As soon as I played Kamon, I wanted to pimp those stones. The board is detailed, the kamon markers are beautiful, but the player stones were plain and boring.

Kamon has a Egyptian theme (I believe the name comes from the French way of saying King Tut: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tout%C3%A2nkhamon), so I wanted Egyptian lotus patterns on the stones, but I couldn't find any that were symetrical so I decided to go for Japanese crest designs (which are called "kamon")

A sample game.

By request, my copy of Kamon came out today for a comparison with yesterday's Okiya. Three games in ~45 minutes with Hugh taking the first by trapping me, the second by creating a span, and losing the third to a span he couldn't block.

While Kamon is very obviously related to Okiya, it has a somewhat different feel because of two things.
1. the typical span winning condition is much more extensive on the larger board, so you need to work a lot harder to make it happen as well as allowing you some leeway to recover by building around a block.
2. The second winning condition, the loop, is really interesting because a thwarted connection can turn into one of these relatively easily.

Otherwise the main difference is length and the sort of build traps and execute them feel, compared to Okiya's immediate battle.

I finally printed off the rules for Kamon so I could play with my set. I haven't quite got the strategy yet, but I'm slowly getting there. I want to figure out a way to pretty up the "stone" discs so that they look more like stones.

TUAW readers don't like that I called the $2 app "pricey," but didn't seem to get that I meant $5 for the iPhone and iPad apps, when this should be a $2 universal program. Whatever. Kamon on your iDevice is worth it – as long as you don't feel the need for both versions (standard and HD).

In this marvelous game, when you make a play, you replace a token that has essentially a suit and a value. You replace it with one of your pieces. Now your opponent must replace a token either of the same suit or same value as the one you just replaced. Since the playfield is eroding, and the options dwindling, the choices get more and more insidious. Not only can you win by preventing your opponent from making a valid play, you can also win by completely surrounding some spaces, or by connecting two opposite sides of the board!

Requirements:
7 suits of hexpack hexes (6 suits of 0-5 plus any one other hex)
sixpack of piecepack or hexpack coins (0-5 in three red suits and three black suits)
1 piecepack pawn
the rules

Randomly set up the board with the 37 hexes, then the start player takes the mismatched hex and the 18 black coins. The other player uses the 18 red coins.
Use the pawn to mark the play just made each time, rather than picking up the hexes.

Kamon are the Japanese equivalents of European coats of arms. They serve to distinguish families from one another and were used from ancient times to mark their stuff. Since this game was developed with the help of a bunch of Japanese friends (and my Japanese wife), I wanted to include their own family kamon in the design for Genji. I decided to use them as a kind of player insignia, used on the Home markers and Livery tokens in the game. They are in each player's colour, but I have done my best to make these symbols colourblind friendly. I concentrated on differences in design and depth of colour so that - even if looked at only in greyscale - the icons are reasonably easy to tell apart. I realize that colourblindness is not a question of seeing things in black and white, but I thought that would be the most effective way to make the chits clear and easy to tell apart.

Below are five of the kamon included, each one is either a friend, a member of the family, or was a playtester for the game.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.

1.Friend we met in Sri Lanka
2.My "adoptive" Japanese family
3.Wife
4.In-laws
5.Playtester and friend from here in Sri Lanka

The house symbols are something I thought were rather cool. I needed something to denote direction, and I wanted to tie it in with my "ancient characters" design theme. I noted that the ancient Chinese character for "house" had a bit of a pointy top, so I amalgamated the kamon and the symbol for "house" into a unified house marker.

The one remaining kamon has a special story behind it, and I think it deserves its own entry...
