Played two games with Roland and one with Alex H.

Alex was just learning the game he got over 30 points which is pretty good for his first game and I was at 60.

Roland and I split in two close games. The first game I had an incredible synergy with green worlds and two 6 developments with bonuses for green worlds. The second game we both went shipping and he beat me by 1 point.

Robot beat me 40-something to 24.

But I actually broke this out and played it! I've been in such a rut lately (not as bad as the one last winter, but bad enough) and my lack of solitaire gaming has really bugged me.

After playing (multiplayer) Roll for the Galaxy twice and loving it, I figured I should get this one out again. The Reverend is an inspiration when it comes to this game.

And yeah, I really, really enjoyed this session. Despite my paltry number of points, I enjoyed trying to find combos in the cards. I actually chose the "Draw an extra 5 cards" Explore option multiple times, something that is the first sign of emerging from newbness in this game.

Oh, I loved the Robot's action for World 7. Flipping the "Robot=" symbol from Produce to Trade is such an unexpected bit of brilliant programming in an already awesome bit of programming.

I also made one rule error with putting down the third card, a military world. My starting world lets me put down a military brown world and I put down a white one. Whoops. Not that it helped me, with my ineptness at this game, playing it correctly (less options for me) would probably have improved my score!

Going to visit the in-laws for the weekend, this is coming with. I should bring only this just to force myself to play it more and improve (but I won't).

After playing this, I set up Snowdonia for a solo run and read the rules. Still sitting on the table, hope to get to it tonight! What's a good score for that game with the number 1 train?

*edit*
Btw, I printed out the RollFTG solo rules and our own Koinsky's redesign of the playmat. It looks great!

Played a game vs. the bot. I got totally creamed. I didn't end up finishing this one. I gave up when the bot had 11 cards in his tableau, which included a few 6 point cards. Oh yea, he had also collected most of the vp chips at that point too. I might have had 15 points.

I still enjoy playing this solo from time to time, even though I have never beat the bot.

Had another go at this one on Saturday morning. The robot had world number 6, meaning it focused on Trade. I felt that I was working my butt off, really pursuing good combos that were presenting themselves to me.

At game end, I....... lost, 54 to 37. However, I can't remember the last time I scored in the 30s with the robot. Clearly, I am improving!

Game's beginning to show me some love and I, in return. Really enjoying it nowadays.

I'm sorely tempted by the Space Roller sci fi dice Kickstarter campaign that's currently running. I love the Tron-like aesthetic of the dice. The problem is, I don't have many sci fi games that use standard dice...just Galaxy Trucker, really. So even if I had them, they wouldn't see much use.

That got me thinking about other sci fi games in my collection that include dice, and RftG called out to me to be played. It's been a while since I pulled it off the shelf, so it took a fair amount of time to refresh myself on how to set up the robot. Once I got through that, though, I could dive in.

Robot: Ancient Race (World 6)
Me: Alpha Centauri (World 2)

I got the 6-cost development New Galactic Order (points for military strength) in my starting hand, along with Drop Ships (+3 military) and Space Mercenaries (+1 military), so it seemed running with a military strategy would be my best bet. I made a lot of use of Explore +5 to grab any +military or military worlds I could find and colonized as quickly as possible.

Unfortunately, with all the developing and colonizing, the robot brought its tableau up to 12 while I was still at 11. To add insult to injury, its 12th card was Lost Alien Battle Fleet for 4 points (+3 military), which would have been worth 7 points for me. Together with a couple of 6-cost developments, that brought the robot up to a final score of 34, defeating my military empire of 29.

Edit: Bah, I only just now noticed that world was military, and the robot should have kept drawing to find a non-military world. It still would have won, though, even without those 4 points.

While I absolutely love this game, I still find it difficult to remember all the rules. In particular, I constantly forget to draw my bonus card after colonizing.

After my defeat yesterday, I decided to challenge the robot again. Perhaps this time the tide would turn in my favor. I elected to try a different strategy, rushing developments as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, the robot spent the first half of the game rolling production to get its engine maxed and then spent the second half consuming, ending the game by taking 23 of the VP chips (I managed to take 1).

Score: Robot 44 - Me 39

I was so close, and the game was so easy to reset, I opted to challenge one more time. For this game, I started with a 6-cost development giving points for windfall worlds, so I split my time between developing and colonizing, trying hard not to give the robot a chance to get a production engine running. Unfortunately, it was able to play enough 6-point developments to take the lead.

Score: Robot 43 - Me 34

In total, three different strategies resulting in three losses. It's a good thing robots don't cackle.

Rediscovered RFTG. It's always been highly ranked in my games but for some reason I hadn't played it in years. It used to be one of my favorite games but got left behind by games where the theme/storyline is more apparent.

So this weekend I played 2 games against the bot and 2 losses.
- 32 vs 36
- 39 vs 51

I have to say that this game is really fun but I miss the narrative when I play. It's perhaps because I am still trying to recall the rules or perhaps because the puzzle aspect keeps me so focused on the game play that I don't pay attention to the story line developing.

Yet, I am eager to play more but would love to find a SCIFI game with more story to it. Maybe my kickstarting High Frontier (3rd edition) will fix that?

Haven't played the game for quite a while now and I forgot how good it is! The solo expansion arrived yesterday and I just gave it a try.

Lots of reading during each phase but I think with a few more games under my belt it's easy to keep in mind what the robot does in each phase.

