I'm terrible at Race for the Galaxy. I don't know why I still play it, sometimes, as I lack the understanding necessary to do well at all. On the other hand, I don't exactly play it intensely, and if I did, I'd probably be able to beat other folks at the game. As it is, I usually score below 15-20 points.

The RFTG AI just doesn't let up. None of the bots are easier than the others. You need to understand each one, and the solo game manages to keep the "try to anticipate what your opponent will do, and then don't duplicate effort" aspect of the multiplayer game, and it's quite vital to doing well. As is "try to anticipate what your opponent needs, and don't give them that opportunity unless they can make as little use of it as possible."

Brilliant AI, lots of replayability even if you never get the other expansions. I currently have the other expansions separated out, as I kind of like the concept of them more than the implementation. But if I ever play the base game + Gathering Storm enough to get bored of the dozen home worlds (which is unlikely) I can access them as well, as they all have their own AIs too.

So, it seems I started 2016 pretty much as I ended up 2015. Loss to the bot:

World (who) Dev World VP Total
Old Earth (me) 13 8 11 32
New Sparta (AI) 21 3 18 42

I started with a few Rare Goods cards, so along with Old Earth, I thought I would try and get a couple of Produce Consumes in before the AI started to build its economy. However, that never really happened, and in the meantime, it got great draws and a 10VP 2X Consume to end the game.

Oh well.

Got beat by the robot a couple of times today.

First game was bad.

Second game was worse.

This game is so much fun. Even when it beats you this bad.

I was able to play a quick game of Race for the Galaxy while at my daughter's soccer practice. I forgot to bring something flat for me to play on, so I ended up popping up the back of my SUV and sitting in the cargo area and playing there! It wasn't the most comfortable, but it worked.

robot: 38
Me: 24

Yes, same story as always! robot

Oh, and speaking of my vehicle, I wanted to share something my wife made for me.

(I'm guessing this is an American thing, so for my non-American friends let me explain. A lot of people put vinyl stickers on the back of their car window that represents their family. They are usually called "Stick Figure Families" because they started as plain stick figures (ie two parents, three kids and a stick figure dog). Through time they've gotten more elaborate, with figures playing sports, or designed as Star Wars characters, or zombies, or cowboys - basically whatever you think represents you or your family. And of course, there is humorous retorts to the stick figure families...like "My stick figure family could beat up your stick figure family" or stickers showing "my pet stick figure dinosaur is eating your stick figure family". Anyway, this a long-winded way to basically describe a custom bumper sticker.)

For us, a board gaming family, what could fit better than a Meeple family!

Another day, another robot victory.

Even with my starting world of Old Earth, I tried an Alien strategy given my starting hand that included the Alien Rosetta Stone World and a 4-cost Alien world. It worked okay, and I found a lot of Alien cards through multiple Explore actions, but I ended up with very few Consume worlds for VP production. The robot had Epsilon Eridani with a military strategy, and I was somewhat successful minimizing the number of worlds they were able to put into play, but my slow burning Alien strategy eventually gave the robot enough time to get both 6-cost counters and a bunch of cards into its tableau (I know, I know...it's a race!). The 6-development Alien card didn't end up in my hand until the last turn, so I never had a chance to play that. I'm not sure it really would have closed the gap, but it would have gone a long way.

Final Score:
robot: 65
Me: 40

"Storm over Ryloth"

Now that's the good Clone Wars I know.

Hmmm, Ahsoka not following orders. Ahsoka ramming her squad into a military choke point and losing them all even after being warned it was a trap. Where oh where she could have learned such behavior from. Hmmmmmmm.

Surprisingly, this bit of dialog is started by Ahsoka, not Anakin.

“You’re evacuating the Defender.”

“Yes! That way I can pilot it into the commanding ship and the only one at risk will be me!”

“You can’t! You’ll die!”

“No I won’t! My survival will completely depend on you.”

