See what I mean? They even scaled back on the expansions for the second game. Thanks guys!

In this game, Todd got a bunch of brown worlds plus a great big card that does fancy stuff with brown worlds. (Maybe a 6-dev of some sort?) Anyway, he just produced and consumed over and over, and we couldn't catch him.

The robot's view for a wee while

Welcome, O mighty Robot, to the continent from whence your name originates (robot is a Czech word isn't it?).

This entry is my part of the big fun that is the Solitaire Games around the World (SGatW). It's been far too long since I last played this great game and I had a lot of fun - compounded by the box marked with experiences from it's journey to me so far.

The 'Bot started with Damaged Alien Factory and us puny Humans were dealt Epsilon Eridani - this is all from memory now as the notes I kept are all in the box and on it's way to the next defender. The Bot grabbed a 6 chip fairly early but i just couldn't find a useful 6 development for love nor money and quickly decided to settle and settle fast. With some fortunate poor draws for the robot I just managed to squeak a victory - 27 to 32.

Files I used:

Ryanmobile's handy dandy score sheet was included in the box.

I also tried out the RTFG Scorer Photo App which I believe I was directed to by Mikolaj sometime ago. It actually worked really well but if you think I'm going to trust one robot to score another robot without checking...

Since the robot left defeated the weather has changed and we are currently bathed in glorious sunshine. A coincidence? I think not, not when you consider the name of the expansion.

My first submission to a SGoYT. I received Race for the Galaxy: The Gathering Storm as a Christmas gift this year, but as my wife does not like the base game, I'd only punched it, but had not yet taken the cards out of the shrink. I've been listening to the Low Player Count podcast, which has inspired me to try solo gaming.

After looking over the solo rules last night, I decided to jump in tonight. I was dealt the Ancient Race and the Robot got Earth's Lost Colony. After putting the Intersteller sound track on the stereo, I was solidly defeated by the Robot on easy mode. I will be back for more Robot, just you wait. Final score was 48-29.

Update 6/7/2015:
Tried the (easy) robot a second time yesterday. While the score was closer (43-31), I still didn't manage to defeat the robot. I did manage to keep him to 1 6 Development, which I think was an improvement.

I played a game of this last night using the copy sent to me as part of this rather than my own:

Solitaire Games around the World (SGatW)

It was a practice game in preparation for my proper game on Tuesday night.

I lost 21-31. The Robot's New (Sparta) defeated my Old (Earth).

I really enjoyed it. This remains one of my favourites and despite it's easy set up and shortish play time I don't play it enough.

Looking forward to the real game on Tuesday and taking part in this Game Around the World experience.

thumbsup The mechanics of this just really suit me. Hand management and multiple strategies just works. The theme is good although wafer thin. The game doesn't change for solo play either.

thumbsdown Sometimes the AI can get its consume power going overtime and it's good night Gracie.
thumbsdown The other expansions I have aren't really necessary and make shuffling the main deck a challenge.

Finally got round to posting one of my plays, and this week I've been playing Race for the Galaxy. It's one of those games that I'm happy playing over and over, notching up 20-30 solo plays since getting it at the UK games expo. Love the subtle differences in the robots behaviour depending on its starting world, and not finding it as fiddly to use as I was expecting.

This evening I was playing on easy, starting with Damaged Alien Factory, and the robot was Epsilon Eridani. EE is my favourite robot to go up against, and the one that I think feels most different to the others. Knowing that it's more likely to copy my actions, makes selecting my actions much more interesting I feel.

I managed to beat my own high score, with 52 points... but still lost 52-52 (robot won the tie-breaker 8-4). I was largely trying to avoid any action that would benefit the robot a lot (especially if it copied), which probably dragged the game out a bit longer, hence the higher scores. And I was lucky to get four 6-cost developments that worked okay together.

I made a trade the other week for Race for the Galaxy and its expansion The Gathering Storm and finally got it to the table over the past few days. This game sat a little longer than others before its first play because after looking at the rule book I felt overwhelmed with all the symbols and rules for the AI.
I am so glad I finally broke down and played it! The first game was slow going with lots of time spend referring to the rules book, but the 3 games I have played since have all picked up in speed. I am starting to pickup on all the different strategies possible to win. I am also starting to see that there are so many potential combos out there.
I would have to say this game is a San Juan killer for me and I love San Juan. I am not sure I will be able to convince my wife of that because she is not one for overly complicated games and I know she will consider this high on that list.

I broke this out because I haven't played this in a long time. I was able to defeat the AI on the normal setting with a score of 52 to 42. Overall I know I should play this more often, because when I do I'm absorbed into the gameplay, yet I don't play it often because I have too many other games to play. Perhaps that's a sign I need to do another purge?

