these cards to place with their betting card. Their goal will now be to have these two animals (or one if doubling up on the same animal) to the finish line as quick as possible. Play now begins with the starting player.

On their turn, a player is able to play any number of cards (up to 4) of the same animal. They may never play more than four cards of the same animal. This means that if a previous player had played two tortoise cards for instance, no more than two additional tortoises are able to be played during the round. Players may also never play more than eight cards altogether during a round. This means that if on their turn seven cards have been played, the current player can only play one card. After playing cards, players will always take cards to build their hand back up to six cards.

Once either four of the same animal cards or eight different cards have been played during the round, the movement phase occurs. During this phase, each animal is moved in order in a way to specific only to that animal depending on how many cards were played during the round. For instance, the tortoise will always move one space even if no tortoise cards were played and move two spaces when four tortoise cards were played. However, in the case of the hare, he will always move two spaces as long as at least one hare card was played unless he is in first place. In these cases, he wouldn't move at all.

In rare situations, a wolf card can be played which has a howl icon on it. In these cases, during the movement phase, only the wolf will move.

Players continue to play their cards in rounds and taking movement phases when necessary. As animals cross the finish line, they are placed on the podiums in first, second and third place. After the third animal has crossed the finish line, players then show their two betting cards. Players now receive points based on their bets, five points for first, three points for second and two points for third. After adding up their points, the player with the most points wins. Additional races can be played and scores added up between rounds.

The Hare & the Tortoise is a good little racing game that's easily approachable for children, but still remains an enjoyable experience for adults. I like the mechanic of how movement works and how each animal has its own way of moving. It's all put together in a really cool little package to make for a really fun time.

Next up, we played Seventh Hero. In this game, players are trying to collect six heroes with slight bluffing, using their powers and a maybe with a little bit of luck.

The game begins with each player being dealt two unique heroes. If both heroes are the same, players will receive another card until both heroes are different. Five cards are then dealt to each player and play begins with the starting player.

On their turn, the player will flip the top card and see what their quest is. Quests are listed on each card and inform players of which card they must pass from their hand. The player will now look through his hand and choose one of his cards which matches the quest and passes it to the left face down on the table. Should a player have no card which matches that of the quest, they take the top card of the deck and pass this card face down instead.

Players are trying to collect six unique heroes. When a card is passed to a player, they can choose to take it and see if they can add it to their group of heroes or they can pass it to the next player. If the card ever reaches the player who played it, they must take it.

As long as the card is unique to their group, players may add it to their group. However, if the card is the same as any hero they already have in their adventuring group, they must discard BOTH cards, the one they took and the one it matched.

Players are allowed to use the powers of any heroes they've already collected. For instance, the Oracle is able to view the card passed to the player. Once the power is used, players must tap the card as to show its power has been used.

Play will continue around the table with each player turning over a card, choosing a card to follow the quest, passing the card around the table to be taken by a player and then drawing back up to five cards. Once a player has collected six heroes, the game ends and they are the winner.

Seventh Hero is a very fast and quite enjoyable game. For a game which only has seven cards, there's a good amount of things going on. I like how each card has multiple uses, being a quest as well as a power. I can see this as one of those that comes out often and is played over and over without growing tired of it. The only thing I really don't understand is that box size. It takes up way too much room, but that doesn't take away from the gameplay.

We then moved on to TransAmerica, a game where players are building railways across America, trying to connect their five cities.

Players begin by receiving five cards, one of each color. Each player will then set out their player token on one of their cities to be their starting city. Play will then begin with the starting player.

On their turn, a player will be able to place one or two rails. They must always place their rails in a way so that it connects back to their starting city. Each spot on the board will show one or two lines. Two lines always appear on mountain and river sections. When placing a rail on these areas, it counts as two rails so no additional rails may be placed on that turn.

During play, a player may be able to connect to another player's rail system. If they do so, they may now use this rail system as their own and connect to other sections not previously available to them.

Play will continue until a player has successfully connected all five of their cities. The other players will now lose points based on how far they are from cities they have not yet reached. These points are denoted on the score track and player pieces are moved accordingly. If after two rounds players still have more than 4 points, a rail is set two points ahead of the player in last place. This is to help move the game along and limit time of play.

Players will play multiple rounds until one player has lost all of their points (or cross over the rail placed after round two). The player who has the most points remaining wins.

Man, I must have a thing for train games. It seems to never matter how the game plays, it's all about those trains. That being said, TransAmerica is awesome. I really love it. It's super relaxed and watching the rails grow across the board is really good fun. It doesn't quite reach the greatness of Ticket to Ride (in my opinion), but man, it certainly comes close. Excellent game.