No pressure. Fortunately every one on the "good" side survives this second go.

Time to see what happens when the ground assault starts.

RESULT: Robot won 53-19
MY RECORD IN THIS GAME: 0-1

Fate was not my friend today. The robot got trade or x2 just about every time, and also got a bunch of high scoring worlds and developments. It's been a while since I played this one, and I have beaten it before. Just not today. A heck of a way to kick off the 10x10 challenge, I must say.

GAME #10
Race for the Galaxy: The Gathering Storm

ME: Damaged Alien Factory
ROBOT: Ancient Race
DIFFICULTY: Easy
RESULT: Viictory! 43-29
MY RECORD IN THIS GAME: 1-1
MY OVERALL RECORD: 5-5

Much better than my first game. This time, I concentrated on worlds and tried to avoid developments, at least until the Robot got a 6-cost development. Which he did, but not until halfway through. He also got Trade just about every single time, but his ___ was stuck at 0 for quite a few turns, which was helpful to me. When he finally did start producing points, I already had a nice engine going. I also got lucky that his final tableau didn't have any cards worth more than 2 points.

A couple of firsts to note here. First, this was the first week that I had repeat games, and it turned out to be a reverse of my first week. Also, this is the first week where I won both games. This got me back to .500 on the year.

Victory dance time!

Comments:
Like the normal game this is very much a race and not a direct competition. Probably the best part of this solo variant is that different start worlds play pretty differently with somewhat varying difficulty, and you have to adjust your strategy accordingly.

The different phases don't translate exactly perfectly. Explore seems much more powerful than with other players as the robot doesn't get much benefit from it, while produce is really risky because it can potentially give the robot nothing or a large benefit if it copies you. I dislike that it is possible for the robot to spam consumptions without needing to produce first, since if you get a few unlucky x2 rolls you are probably doomed. The VPs gained by the robots from Develop and Settle can also be really swingy, and you are bit disincentivized to Develop in the harder modes because it is the only thing that scales when you increase the difficulty. However, due to the need of consideration for what the robot can/will probably it really retains the parasitic feel of the multiplayer game, and with the different levels of difficulty and different play styles of each start world this is a highly addicting variant that will keep you busy for some time.

Soloable with the Gathering Storm expansion.

--

Feb 4

Race for the Galaxy has lost none of its potency, and I'm still pretty bad at playing against the bots!

I do want to play this more often, but I think I may spend more of my time on Sentinels of the Multiverse. I'm not sure yet, but I don't think I have the time to sharpen my swords for Race for the Galaxy. Light sabers. Whatever.

Such a beautiful game, such a wonderful AI, and such variety in its expansions means that it's not leaving my collection any time soon, though. Maybe I'll find more time for it.

From out of the space dust and onto my table... well, I put it on the table, and it was in need of an insert, so instead of playing I made a foamcore insert - I guess that counts for something.

It's been a really difficult week or so with little to no time to get games to the table - in fact I think this will be the case for the next several weeks (traveling to Germany, try to get my Christmas shopping done, etc.) although I may stowaway a few small games for the hotel room.

I've resorted to playing video games in the past few weeks because it takes 30 seconds to turn on, a second to save, and easy to put away. I looked at my shelves of games and nothing really made me want to play it, which is quite sad considering the collection that I have. Not sure if it's just burnout or what, but I'm hoping that will pass soon enough so I can find the excitement and joy in the board games again.

So I ended up playing this tonight. One of my top 20 solo games. I got world 9 and the AI was playing world 8. The race was really right tonight and unlike many other starting worlds for the AI, I thought this one was really challenging because you don't want them to take advantage of the settle phase. I did manage to prevent the AI from getting any 6 point tokens during the development phase because they never had enough credits.

Despite this, I lost 42 to 41. So close.