Played against the robot: soundly whipped by what I consider to be some very unlucky die rolls. The robot's economy and credits were at max and in four of five rolls the consume face of the die reared its ugly head.

I wanted to play it a second time but the feeling that the dice were not on my side today put a stop to that. Though I played well its economic engine was unstoppable.

Though I lost to the robot 67 - 35, I still had a lot of fun.

I was doing well until the halfway point when the robot's economy started to ramp up and the bloody x2 side of the dice make a few unwelcome appearances. Seriously, it gave the robot 20 points in two successive turns - that's nigh on impossible to counter, especially when it brings about a sudden end of game.

ROBOT - GAME OVER IN TWO ROUNDS, HUMAN.

ME - What do you mean?

ROBOT - READ THE DICE AND WEEP, MORTAL.

Me - My day will come, Robot. Oh yes it will.

ROBOT - GO LEAK SOME EYE FLUID AND TELL YOUR SISSY COMPATRIOTS ON BGG. I'VE BEATEN THEM ALL AS IF THEY OWED ME MONEY. HA! HA! HA!

Is this true, fellow SGOYT posters?

Is the robot that good?

REVENGE IS MINE!!

After having my proverbial ass handed to me on a plate earlier today, I found myself unable to completely shake off the feeling that I needed to show the bot some manners. The day went by quite nicely for me, but I couldn't shake the feeling that I could do so much better if I really concentrated (call it the Make Knight feeling). At nine I told Michelle I was going to go into the kitchen and give The Gathering Storm another go. She seemed happy for genuinely happy for me (keeps me off the internet, I suppose). To the kitchen I went. The game boxes were removed from the shelves, everything was removed from the boxes, and I was ready to play ... or so I thought. Why do I have only one marker for my player actions?

Arrgh! The OCD part of me started knifing internally. Gotta find it! Gotta find that missing piece! And if any of the ladies are reading let me tell you that I did ask my lovely wife http://www.boardgamegeek.com/user/shell42970 to help me look for it. Do I hear snickering in the background?

Anyway, the piece was found nestling comfortably between two cards still in the box: catastrophe averted. On to the game.

I won! I clobbered the bot! It took me an hour of play to get the justified result I-did-not-know-at-the-time I needed. The robot collected 32, moi collected 68.

My neck is craned high as I type this some minutes after telling Michelle that tonight I became a man.

Undoubtedly my constant talking out loud to myself as I played focused my attention, though I did misplay one round quite badly. Overall, a great way to end the night.

Would you like to sea a photograph of my victory?

*Tumbleweed* *Crickets chirping*

Too bad! Here it is.

p.s. Replicant Robots ROCK!!

Tried to beat the robot on medium tonight. The robot let me know that I wasn't quite ready. After four rounds I was trailing 15 - 2; those two six points development chits were painfully sitting on its home world card way too soon. Though I tried to claw my way back it kept on drawing the military world it needed; first a five point world, then a six point world, finally the seven point world! At three separate points in the game it stack of cards was empty, but the draw was maniacally unfavourable to me. In four rounds it amassed a further 18 points with military worlds alone. Aye yi yi! Nothing lost but valour. Still having a great time with game. The final score was 43 - 29.

Pulled this one out for a quick game, but it dragged out in a battle between me and the robot. I drew New Sparta as my opening world so I thought I'd avoid consume and produce to concentrate on placing military worlds. I did a bit of deck searching and pulled out galactic imperium and the rebel homeworld which was handy. The robot was also working steadily along. The last card I managed to play was new galactic order which gave me a 22 point bonus. However the robot pulled out a x2 and ended up getting a win 54-49! shake

Keeping the chain going?

Played on hard, and the robot spanked me! 53 - 22. He got a 9-point chip first turn, and he had all those freaking 6-devs in his hand. I had Ancient Race, and did pretty well with getting a Produce/Consume engine going, but by that time his economy size was maxed out.

Oh well, gonna keep trying.

Did you ever play a game and wonder where you went wrong? I just did, and lost by the whopping score of 59 - 29. Unable to shake the feeling that I should have played more aggressively, I allowed the bot to dictate the pace of the game. In essence, I only reacted to what the bot was doing and didn't focus on what I should have been doing. Oh well! This spanking will have to be chalked up as a learning experience.

I lost by a twenty point margin. Once the bot gets it economy going a part of me knows I am about to be steamrolled. And after I scraped myself up and counted the scores - a twenty point margin of victory to the bot - the game was put away without too much ceremony from me. I may need to break out Mage Knight soon.
