I went out and cut out a special table-top to put the maps on, sized and cut plexiglass to fit perfectly over the maps........and that's it. It's just such a monster game and I love monster games. Unfortunately, my game room space was taken over by my 3 and 5 year old girls. Don't know how the wife would take me leaving it set up in the living room for months on end. Maybe in retirement one day.

Ongoing solo game on my table. 3 Map Campaign game. Have not made a tremendous amount of progress due to playing live games of BfN on Vassal.
The following pics are at the end of the June 11 turn. Lessons learned from this solo play to apply to live opponent games:
1. Do not let the British establish a strong hold on the Orne River bridgehead. It is a huge headache for the Germans to try and contain the British east of the Orne. Poor defensive terrain, easy access to Caen from the east and a drain on manpower to defend.
2. Hold Bayeau as long as possible. Once Bayeau falls the Germans will have to pull back a significant distance to locate defenseable terrain.
3. Get a Corps HQ to the Contetin as fast as possible.
4. British need to push east and west of Caen, avoid direct assault from the north.
5. Allies can afford to attack at low odds and take the step losses that the Germans cannot afford.
Big picture view of 3 map campaign.
Caen and expanded Orne River bridgehead
British force their way into Bayeau while the Americans push south

I am close to calling this game an Allied victory and resetting. I am going to be playtesting the expansion for Dan Holte and have the new rules for the expansion. I want to play using the new rule set. It also appears that barring a miracle Caen is going to get isolated soon due to the disaster east of the Orne. I need to figure a way to get the other two maps on my table so I can play the game as it moves south. the new rules look very intersting and provide more detail and variety of options.

My favorite: Grand Tactical / Operational - WW II West Front - Easy/Medium
This game is smoking hot and don't let the size of this game scare you; it is like a cuddling, adorable baby elefant and very easy to handle. It's just big but that is all!! Please read the AAR of the campaign. The ultimate game for wargamers like me. WOW, Thanks Dan Holte!
Plus: -Accessibility: finally a VERY playable and accessible monster wargame! -I like the scale; the weaponary combined with the freedom of choice due to space gives a magnificant feel -Theme: best of the Western Front -System: very straight forward and some call it conservative; only few phases that one can think it can't be right for a monster game on this scale, certainly not with a game on Normandy with all it's odds & ends?!?! Well, Don manages to do what Craig Besique is notorious for: he manages to let you focus on strategy without getting you bogged down in procedures. -Excellent customer support by designer The different weaponary, HQ-, sea- and air rules combined with a varied landscape already take care of a lot of variables. It really takes courage and design intelligence to streamline such ambitious and detailed project. Most designers tend to 'over' design with additional process and phases to cover 'every' aspect. -Epic proportions but a teenager is able to play it! -High quality components -Otstanding reply value, provided you have some space.
Minus: -The odds for bad weather are tremendous and a huge advantage for the Germans. Play the historic weather first as it might become frustrating playing such intense and long campaign only to find out the you lost as Allied player because the weather sucked... -Some discrepencies in the OOB and counters but C3i volume 24 fixes this -There are few ambiguities in the rules and I hope 2nd editions rules that come with the expansion will fix this. -Mistakes in short term planning early on can ruine the whole campaign on the long run (especially true for the Germans, don't burn your Panzers too early). -Potential dangers: will the 'simple' system keep up interest over time? Time will tell. -Decent storage is a MUST!! Otherwise you will find yourself lost setting up the game.
What is not too like? This is kind of old-school hex & counter anno 2009 in a way that it only has few steps per turn which is very untyppical for a game of this size with all detail.
Here lies its strength but also it potential weakness; fast and straight forward play is a plus and time will tell if this is enough to keep the system interesting overtime.
As Allied player you have to use your CSP (combat supplly points carefully). If you burn to much too soon you run out of steam. Same is true for the German's; you have some excellent units that you can use to hit hard early. The danger is that you burn them and only find yourself out of Panzers when you really need them.
This game has it all and in very comprehensive and intuitive fassion which is a real good thing!
Clipping 2500 counters is a daunting task but for this game absolutely worth imo.