So, a couple of months ago, I had a triple points coupon for my FLGS. Not wanting to waste it, I got Freedom:The Underground Railroad, Cruel Necessity and Race for the Galaxy. The only issue was that they didn't have The Gathering Storm. Oh well, I thought, I'll be able to get it soon.

3 months later, and they still hadn't got it in stock. I was starting to think it was OOP, so I asked, and they said no problem, they would order it in (along with D-Day at Peleliu, which I was also after). Picking it up now gave me no excuse and I had to learn it. After watching Ricky Royal's video run through, and giving the rule books the once over, I gave it a try.

And that's when I froze. I knew the iconography was supposed to be difficult to grasp, but even though I thought I understood the gameplay, if not the strategy, I felt like I didn't really. But I pushed on through, and in fact, I feel fairly confident that I did it all correctly. In the end, I won 43-40 against Easy. Not bad, I suppose.

This game reminds me of the advantage I have over some, only playing games for the past year or so, as I am not burned out yet with some of the older, but good titles. RftG is brand new to me, and I think I'll quite like it. I'll probably give it another stab at Easy level tomorrow.

Update I

Crikey, maybe the first game was a fluke. Earth's Lost Colony (me) just got hammered by New Sparta (AI) 41-24. Not sure what went wrong, as again, I think I got all the rules right. It just seemed to draw so many Military Worlds so fast in each settle, never getting close to running out of its stack pile. Just in case I did unwittingly do something wrong, are there any common mistakes players make in the rules for solo play?

Update II

OK, so I clearly lucked out in the first game. This time it was Separatist Colony (me) vs Doomed World (AI). I had a pretty good run with Military, starting at +1, and being able to add Drop Ships quickly. My last addition was New Galactic Order (+8). But a lack of VP chips killed me, as the AI got 28 VP chips. Final score was 46-20, another big loss on Easy.

Update III

OK, now I start to think this game may be a little luck dependent. Damaged Alien Factory (me) beat Separatist Colony (AI) 37-25, but I feel it was more due to missed opportunities than skill. The Home Colony power gave me plenty of cards to play around with early on, and later, I switched to using it for Diversified Economy, which I would double for 6VP. The AI kept running out of cards, missing chances to hit Military Worlds, so stalled out at just 7 cards and 6VP.

Thanks,

Colin

Well, that didn't take long. 7 games in, and I officially hate the robot.

Doomed World (me) vs New Sparta (AI) is a combo I hadn't played yet. But things started great. The bot rolled Produce twice in the first 2 rounds, which I was pleased with. Oh, how wrong was I? Very, that's how. It stole 24VPs in the last rounds by rolling 2X 3 times in a row!

On top of that, it was looking to Settle a Military World, 2 cards in it's stack, gets Rebel Underground for 4VP. Turn after, it follows a Develop, has 1 credit, so I thought "great, it'll waste that on a bad card". Nope, draws Galactic Federation for 6VP! Urgh. Lost 52-29! And I was doing so well.

So, yes, I hate it. But I love it. But I hate it.

Let's set up for game #8.

Colin

Expands: Race for the Galaxy

Some of the other expansions I can take them or leave them; I am looking at you Rebel vs. Imperium. This expansion, however, adds the secondary goals (that I sometimes play and sometimes leave out), new starting worlds that I always include (we tend to deal one out randomly), and many new worlds and developments, that are often "better" but rarely broken. It never gets taken out of the mix.

Hours: 193 (#1)

Favorite Card: Terraforming Guild

Yes that is many hours of Race, I was quite bored over last summer and the Robot solo variant was quite addicting. I was playing a two player game with my roommate who generally destroys me in board games, but in this play I was keeping pace with him. We finished the game and counted up our points: dang it, I had lost by 1 point. That was when I realized I had failed to blow up my Doomed World, which gives -1 point, but allows me to play a world for free. In fact, there was a settle in the last phase that I hadn't taken advantage of, and I did have a legal card in my hand that gave me VPs. Whoops.