Moving right along we played 10 Days in the USA, a game where players are trying to cross the country by collecting cards and placing them in order to visit each state appropriately.

The game begins with each player receiving two racks numbered Day 1 - 10. The map board is then laid out on the table. This board is only for reference and isn't actually played on. The cards are then spread out and players take one card at a time and add it anywhere on their rack. Once it is placed, it cannot be moved. Once all players have added ten cards to their racks, the cards are collected into a stack. The top three cards are laid out face up to create three discard piles and play begins with the starting player.

Players are attempting to set up their racks in order to visit states either by connecting bordering states or connecting them with a car or an airplane. Cars are used to connect a state to another as long as both states are separated by just one state. Airplanes are able to be used to fly to any state however, the airplane must match the color of at least one of the states, either the one coming from or the one going to.

On their turn, a player may take one of two actions. The first action is to take a card from either the deck or any one of the three discard piles. When taking a card, they will swap out any card from their rack and discard it. There must always be three discard piles so, if by taking a card it emptied a discard pile, they must discard to where they emptied. Also, if a player takes from the deck, they do not have to swap out the card and may just discard it to a pile of their choice. The other action players may take is to swap two cards already in their racks.

Play continues with each player taking turns, adding cards to their racks and swapping cards around. Once a player has successfully completed a full 10 day trip, they are the winner of the game.

10 Days in the USA is really just themed Rack-O. The theme suits the game well though. I like how large jumps between states can be made with the airplanes, but how cars are able to cut off one state. It's a neat concept and plays pretty well and racks your brain without being overly complicated.

We ended the night with Fauna. In this game, players are using their knowledge of animals (or lack thereof) betting on where they believe animals live and who much they weigh or how long or tall they are.

Players each receive six betting cubes. A seventh cube is used for scoring purposes and is placed on the scoring track. Play begins with the starting player taking the cards.

On their turn, the player will read the name of the animal. They will then inform all players of how many areas the animal is found in, and informing them of how the animal will be measured (usually in weight and length and sometimes the tail length). Players will now take turns putting out betting cubes either in one of the areas they feel the animal lives in or in one of the measuring areas. Players are allowed to pass and other players may continue placing cubes until they run out or they pass.

Once all players have placed their cubes, the starting player for the round then reveals the information from the card about the animal. Black cubes are placed out on the map and in the measurement section for each correct spot. Once all black cubes have been set out on the board, players now look to see how they have scored. On the map, players will score points for placing their betting cubes in the correct areas or adjacent areas. Players receive different points based on how many correct areas they have guessed, always receiving more points for a correct bet and a few less points for an adjacent.

Players then check measurements (weight, length, height and tail length). Once again, they will receive points for correct guesses or adjacent ones. If players are correct or adjacent to a correct answer, they receive their cube back. However, if they guess wrong, they lose the cube.

Once all areas and measurements have been scored, players wipe the board and the cards move to the next player. Players then receive one betting cube back (if they've lost any) and always will have at least three cubes to play with in a round.

Play will continue with players guessing on locations and measurements of the animals. Once a player has scored a certain amount of points based on player number, the game ends and the player with the most points wins.

Fauna takes my interest in animals and turns it into a really enjoyable game. I'm not the greatest at knowing everything there is to know about animals, and if I didn't know that before, this game certainly makes me aware. That being said, you never really feel as if you're just terrible and you usually feel like you're in it for the most part. Even if you don't know a thing about the animal in question, you can usually follow your opponents and do well...or you all fail! Lots of fun and really turns learning into a fun experience.

So that's it! Another awesome Game Night. We had a great time living out the Hare and the Tortoise story, collecting heroes for adventure, building railways across America, visiting different states in America and learning all about different animals of the world. As always, thanks for reading and thumbing and commenting! See ya next week!

$2.99...Burien VV
Winning Moves German Edition
Missing only 2 of the 85 tracks

My dad's visiting from Minnesota, so I delivered him to a get together with an old work colleague. While they had a leisurely lunch, I zipped around to 13 thrift stores in Burien, Tukwila, Kent, and Renton. Only had luck at two of them. Three games at Burien Value Village and two at Kent St. Vincent de Paul. Passed on a lot of games I may have picked up a couple of years ago...space is becoming an issue.

we also stopped in at the Dearborn goodwill. Nothing of interest on the normal game shelves. We stopped into the collectible area before leaving I found nothing interesting. However, my fiancé says "Andrew have you heard of this game?" I looked over to her and saw this gem in her hands. A bit pricey at 12.99 but the game is in pristine condition.

We should be able to get this one to the table tonight to try it out.