I had more cards in front of me than the robot but after a few rounds I found out that I played some stuff incorrect and stopped. Anyway that robot had more VPs than me.

thumbsup That robot is a very good opponent.
thumbsdown Haven't played this game for a while and I really need to change that.

See what I mean? They even scaled back on the expansions for the second game. Thanks guys!

In this game, Todd got a bunch of brown worlds plus a great big card that does fancy stuff with brown worlds. (Maybe a 6-dev of some sort?) Anyway, he just produced and consumed over and over, and we couldn't catch him.

The robot's view for a wee while

Welcome, O mighty Robot, to the continent from whence your name originates (robot is a Czech word isn't it?).

This entry is my part of the big fun that is the Solitaire Games around the World (SGatW). It's been far too long since I last played this great game and I had a lot of fun - compounded by the box marked with experiences from it's journey to me so far.

The 'Bot started with Damaged Alien Factory and us puny Humans were dealt Epsilon Eridani - this is all from memory now as the notes I kept are all in the box and on it's way to the next defender. The Bot grabbed a 6 chip fairly early but i just couldn't find a useful 6 development for love nor money and quickly decided to settle and settle fast. With some fortunate poor draws for the robot I just managed to squeak a victory - 27 to 32.

Files I used:

Ryanmobile's handy dandy score sheet was included in the box.

I also tried out the RTFG Scorer Photo App which I believe I was directed to by Mikolaj sometime ago. It actually worked really well but if you think I'm going to trust one robot to score another robot without checking...

Since the robot left defeated the weather has changed and we are currently bathed in glorious sunshine. A coincidence? I think not, not when you consider the name of the expansion.

My first submission to a SGoYT. I received Race for the Galaxy: The Gathering Storm as a Christmas gift this year, but as my wife does not like the base game, I'd only punched it, but had not yet taken the cards out of the shrink. I've been listening to the Low Player Count podcast, which has inspired me to try solo gaming.

After looking over the solo rules last night, I decided to jump in tonight. I was dealt the Ancient Race and the Robot got Earth's Lost Colony. After putting the Intersteller sound track on the stereo, I was solidly defeated by the Robot on easy mode. I will be back for more Robot, just you wait. Final score was 48-29.

Update 6/7/2015:
Tried the (easy) robot a second time yesterday. While the score was closer (43-31), I still didn't manage to defeat the robot. I did manage to keep him to 1 6 Development, which I think was an improvement.

I played a game of this last night using the copy sent to me as part of this rather than my own:

Solitaire Games around the World (SGatW)

It was a practice game in preparation for my proper game on Tuesday night.

I lost 21-31. The Robot's New (Sparta) defeated my Old (Earth).

I really enjoyed it. This remains one of my favourites and despite it's easy set up and shortish play time I don't play it enough.

Looking forward to the real game on Tuesday and taking part in this Game Around the World experience.

thumbsup The mechanics of this just really suit me. Hand management and multiple strategies just works. The theme is good although wafer thin. The game doesn't change for solo play either.

thumbsdown Sometimes the AI can get its consume power going overtime and it's good night Gracie.
thumbsdown The other expansions I have aren't really necessary and make shuffling the main deck a challenge.

Finally got round to posting one of my plays, and this week I've been playing Race for the Galaxy. It's one of those games that I'm happy playing over and over, notching up 20-30 solo plays since getting it at the UK games expo. Love the subtle differences in the robots behaviour depending on its starting world, and not finding it as fiddly to use as I was expecting.

This evening I was playing on easy, starting with Damaged Alien Factory, and the robot was Epsilon Eridani. EE is my favourite robot to go up against, and the one that I think feels most different to the others. Knowing that it's more likely to copy my actions, makes selecting my actions much more interesting I feel.

I managed to beat my own high score, with 52 points... but still lost 52-52 (robot won the tie-breaker 8-4). I was largely trying to avoid any action that would benefit the robot a lot (especially if it copied), which probably dragged the game out a bit longer, hence the higher scores. And I was lucky to get four 6-cost developments that worked okay together.

I made a trade the other week for Race for the Galaxy and its expansion The Gathering Storm and finally got it to the table over the past few days. This game sat a little longer than others before its first play because after looking at the rule book I felt overwhelmed with all the symbols and rules for the AI.
I am so glad I finally broke down and played it! The first game was slow going with lots of time spend referring to the rules book, but the 3 games I have played since have all picked up in speed. I am starting to pickup on all the different strategies possible to win. I am also starting to see that there are so many potential combos out there.
I would have to say this game is a San Juan killer for me and I love San Juan. I am not sure I will be able to convince my wife of that because she is not one for overly complicated games and I know she will consider this high on that list.

I broke this out because I haven't played this in a long time. I was able to defeat the AI on the normal setting with a score of 52 to 42. Overall I know I should play this more often, because when I do I'm absorbed into the gameplay, yet I don't play it often because I have too many other games to play. Perhaps that's a sign I need to do another purge?

Played against the robot: soundly whipped by what I consider to be some very unlucky die rolls. The robot's economy and credits were at max and in four of five rolls the consume face of the die reared its ugly head.

I wanted to play it a second time but the feeling that the dice were not on my side today put a stop to that. Though I played well its economic engine was unstoppable.

Have not played this in a good while, and was a little rusty on the rules. And it showed. Got absolutely hammered by the vicious cardboard slab. Lost 16 points to 44 (I think that's my lowest score ever!)
