In Schotten-Totten, the colorful, cartoony cards, if not the gameplay, are Scottish-themed.
Perhaps a telling indicator of theme-thinness, the game was later re-themed as ancients combat in Battleline.

#29
nr. of plays: 19 + a few against AI
It's a fast filler game. I don't know what it's doing here. It's just great.
Related games: I have owned Battle Line first and loved it, just like my wife does. After about 25 plays I suggested trying the original Schotten-Totten rules. I had to admit that while the tactics cards add a little flavor and variety to the game, Schotten-Totten is a bit even better: it's more tense and somehow a bit more balanced. Still I really like Battle Line and that belongs to my "extended top 50" as well; I just didn't want to add the two games as two separate entries.

You play coloured, numbered cards into a row of slots. Very simple, but leads to agonizing decisions and varied game states.
Note: The bastardized Battle Line should probably be avoided at all costs! It adds in a bunch of Ameritrashy cards.

I'm still playing the original edition of Schotten-Totten. I played the Battle Line variation once and didn't think it really added anything to the basic charm of the game (though it didn't really detract anything, either). But with this game I think elegance is enough.

Same with this. Such a good 2p game. Might have start putting in my gaming briefcase.
Edit: Not Battle Line. Played without the Tactics cards, as you should.
