Also check out Battle Line, which is basically the same game with some optional tactic cards which add a nice depth.

I've been playing this one for years. My wife and I never get bored of a quick game and it is a perfect starter game to build the confidence of non-gamers.

In Schotten-Totten, the colorful, cartoony cards, if not the gameplay, are Scottish-themed.

Perhaps a telling indicator of theme-thinness, the game was later re-themed as ancients combat in Battleline.

It's a fast filler game. I don't know what it's doing here. It's just great.

Related games: I have owned Battle Line first and loved it, just like my wife does. After about 25 plays I suggested trying the original Schotten-Totten rules. I had to admit that while the tactics cards add a little flavor and variety to the game, Schotten-Totten is a bit even better: it's more tense and somehow a bit more balanced. Still I really like Battle Line and that belongs to my "extended top 50" as well; I just didn't want to add the two games as two separate entries.

I played Schotten-Totten many times before Battleline came out. I played Battleline and couldn't help wonder why anyone would screw up a great game with the inclusion of the tactics cards! Most of the tension in the game was gone.

Learning them the other way, I was surprised by the extra tension in Schotten-Totten. Still I love the thematic fun the tactic cards add to the game, but ST is more tense and probably tension is what I most appreciate in games.

I go the opposite way. Ad Astra has a little more complexity with the variable execution order and the transit time and I think it makes a better game. Race for the Galaxy is just a little too simple for my tastes.

You play coloured, numbered cards into a row of slots. Very simple, but leads to agonizing decisions and varied game states.

Note: The bastardized Battle Line should probably be avoided at all costs! It adds in a bunch of Ameritrashy cards.

Which are optional! OF COURSE you should buy Battle Line. Then you can use or leave out the Tactics cards as you see fit. I enjoy having the option to play both ways.

I'm still playing the original edition of Schotten-Totten. I played the Battle Line variation once and didn't think it really added anything to the basic charm of the game (though it didn't really detract anything, either). But with this game I think elegance is enough.

Nice to see another true believer!

And besides, the cards in Schotten-Totten are MUCH better than those for Battleline.

Yes, those Battle Line cards are pretty stiff and slick.

Turns out, I already had ST in my briefcase and didn't realize it -- in the form of the Rage cards I use for Ever Green. It's a deck of 0-9 in six suits. Just remove the 0's, and play ST with it. Lovely!
