A co-op/modern Euro classic. I don't play it as much as I should, but I recognize its place in our hobby. (Also, haven't played Cranium Cariboo.)

Personally, I don't enjoy this game as a coop but I love it as a solo. As a coop, it's just too easy for one person to take it over. Still, an excellent game.

I haven't really had any problems with one person taking over (though maybe it's because I'm the person taking over, and am unaware of it, heh). I do mostly play solo, though.

Also, On the Brink is possibly my favorite game expansion ever.

I didn't realize my wife was so theme-sensitive until I bought several games for us one Christmas. She took one look at this and said, "Send it back." No way was she going to play a game about combating some terrible disease. In fact, she didn't even want the game in the house.

I played it a couple times solo, then traded it away.

Mr. Jack didn't go over well either. I traded it away too, but through a strange twist of fate, I ended up with another copy. She says we can play it someday, though she's not thrilled about it.

I don't really understand this one. Isn't it a noble act to cure diseases? In Mr. Jack one of the players has to be a murderer, but in Pandemic you're all "the good guys."

I might have thought that too. From my wife's POV:

1. Just putting so much attention on deadly diseases creates bad vibes. Better to focus on positive things.

2. Science is so slow and Western medicine so short-sighted that in the process of fighting these pandemics, the "heroes" are likely causing more problems than they're fixing.

My wife isn't a fan, so I'll be looking for something we'll be more likely to play together.

It's only been played about three times, and is in great condition. I'd love a local sale or trade so I don't have to pay for shipping, but all offers will be considered!

All sorts of tokens are now available for Pandemic.

Discussed here: What kind of custom tokens would people want?

More pictures:

These have been quickly filled with oil pastel to see how long it takes (not long).

These were speed paint washed

No coloring applied

I've been working on a "cut-through" version. Not satisfied with the results so far, but getting there.

Setting up the player deck requires that you know how many are playing.

More than once I have dealt out the starting hands, divided the rest of the deck into piles, shuffled in the epidemic cards, stacked the piles, and only THEN does someone else say they want to join in. Search through the deck and take the epidemic cards out, gather back up the starting hands, deal out new starting hands with a different number of cards than before, redivide the deck into piles, re shuffle in the epidemic cards, re stack them, only to have another person wander by and say "is it too late to join in?"

Maybe too subjective comment (as always from any human being) but i HATE this game!

i have played it 3 times, and didn´t catch up the fun, because is like a puzzle that one can solve alone, but in this time you put more heads and screw all the game, i really don´t like the setting (even that i made jokes about veneric sickness) but the game is autokilling and too random, the player have little to do than to do their single job.

(I´m a co-op disliker/naysayer, but this game kills my nerves zombie)

It's thematic and it has attractive components. It has elegant mechanics with an appropriate amount of depth and so much of it works so well. I really wanted to like this game, and I gave it about a half dozen plays before finally deciding that it wasn't a game for me. Part of it is the experience of co-ops leaves me cold, especially when it turns into group think.

This and AH were my first purchase of "real" boardgames. We liked this one quite a bit, but after half a year it felt samey and everybody who had time to try it liked AH better anyhow. So my impression was that it's actually dry and abstract in comparison to AH, but kept it as a pick for nongamers.

Last month I was visiting an euro gaming group and can't emphasise what a relief was playing Pandemic after Taj Mahal: intuitive play that made thematic sense and people talking to each other.

The game that from the moment you began has decided whether or not you will win. It doesn't matter if you make every decision perfectly, if the cards are in a certain order, you will simply lose.

The same can be said for most Co-Ops, so the story that is told is the key, but this one is so abstract, there is no meaningful story to experience.

I find the game mechanics to be interesting and the theme well done. But I hate playing it because it really is a solo game pretending to be a co-op. One person inevitably tells everyone else what to do each turn. And doing so is the only way to win.

Not a fan.

OK, first of: this isn't personally aimed at you two, but I've seen this sentiment a hundred times now and your comments happened to be the one that finally blew of the lid.

Seriously, why is this such a big problem for so many people? Are we all too spineless to take our own course of action in a game? Are we only playing this with bullies that ruin the game if we don't do what they want? Is it only possible to have fun if you win?

If so, may I suggest either a new spine or a new playgroup for the people who need hidden information in a coop to prevent a vocal player dominating the game? And might I suggest a proper solo game or a crash course in social experience for the people who feel the need to dictate everyone else's moves for optimal play? Sheesh!

I was right with you up until the but (isn't that how it always works)! I think there are stories to be told, especially when playing this game with travelers.

