Another interesting looking war game.
Is it worth picking up?

One of my New Year's Resolutions for 2012 is to play the games I have and enjoy more often rather than getting sucked into the next new thing. This is a game that I played quite a bit when it first came out, but it's been languishing on the shelf for a while since. I'd definitely enjoy playing one of the smaller scenarios at SNEW.

I'm currently playing scenario 0 solo. The plan is to play all scenarios in complexity order (0 9 8 4 7 6 5 3 1 10 2). My first Tactical Wargame

I'm surprised to find myself adding this game to this list so I guess I should make myself quite clear: I think FF:GD is a good game. It's well produced with some neat rules and I enjoyed playing it. It's just that, well, I was hoping to play it a lot more than just twice: it has tanks after all. Somehow FF:GD just didn't generate enough enthusiasm on the part of me and my regular wargaming opponent to get past Combat Commander, designer Chad Jensen's first WW2 tactical wargame. I still don't really know why.
So FF:GD was my most disappointing game of 2011. It was as if I'd ordered a steak in a restaurant and it turned up perfectly cooked and delicious, only for me to lose my appetite after a couple of bites.

This one is awesome! I got this after it was recommended to me by Marco. I'm really pleased with it and feel it's one of the best wargames to hit this year, tough decision because there have been some good ones come out.

I wasn't going to let this one slip by. No, it's not exactly Combat Commander, but there are TANKS! I also like the combat mechanics and the way unit actions are allocated. IMHO the maps and counters are top notch for a GMT game.

Wishful thinking really, since I don't own a copy. But two of my game buddies own it and I keep asking them about it each time I see them.
Let's hope...

I'm just mopping up a German victory in Scenario 2 in a Vassal game that has been going on for weeks. It's funny, I've been playing this scenario for long enough to really have my thoughts about the game system as a whole swing back and forth. Early on, I was finding it awkward and not especially enjoyable. Then we hit a sweet spot mid-game where I was really appreciating the mechanics. But as the game dragged, my feelings started to change again, and some of the simulation problems crept in, things like a fleet of stationary tanks staying put and firing over and over because it was cheaper than firing and moving, or units on one side of the board having to do the same action as units clear across the board despite distinctly different local conditions. At this point I really think the order/initiative mechanic works best in small scenarios, and some of the bigger ones make the system creak and groan more than it should. I still like the game, though.

Scenario 10: Cemetery Hill, Russia, night of 22-23 September 1942. I was the Soviet player and tried my best but the counter attack was an utter failure. The enemy was well positioned and managed to eliminate many Soviet units before they got close enough to fight back. To be honest, I don’t think this is an interesting scenario. This is a head on clash without much manoeuvring or strategic positioning. Many early Soviet attacks were like this, I guess. This scenario is a bit boring.

This is a more serious omission: forget to Return Fire (34.3). This happens less often now with experience but still, in the thick of things, it tends to be skipped.
A corollary of this is forgetting about keeping track of dice rolled for Rate of Fire (34.33). All too common.
Abandoning Guns & Vehicles (25) is a whole rule section that seems to be forgotten about too often.