I might have three games of this going right now.
1. Solo game on my table. Night turn June 8th. I've rolled two consecutive turns of heavy rain, so it might end up a short solo game.
2. Solo game on Vassal. Night turn June 7th. Allies fairing better here than on the table.
3. Live game on Vassal. PM turn June 6th. Allied beaches are a mess.
I guess you could say I really like this game. The invasion turn is extremely well designed in my opinion. This is not a comlpicated game once you have the rules down.
I will be posting pictures of solo table play at some point.

Games Played:
18C2C (Coast to Coast) -- refresher session, called after the first mergers (third stock round) The Battle for Normandy -- Set up to play from scratch following a loss of venue. Luna -- first play TZAAR 2x -- first play Troyes -- by request, at the Le Havre/RFTG Friday night group Race for the Galaxy: The Brink of War3x -- because we always do that
For Normandy, we set up the game and did the initial paratrooper drops. I selected the Commonwealth forces again, and was hoping for Dave (the German player for that side of the map) and myself to play out more-or-less the same scenario with the benefit of added experience. Well, no. I rolled very different dice -- an entire paratrooper division died landing in swamps, and the lone paratrooper company that held Pegasus Bridge until the reinforcements got there? He drifted into a swamp and died also. Meanwhile, the Americans took minimal losses and drifted clear across the river that caused them so much trouble last time. I am going to be in trouble. However, for all that this game is so far out of my comfort zone as a gamer (hundreds of tiny decisions to make in a fog of probability) I can't stop thinking about it...
Luna... I want to play this again, understanding what I am doing from the beginning. This was the first play for everyone at the table, and it showed, as a lot of our meeples' time was wasted taking actions to do what we should have done the previous round. (The last round, someone had most of their meeples on the boat and no wave or ship tokens, so they just said they would take 4 candles, pressuring everyone else.)
After Luna, there were only 2 of us left, and I suggested TZAAR, which I had seen a game-of-the-month nomination for. The first game did not go well for me -- I built a lot of small stacks while Dave built monsters. He ate all 6 of my double-ring pieces for an easy win. Fortunately, we played again, and I was aggressive right from the start, setting up a lot of forking plays. He resigned after I sent a single blank piece to take out the dot piece in the shadow of his monster double-ring stack. (Each player starts out with 6 double-ring pieces, 9 dot pieces, and 15 blank pieces, on your move you must capture a stack of same or lower height on the hex-torus, and then either capture or grow a stack by landing it on top of one of your own.) At some point later, though, I played a game against an AI called DumbBot (unlogged) and got thoroughly beaten, though I claim that's because the UI made me misjudge the height of a stack at a crucial moment.
Troyes -- H. made amazing use of a combo I have not seen exploited before. He used the Diplomat to get cubes on four different cards, and then spent 18 coins on the first move of the next round to use the Captain (1 VP per card with a cube on it) to haul in 16 VP with one action. In the final score he was a close second, but we'll be talking about that one glorious move a lot longer than we remember who won. (This was a high-money low-Prestige game, where the attack cards kept building up because nobody had combos to make it effective to clear them. By the end of the game we were rolling 7 black dice, and losing 2 worker meeples a turn...)

Plays this past week:
Spades x3 Troyes x2 1846 x1 18Mex x2.2 RftG: BOW x1 (yes, really, only one hand) Attika 1x Villa Paletti x1 (cut short when someone accidentally snagged a column with the hook after succeeding at a delicate removal :-) ) Pandemic (with expansion roles and events but no other features) The Battle for Normandy (as previously discussed) Tier auf Tier x3 (on my own copy!) Cannonball Colony 1x (first play)
The 2.2 games of 18MEX is because we had a relatively inexperienced player who had not played 18xx in years, so we played 2 ORs to refresh him on the mechanics.
That's quite a lot of gaming considering what a horrid week I had at work; no wonder I didn't get much sleep.