The number of times I've been in stitches at mates recounting their bad street food experiences in the Middle East or China before being humbled that Sydney was the location of the most recent outbreak have been impressive. It is a running joke now.

I guess, like any blank canvas, a story is waiting to be told and my gaming group gets particularly enamored whenever there is a world map and an opportunity to share travel stories.

36 Pandemic vs. 05 Power Grid

Third Round: d. El Grande 733-628
Second Round: d. Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization 631-611
First Round: d. Ora et Labora 702-349

Comment: El Grande misses a title for the first time in its career, having never exited lower than a quarter-finalist. Pandemic forces sick leave upon the perennial contender. Now it faces the one that sent it home last year.

Rematch: 2011 2nd Round rematch. PG easily beat Pandemic 516-381

Saving the world from outbreaks of disease is themeless? What would you prefer? Elves and wizards fighting dragons? Martial artists fighting ghosts? Treasure-hunting on a sinking continent? Now this is just plain ignorant. This is like saying someone is immature because they don't listen to the same music as you do or like the same movies you do.

There are plenty of mature science fiction and fantasy books and movies out there (see Ursula K. Le Guin, Philip K. Dick and others). Just because someone prefers these themes to others does not make them immature. Sure some might, but you can't just put a blank statement out there (well, you can, but it makes you look ignorant).

I can understand that many people like pop music (although I don't understand why) and that many people like Pandemic, which like 7 Wonders is a "Top 40" hit.

Those of us who have a little bit more elitist tastes tend to stay away from anything "Top 40" for various reasons. If anything, I like games with theme not because I'm immature, but because I'm elitist.

First one that came to mind. I'm not sure how the later editions did, but the insert in my first edition copy was worse than worthless. Add in the expansion and there's no possible way to keep the insert.

I found it fits just perfect, even with standard thickness sleeves on the cards. However, everything only fits one way, and I don't own the expansion, but it still fits perfectly.

Then you must not have a first edition copy. The insert looked like this:

My brother has 1st edition. He put the cards in those slots and carried the game to game day. He took it out and found the cards had went everywhere, and the board had creased two or three of them.

Luckily Z-Man shipped him replacements. But yeah, that insert was pretty poor. The worst kind, actually--it deceptively looked like it *would* work before savagely turning on you.

36 Pandemic vs. 13 El Grande

Second Round: d. Through the Ages: A Story of Civilization 631-611
First Round: d. Ora et Labora 702-349

Comment: Pandemic survived the largest upset of this round sending the first top seed of a sub-bracket home. TtA continues to be the shakiest of the in the upper echelon year after year, even with a last minute push that closed the gap. Which virus will win this next match-up? (And who will be the first to understand my lame, but obscure, reference?)

Can they be multiplayer? Yes. However honestly how many times have you played one without the same person making most of the decisions during the game.

Pretty much whenever we play. We often talk about moves among the players, but the person whose move it is always has the final say and always has multiple choices. Actually, the person whose move it is always has first say too since we only talk the move over if the player is having difficulty deciding!

This complaint is so overused. First of all, I rarely see this happen in the co-op games I play. Secondly, when it does happen, it's because people are still learning the game and ask for suggestions. That's called cooperation. Once they learn a bit of strategy, they start to make their own choices.

This exact same thing can (and does) happen in ANY board game. When a player is learning a new game they will often ask an experienced player for ideas on what to do early in the game. I just recently did this while playing Through the Ages. Another player gave me suggestions for what to do, and I chose what I thought was best. After a few turns, I didn't need to ask for help anymore. Yet, when this same thing happens in co-op games, it's talked about as a major con to the genre. I don't get it.

Furthermore, in competitive games, some people (they've been few among my groups) are helpful enough to keep your progress in the game from going "off-road", but when it comes to decisions that may affect them, they're all the sudden silent. Then there are cases where opponents are too helpful. In a way, competitive games also need to find their middle ground with helping other players (e.g. learn the game, not do something so horrendous as to get eliminated from the get-go, or give the game to another player) vs. leaving them be (e.g. seeing how a player's own observations and wits legitimately fare against not just you, the teacher, but also the other players).

If nothing else, there are 'merits' to such games...
--If someone has to leave soon, you can just control his character if there aren't any secrecy rules that need to be observed
--If someone just walked in, they can jump right in for an unused character being played by someone already controlling 1 or more other character
--Some people take games with any sort negative elements, backstabbing, or attacking fairly poorly, so co-op games can do the trick that otherwise no other genre of board game would.
