Honorable mention because it scratched some of the MtG itch. You can create some nifty engines but they aren't super exciting. You might get something that lets you buy 2 provinces a turn instead of 1 or go through your whole deck. But it doesn't really branch out from there.

$5.00 - Goodwill Huntsville

I never find anything at this gw so you can imagine my surprise when i walked in to find this in the front case right inside the door. I had to hunt someone down to get it for me while my wife guarded it. I opened it and everything was in good shape (looks like it was looked at but never played)but looked like the Throne Room cards were missing, its ok i could do without them. My wife looked though the box on the way home and someone had stuck the Throne Room cards in the in the Gold pile. Super excited.

My wife still on vacation means the cat (me) will continue to play, as I use this week to visit the FLGS several times.

Tuesday

My first visit to the FLGS for the week had me catch Lin and Marie manning the store.

Alhambra = 1 Play (NEW)

I took the opportunity to bring out my newly acquired second hand copy of this SdJ winner. It’s highly possible that the newer Airlines Europe got some inspiration from the scoring mechanic of this game as this title also gives you points for having the most placed tiles of each color. The tile laying aspect is for you to try to build the longest continuous outer wall as each wall section gives you a point during each of the 3 scoring rounds. The game is also one of efficiency as you are rewarded by getting an extra action if you manage to purchase a tile with the exact value needed, so you also have to decide to either buy a tile and not get change or spend the time to get money with the hope that you have the exact values for getting tiles.

Lin took the lead by the end of the 2nd scoring since she had a 15 long wall by then. Periods of the game had each of us get multiples actions during turns due to exact change, but the placement and color of tiles you went for were the key points. This came into play by the 3rd scoring since by that time I had managed to build a 20 section wall while Lin got stuck at 15. Marie never really got going with the wall sections since she really didn’t get the value of long walls until the game was over. I also managed to dominate a few of the more expensive colors and this meant I managed to overtake Lin for the win in the end.

Me (yellow) 121 Lin (blue) 116 Marie (red) 90

Dominion = 1 Play

Both girls had never played this mother of all deckbuilders before so I took the time to teach them using the Frist Game scenario of the base set. They soon got the flow of the game and both enjoyed it a lot even though I just managed to edge out Marie for the win by point as I got 46 to her 45 and Lin’s 32 after we counted the scores.

Thursday

I visit the FLGS again and catch Lin together with Vangie and Julie.

Dominion = 2 Plays

This time I use the randomizer app on my phone to generate the cards for the games, as we play 2 games straight.

Game 1: The randomized cards. I wipe the floor this time with a dominating win while we wait for Vangie to show up! Me 48 Lin 34 Julie 33

Game 2: The randomized cards.

Game 2: The girls enjoyed the game as Julie wins. Julie 42 Vangie 34 Me 32 Lin 26

Airlines Europe = 1 Play

The play of Alhambra earlier this week inspired me to bring this out after a long period of inactivity. This game was different as it was only the green who got the bonus income from a completed route. The competition for Air Abacus was also VERY fierce and it was finally me who got the upper hand as I had managed to play 6 shares versus Vangie and Julie’s 5 each and 4 from Lin. The resulting 16 points during the 3rd scoring proved to be the game winner as I sprint ahead for the win.

Me (1st) 76 Vangie 64 Lin 64 Julie 61

Splendor = 1 Plays

This engine building game closed the afternoon, as we use the store copy. My focus on the tier 2 and 3 cards after I setup some cards for each color enabled me to complete the high value cards in the end which made me overtake the rest who each had managed to attract a personality, as I finish a 4 point card to leapfrog over Lin and finish the game at 15.

Me 15 Lin 14 Julie (1st) 12 Vangie 11

My wife would be coming back Friday evening so I try to take the opportunity for gaming in the house with Erwin and Javi answering the call.

