MATCH 16
Puerto Rico vs. Brass

Finally, a huge first round matchup; not just top 100 games, top 10! Puerto Rico barely snuck in, though it nearly got a second nomination from my list. Robin nominated Puerto Rico, with a placement value of 4.93.

Again, not really a Martin Wallace fan and though I don't hate Brass, PR is way more fun. Way, way, way more.

I am not sure PR deserves to be #2, 3, or whatever BGG ranking it is but it is a good game.

Oh yes, you and I will get along just fine

Although I adore both games here, I am going with Puerto Rico because it plays well with anybody. Brass is only really good with experienced players who know what they are doing, in part because there are so many nit-picky rules that newer players forget while they are playing (such as: how to get coal, how to get iron, how to manage your loans, when canals are necessary, where you can build canals, why you can't build a Level 1 tile during the rail phase, why you can't just build rails anywhere...). Puerto Rico is simply far more accessible, and just as deep.

I don't think it's quite as deep, but I do agree it's much more accessible. I think that's why I can't decide between them. They are both fun to play with Brass getting the edge in brain-burning and PR getting the edge in 2-player and accessibility.

Voting Puerto Rico for a sense of nostalgia. I'm not sure it's a better game than Brass though...
Neil makes a good point about how it's more accessible.

My thin skin is also making me vote for PR due to the consistent stompings I suffer at Brass

For 3rd Place

01 Twilight Struggle vs. 03 Puerto Rico (& Limited Anniversary Edition)

Fifth Round: lost to Agricola 593-545
Fourth Round: d. 7 Wonders 814-583
Third Round: d. War of the Ring (& Collector's Edition) 828-557
Second Round: d. Crokinole 833-378
First Round: d. Carcassonne * 819-617

Comment: PR seemed to have good momentum in its anniversary year. But Agricola once again closes the door to the championship bout.

I would love voting for TS. It's a great game. But in the end, it's a 3-4 hour long 2 player game, so I guess I have to vote for the more versatile one, which also happens to be a great game.

Puerto Rico is the game that got me into serious boardgaming, and dearest to many people here on the geek.
As good as Twilight Struggle is, it is quite lengthy, very heavy and absolutely is not for everybody.
I have to vote for Puerto Rico here.

Has anyone here not played Puerto Rico? Like it or not, it's a Euro/board game classic. I think that's pretty certain considering its longetivity at the top/near top of the BGG ranks.

But I didn't even know about BGG when I first played Puerto Rico. It's a role selection game wherein everyone is adding plantations to their player board to produce resources, building buildings to process and complete resource production and/or enhance their personal abilities, and getting worker to place and make those plantations/buildings actually work.

The ultimately goal is shipping off produced resources for VP, although the buildings you invest in with money are also worth VP themsleves (especially the end game 'prestige' type VP producing buildings). You can also sell resources in the market for money, though this can be sometimes difficult to do.

So the game is Euro Economic Engine building. You've got to get money and resources producing efficiently and fast to get them shipped for VP! The first time I played this game, I was blown away with how elegantly assembled the mechanics were. There is no 'luck' outside of whatever choices the other players make. And, at least IMO, all the roles one can select from each turn are all very useful and well designed. The whole thing just meshes nicely as though role selection and economic enging building were built for a game just like this.

There is no player interaction other than role selection, fitting goods in the marketplace, selecting from limited stocks of plantations/buildings available, and competing over space on the ships to send cargo back to Spain for VP.

I'm certainly in no rush to play PR myself as there are more games to try! But I like it. It's my personal favorite economic Euro that I've played. I'm usually up for a game when people are interested.

I played once online which isn't very fair since I didn't have a teacher, but still... maybe a d10-2 depending on my mood, but I'm very uninterested in actually trying this game out. There's too many other Euros out there that I'm more interested in, and I'm not really much of a zero-conflict guy anyway.

It's not really zero conflict the way we play. There's a decent bit of sabotaging other player's plans by taking what you think they want or putting useless resources on a ship just so they can't use it. Not a lot of conflict by any means, but some.

Just shortly after my journey had begun with Setlers and TTR, I decided that I wanted to know what was so great about the #1 game (at the time). I figured that if this guy can invest countless hours in putting one of these videos together, I sure as heck can sit down and watch one from beginning to end. I am glad I did. Thanks Scott!

This is the best 2-player game on BGG and it was also ripped off by San Juan, so clearly Summoner Wars Master Set ripped it off too!

Picking a Summoner is the same thing as role selection, right?

3er. Dog King won with 45 points. Guanin and I both had 40.

Guanin kept letting Dog King take corn. Dog King ended up with 5 corns, and won with a Large Wharf.

Guanin and I both went a builder strategy.

Hhhmmm, I think a game / band that doesn't strike strong opinions is middle of the road. These two seem to do quite the opposite.

Furthermore I think that an album like Discotheque is more innovative than middle of the road.

Btw I do agree with your high rating of Intrigue, I love that game

They don't distinguish because this particular Sally Ann can very fairly be described as a dump. yuk Literally. The room where they put games has a large trough and they just dump all of their bins into it.

However, Cadrian's finds will never cease to make me weep cry as I used to go to that SA frequently and never found so much as a sausage. But when I met Cadrian, he stuck me as a first-class fellow so I am pleased that these great games are going to him. meeple

When History of the World is my Ameritrash icon, then Puerto Rico is my Eurogame icon.

A great, nearly flawless design and an archetype for many Eurogames that followed.

Ravensburg edition.

Bought new and in great shape. But not in the original box. In a nice plastic Project Case clam shell.

Sweetner: All the expansions. Original buildings expansion and later nobles expansion.

02 Agricola vs. 03 Puerto Rico (& Limited Anniversary Edition)

Fourth Round: d. 7 Wonders 814-583
Third Round: d. War of the Ring (& Collector's Edition) 828-557
Second Round: d. Crokinole 833-378
First Round: d. Carcassonne * 819-617

Comment: 7 Wonders gets the small victory in preventing PR from taking the most votes again this round.

Puerto Rico or Agricola? Hum. I can't say if either deserve the effort to rise my thumb.

But, of the two, Puerto Rico appears to be the most innovative when it came out.

So, there. PR, then.

This is the tie where I honestly couldn't bring myself to vote, because I don't like EITHER of them. Instead I voted for Spacer 2.

Come on Puerto Rico fans! Agricola is not a better game.

Understatement will get you ... somewhere. Neither is a better game.

It sure is! If it's the only game you've ever played...

I'm a game collector. So I've played many games. And I agree with Hector. Puerto Rico is by far the best game ever.

You need to know how many people are playing in order to set up the colonists, victory points, and which ships to use.

I don't remember which geeklist, but somebody recently mentioned that they had their game organized like below:

One bag that contained the colonists for a 3p game

another (labeled) bag that contained the number of colonists added for a 4p game

A seperate bag to add for 5p

And the same system for VP chits.

This would greatly streamline setup and when packing up, you only need to count out the pieces for the 4p and 5p bags...

Late Saturday, The wind down for me. Believe it or not, I've only played this a few times, and my last was 3 years ago. My brain had melted during Eclipse, so this was a nice way to wind up.

Looking forward to seeing everyone next year.
