In this game you travel state to state trying to earn votes in each state. It was a real good game for its time.

I played 2 games with about 5 years of dust in July. The first was Campaign Trail, a roll and move game about the US primary elections. I first played it at Bruce Linsey's house in the summer of 1989 (25 years ago,) before I started recording plays, and this latest game was also with Bruce, at our house.

Bruce made up some variant rules that we always use (they're posted on BGG.)

The second was Cities a game somewhat like Take it Easy!. It could be played with 100 people if you had enough copies. It's a bit like Bingo in that one person randomly draws a tile and calls out its number, and everyone finds that tile in their set and places it. However, the placing involves decisions, making it a better game than Bingo. I always wonder whether I'll like this when it's asked for, but I always like it when I play it.

This is absolutely a "roll and move" game, but it's strangely engrossing. We played a 6-player game in which Bruce Linsey (whose modifications we used in the game---see his posts to the game page) was next to last in every showdown but won the game.

This game might not immediately come to mind when area control games are discussed, but to me it's clearly a member of the category (and in fact many US election games fall into the group, given the way our electoral college system works. People talk about area control as though it were an artificial construct created by game designers, but the founders of our country came up with it more than 200 years ago!)

What makes this game work is that you have some control over which states you will gain support in, and interesting decisions about how to exercise that control, but you don't have full control, which would take the fun out of the game.

I usually use Bruce Linsey's variant that lets you double your Presidential candidate's support if you roll doubles rather than taking an event card.

Bobby was asked to bring one game--Campaign Trail. He and a bunch of others (Ray, Jim Vroom, Bruce Reiff) usually play this whenever they get together. But that whole tournament thing going on in the other rooms kept them from ever having the opportunity.

So, at 7:52, Ray, Roger, Bobby, and I sat down for a frenetic election cycle. Bill was probably sleeping at this time, to rest up for late night werewolf, plus he doesn't like the way we play (you can roll ahead of your turn to consider your move, and everyone has their own dice, so it's fast paced).

After the timer went off 90 minutes later, we started tallying. Roger was out in the first round, having only 74.5 electoral votes. When his votes were doled out, Bobby's 148 electoral votes were at the bottom. At this point, I was still ahead, so in my mind I won the popular vote. But after dealing with Bobby's states (places I didn't visit), I had only 222 to Ray's 302. That doesn't exactly add up, but it's close enough. The tally ended at 9:47.

The best election game I have ever played by far. The gameplay is deceptively simple yet deep. Similar to a real campaign, you have to start with an overall strategic plan, then adapt to changing conditions and events. The endgame is incredibly tense, perhaps the best of any game I have played. Scales well for any # of players and is especially intriguing for four to six players. An underrated classic.

Started Friday night off with a Newt Gingrich memorial game of Campaign Trail with my club. I made it to the third ticket before dropping. It is the farthest I have ever got in the game. I love playing it.

The rest of the weekend I spent with my wife, quality time playing Zooloretto and Aquaretto 2 player.I love both of those games as well.

Several editions of this particular game exist (note the 'Jimmy Carter' cover in the example photo.)

Described somewhat humorously as follows:

"Campaign Trail allows players the opportunity to campaign through the length and breadth of the USA, returning, as necessary, to those areas which may need an additional pep talk (and further funding).

Unlike other American election games, Campaign Trail has a cheery luck factor which does seem an accurate reflection of the largest circus in the world. The chances of moving from state to state and finding your schedule in good shape are as likely as a succinct observation from Neil Kinnock."

And now we get down to games I rate 7.5 or below. I had many options, but selected this one as my 20th game on the list simply because a) it's a lot of fun, b) it's an election game, and c) it's old. How can you go wrong with this game?

Some of my favorite gaming experiences involve games I didn't even play in! I've just mentioned Rails of New England above. Another highlight was watching the end of a game of Campaign Trail that was about as close as a game of Campaign Trail can get. If you've ever played, you're probably familiar with the knock-down, drag-out, in-your-face fights players can get into over a state, often far past the point where the electoral votes they gain are worth the expenditure of resources.

In this game, Bruce Reiff and Ken Gutermuth went head-to-head over Ohio. You probably know that Ohio is Bruce's home state (no, despite the shirts, he does not come from Hawaii!) and he didn't want to let Ken take it. When they counted the votes, though, Ken edged him out by a margin of 178-177. Despite this blow Bruce knocked Ken out to go into the 2-man final showdown against Ray Pfeiffer, where he lost by a margin of 279-259. You won't see many games as close as that.

Campaign Trail is a severely underrated game, my favorite election game (yes, even over Die Macher and 1960). For being essentially roll-and-move, it is surprisingly thematic, forcing you to choose where to best spend your time. You have to constantly watch your opponents, and table talk is required. Do I need to come back to Ohio again? The event cards are a minor complaint, as a player can really get hosed by bad luck with the cards, but I have seen good play outweigh card luck. You must play quickly, at pretty much Dominion speed, with only 15 - 20 seconds between turns. Especially with the election this year, we had a lot of fun with this game. If only Bob Barr had been as lucky in the real election as he was in our games.

Campaign Trail is hard to find but worth finding. When you play the game you can see why presidential candidates don't spend any time in most of the states within the middle of the country. Most players spend the majority of the timed game jumping in-and-out of electoral vote-rich states like California, New York, Florida, and Ohio. The game needs to be revised for the updated electoral votes for each state.

I have a copy of this game somewhere. A nice game of electing the president. Each player has pawns for the president, vice, president, and another campaigner. The candidates move around the map campaigning for votes. Random events shake things up. The map needs to be updated since its based on the 1980 census I think.

Tis the season in the US. I once tried to collect just about all the Election games. Many of them have long passed the threshhold of 200 BGG owners, so they're not on this list. But these three games are worthwhile.

Free Choice (5)
Campaign Trail (66)
Koalition (173)

Campaign Trail is the best of the lot, but Free Choice is an interesting roll-and-move-and-collect-states design from, of all places, Canada. Koalition is barely on the list (6.5 rating) as it does drag and falls prey to the "who can talk loudest" syndrome of many "negotiation" games.
