I love the flavour of this game and I always wonder why it sits on the shelf for so long. Then I play a game. Then I dont wonder why it sits on the shelf.

I think this would have been a good game if they hadn't tried so hard to make it compatable with the herocard system.

The Herocard Nightmare
HeroCard Nightmare is a surreal psychological thriller in which the last surviving dreamer wins. Nightmare blends deductive, clue-like gameplay with fast-paced HeroCard dueling, and sets them inside a modular, ever-changing landscape of gothic horror. Nightmare is compatible with all the other HeroCard games.

Language: English. Extensive use of text
Edition: Table star games first edition

No. Came up missing. Embarassing. I am pretty sure someone is borrowing my games and not telling me.

As far as theming goes, one doesn't get much better than this for a Friday the 13th session, and Ryan and I were extremely surprised at how good of a game this is. We dug it out again and played on Saturday, and we're interested in trying it again with more people some time soon.

The idea is that you play one of four dreamers who are trapped inside of a shared dream. At the start of the game, every player receives a premonition of their death scene (involving a location and a killer), and this is then what they are "scared" of for the rest of the game.

The board consists of hexes that are various potential death-scene locations (cabin, graveyard, forest, etc) and pawns of potential killers (zombie, stalker, leviathan, werewolf), and one "dreamer" pawn (representing all dreamers at once).

For a turn, you may take three actions (move the dreamer to an adjacent connected "scene", move a killer to a connected scene, or move a hex to anywhere on the board).

The goal of the game is to kill off the other players by attacking them with their death monster in their death scene. But you don't know what their death scene is -- you only know what yours is. So you set up potential scenarios with the dreamer and one or more monsters, and you declare that you're "attacking to scare". When you attack to scare, if you are successful in your attack, then every dreamer who has either a location card or a killer card matching the current location / killer setup must declare that they are "scared" -- though they don't reveal what in particular they're scared of (killer or location) -- just that they are scared.

So if I know that Michael was scared in the graveyard with the zombie, and scared with the zombie in the forest, then I know he's at least afraid of the zombie, though I don't yet know if he's scared of the graveyard or forest (if either). If nobody is scared in an otherwise successful scare attack, then the location and all killers involved in the attack are removed from the game, to help narrow things down. So the game gets real tight real fast, and there are some fantastic deduction mechanics here that I find far more interesting than Clue -- largely in part because there is a huge bluffing mechanic available. As you're arranging and deciding what to attack, it's very revealing (or very misleading).

Once I finally believe I know what the exact combination is for a dreamer's feared death scene, I can then set up the appropriate scene (involving killer and location), declare that I am "attacking to kill Michael in the graveyard with the zombie" (as opposed to scare), and if I am successful in my dueling attack, and Michael is in fact scared of the zombie in the graveyard, then he is killed, and those elements are removed from the game, and the narrowed-down game continues until everyone is eliminated. Though once people start dying off, it's generally getting towards the end of the game anyways, and you have a pretty good idea of who is scared of what.

So along with this great deduction theme / structure, there's the underlying HeroCard combat system which fits the theme nicely. You have hand management, tableau management, and some slick special abilities that just make for some tense dueling situations.

HeroCard Nightmare is a unique gem of a game. It's unlike any other that I've played, in that it combines bluffing, heavy deduction, hand-management card-combat, and (very) temporary alliances for >2 player games. It does have elimination, but that seems like that's generally at the end of the game.

I'm surprised it's not more popular, and it's a really nice simple-but-deep game involving deduction -- something all-to-uncommon in euros.

Overall, HeroCard Nightmare is thumbsup thumbsup from me.

Game #6 of 9 of a local purchase for $55, or ~$6.11 each

This one sounded really neat -- it sounds like a deduction style game with tangential conflict, but using the same Herocard system as the other games. Neat!

This looked interesting so I started hunting for a copy. I found them on ebay for $7.97 with free shipping. I picked up a copy but there are 9 left. Not sure about posting links but if you search for HeroCard Nightmare and filter for buy it now it's the listing without a photo. Just wanted to share in case anyone else was looking to try the game.

The winner is:

for $6.

Why It's Cool: It's a horror-themed, dueling card game with a splash of deduction thrown in. Considered by some to be one of the best of the HeroCard series.

Condition: Excellent, except that one of the arms of one of the plastic figures has broken off (though the arm is still in the game and can thus be glued back in place).