Forbidden Stars = 1 Play

Javi had mentioned the previous week that he wanted to learn how to play this so I obliged and taught them both how to play, but not after both had watched a video instructional I recommended from BGG. I created the map using the recommended 3P setup in the rules to speed up things and let the guys select their factions. Erwin picked the Ultramarines while Javi selected the Chaotic World Eaters which left me with the Orks. The early part had all of us colonize and build up the systems right around the starting worlds. Erwin “got” the flow of the game earlier as Javi made some rookie command mistakes, and the early combats were good for teaching both the mechanics of this most important aspect of the game. Javi also lost out in this aspect several times as he was a bit slow to upgrade his combat deck and those upgrades can go a long way in swinging a combat in your favour. My experience in the game gave me the materia advantage as I went for the money producing worlds and my upgrade of “We’re Fasta” as well as conquered factories and cities meant that I was pumping out higher level units and sweeping the opposition out of the way. Erwin though was wisely using the warp storms to isolate his systems from me and he was able to focus his efforts in interdicting Javi’s efforts to attack him through a serious of pre-emptive attacks against Javi’s ships and planets where Javi was supposed to launch his attacks from. The game ended in Round 7 as Erwin had to leave in order to pick up someone. By that time all of us had managed to capture 2 objectives each but I had the lion’s share of controlled worlds for the win.

The game ended prematurely after round 7 with my green tide of Orks dominating almost 2/3rd of map! Me (Orks 2 objectives 12 worlds) Erwin (Space Marines 2 objectives 5 worlds) Javi (Chaos Space Marines 2 objectives 4 worlds).

Friday

I visited the FLGS in the afternoon again, with Erwin joining as well for games with Vangie and Marie (Julie was too busy manning the store to join completely).

Tales & Games: The Hare & the Tortoise = 2 Plays

2 games of this hand management filler of a racing game were played, with Erwin and Marie trying it out for the first time.

Game 1: A full 5P game was put into jeopardy as after a single round Julie was forced to tap out in order to man the store, but Attorney Mark leaped in to take over her hand. The game was a first in a way as it was the first time I saw both Canines (the Wolf and Fox) tied for first place through smart play of the Howl cards. The sheep was second while the tortoise was 3rd and the hare surprisingly did not place at. Marie then revealed her hand for a grand slam 10 points as she had both canines as her bets! Marie (Fox/Wolf 10) Me (Sheep/Fox 8) Erwin (Wolf/Tortoise 7) Vangie (Hare/Sheep 3) Mark&Julie (Tortoise/Hare 2)

Game 2: This time it was a 3P game with just Erwin, myself and Vangie. This time I make sure to hold hare cards every turn to ensure that he gets to move unless a howl card was used. The tortoise also managed to sprint a couple of times in this game when 4 of his cards were played. It was a complete opposite from the first game since it was the Hare who was first, the Tortoise 2nd and the Sheep 3rd and both Canines failed to place. I win this time as both of the animals in the game title were my bets.

Me (Tortoise/Hare 8) Vangie (Sheep/Tortoise 5) Erwin (Fox/Hare 5)

Puerto Rico = 1 Play

Vangie had requested this game the previous day so I obliged her by bringing it with me. This was Erwin’s first play of the game although I did teach him how to play San Juan before. The Small Market, Construction hut, and Factory were critical for me in getting 3 quarries as well as having the money to buy 2 of the 10 cost buildings as well as the Harbor which I take advantage often by selecting the Captain several times. The end game saw me run away with the win as I dominate all aspects of scoring.

Me 56 (Bldgs 21 VP 24 Bonus 11) Erwin 32 (Bldgs 19 VP 13) Vangie 29 (Bldgs 18 VP 6 Bonus 5)

Medieval Academy = 1 Play

This gateway level drafting game was next. It was Erwin and Vangie’s first try of this but this is really easy to learn and play. I still decided to use the B sides of the Jousting boards since I think it makes the game more interesting and the variant isn’t really complicated. I fail to compete in the Princess board in the first round which led me to get a -3 penalty, and this became a theme throughout the game as me (and later Vangie) continue to get hit with negative scores even as we score a lot of positives as well. In the end it was the one who got the least minuses (Erwin with just a measly -1) who won as large negative scores for both me and Vangie offset our high positive scores.

Erwin only got a penalty of 1 point which was the key to his success! Erwin 36 (37-1) Vangie 27 (48-21) Me 27 (40-13) Marie 16 (21-5)

Saturday

I would be flying to Vietnam that evening and try to get in an afternoon of gaming. Only Kent was available so we settle on several duels that afternoon in my house.

BattleLore (Second Edition) = 1 Play

MY order for all the expansion packs for this had finally arrived and with only Kent available it was the perfect opportunity to try them out. Kent selected the Daqan and this meant he could try some units from the BattleLore (Second Edition): Hernfar Guardians Army Pack expansion while I get to try out the Undead for the first time using the BattleLore (Second Edition): Heralds of Dreadfall Army Pack and BattleLore (Second Edition): Terrors of the Mists Army Pack sets. Kent selected the Iron Volley scenario which not only gave him the first turn but also gave him VPs if he destroys my units via missile fire. I selected the Manor of the Duke scenario which intrigued me since I could reverse the locations of the combat card I played by using 2 lore and I felt that would give me a lot of flexibility. With Kent’s victory conditions it was no surprise he selected a missile heavy force composed of 4 Archers, 3 Citadel Guard, 2 Battlemages, 1 Siege Golem and 2 Crystal Spires (gives units 1 additional die on the attack). I selected an infantry heavy force lead by 2 heavy hitters with 2 Reanimates, 2 Archers, 2 Bone Horrors, 2 Necromancers, 1 Banshee, and 1 Barrow Wyrm.

I soon learned why Bone Horrors were only 3 points as their ability to ignore retreats and taking a wound instead backfired on me during combat with the Citadel Guards of the Daqan as both of my units were wiped out by the 2nd round of the game. I had the advantage early though as my archers and surviving necromancer and Banshee on my right flank fulfilled my VP conditions to Kent’s 1 so that meant I was gaining 2 VP to his 1 early. Kent then settled down and proceeded to focus on the archers on the VP flag on my left as well as trying to shoot my units on my right in order to deny my VPs. He was quite successful in this aspect as he caught up and then led over me by being the first to 10 VP as my units were destroyed by missile fire (including my Legendary Banshee). This forced me to commit my melee units (reanimates) in the center to replace the archers on the VP flag while my Flying Barrow Wyrm flew over to the VP flag on Kent’s side. This Undead Dragon was successful in pushing off Kent while my Reanimates managed to regain the flag on my left and this meant I had denied Kent his 1 VP per turn and he would be forced to destroy me by missile fire to gain more VPs. Kent tried to do this but got stuck at 10 points while I soon overtook him as I was gaining 2 VP a turn to his 0. He finally moved some of his missile units closer and finally destroyed all my reanimates and gained my flag, but by then I was way ahead and with my Barrow Wyrm safely sitting on Kent’s flag hidden behind forests and protected by Kent’s missile units I managed to win 16-12.

The brand new Undead are decimated but manage to capture and hold on to the VP producing objectives as Kent's reinforced Daqan missile units remain static for too long a time and lose despite having most of his army intact!

This is really a great game and I am saddened by FFG’s apparent lack of continuous support for the game. I failed to use my units optimally and also failed to raise my dead but I did enough by focusing on the VP conditions better than Kent despite having just 2 units out of 10 left at the end of the game. I would like to get in more plays either with or against the undead to get a better feel of the new units and undead faction.

Roll for the Galaxy = 1 Play

I requested Kent to bring his copy as I miss playing this dice management and role selection game. Kent does well in this game and that play was no different as while I was the first to 12 to end the game Kent had more 6 cost developments than me which he managed to maximize. His tableau also ended up also giving him a lot more points than me so he ends up with a huge 49-29 win.

Kent's 6 cost developments give him a huge boost as he crushes me. Kent 49 (Tiles 35 VP 3 Goals 2 Bonuses 9) Me 29 (Tiles 26 VP 3).

Smash Up: It's Your Fault! = 1 Play (NEW)

I just got this so Kent and I tried it out by playing a game purely from this set. Kent selected the Tornadoes and I denied the Sharknado combo by getting Dragons and Sharks while Kent got Superheroes. All factions had their advantages but the Base altering actions of the Dragons proved a real hindrance to Kent as the Dragons forced Kent’s powerful Superheroes to by reduced in Power and Kent himself got less points when bases scored. My Sharks provided the Minion control although there were some Superheroes which could not be destroyed. It was a very tight tit for tat game with Kent breaking the last base but miscounting the points making me beat him by just a point!

A VERY close game with me just edging out Kent 16-15!

Star Realms = 1 Play

The final game to close the afternoon was a quick game of this space themed duelling deckbuilder. I built a rainbow deck but relied heavily upon yellow to disrupt Kent as well as blue to heal my authority. My attack engine triggered faster and I swiftly bring Kent’s authority to 0 as his investment in bases proved to be a hindrance for his engine as I easily got rid of them.

The Blob Destroyer gets in the killing blow as I clobber Kent 43-0!

Dominion was my first modern game. It's like visiting an old friend. Its mechanisms are simple, but strategy can be deep.
