This will be a large 8 player team game using all of the aliens from the base game + the 3 expansions. Team games have teams sit on opposite ends of the table and work together so that both players get 5 points. There are some other rules around this, but just look up the third expansion if you want some more details. There will be no technology, but we will use a separate rewards deck from the first expansion for defense rewards.

I'm guessing around 2-3 hours for this to complete including teaching time. That said, if the metagaming, politiking, backstabbing and general douche-ery gets crazy, this could go longer, but it will be a BLAST!! If you don't like the idea of a game with lots of negotiations, broken promises, and table talk, this is not a game for you.

1. Josh
2. Jake
3. Jason
4. Joe (tentative)
5. Josh (tentative)
6. Brent (tentative)
7. Jon (tentative)
8.

Alternates:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.

Players marked as tentative are not 100% set on showing, but I will have definite answers from them a day or two prior to the game day. I'm expecting at least half of these players to not be able to make it. I'll make a list of alternate names and we will pull names from that list to fill any open spots (again you will know a day or two in advance if you've got a spot).

I'd like to start this in the first half of the day if possible (like 9:30 or so), but am open to suggestions on alternate start times. Any other questions, let me know.

This is the Cosmic Alliance rules, right? I've played my share of CE and would LOVE to join. I should be there by 9:30 without a problem, if this is still happening.

We still have every intention of playing though we might not get the full 8 players. I've added you to the list. I wouldn't be surprised if one or two of the others are running a little late so don't kill yourself getting there before 9:30.

Thanks to everyone who played! It was a crazy game and we got a full eight players at the last minute. Due to utter lack of paying attention, Dair grabbed half the deck at the beginning of the game. The classic Filch flare proves crazy and hilarious again! He pretty much controlled the game since no one payed attention to his filching ways always seemed to have a card for every situation. At the end of the game he and his ally Brian cruised to a relatively easy alliance victory.

I'm glad I've played the alliance rules to give them a shot and I'd be willing to try it again. But I think the sweet spot for me will be 5 or 6 players without the alliance rules. Thanks again to all who played!

Some rules clarifications: You CAN mix and match ships and cards for defensive rewards. Page 11 in the rulebook says that explicitly.

And if this card is right, http://cf.geekdo-images.com/images/pic1273745_md.jpg

Whenever we caught Dair he was supposed to lose a ship to the warp. Darnit! That may have calmed him down a bit.

Definitely! And thanks for the clarifications. We always misplay something in this game but it's still a favorite of mine.

Eric - Loser
Kweku - Machine
Zach - Magician
Ama - "switcheroo"
Me - Ethic

I didn't think I was getting a turn after we learned more about Kweku's Machine power, but he finally ended his turn since his ships were running low. Kweku and Zach got to 3 first, then Kweku, being a man of his word all game, promised to bring Zach with him to victory by continually mutually destructing us with his flare and with the Machine power, until I put a stop to the nonsense with Cosmic Zap. Ama further took Kweku out of the running with Plague, leaving him with only 2 ships and no home colonies. It was fun to target Machine! Even if it wasn't the most powerful race, it was the most annoying, because Kweku's turns took so loooooong as a result of not needing to end his turn unless he wanted to.

I was last for a good chunk of the game, last to 0, last to 1. Zach pity-invited me twice on attack as a result. On my last turn, I dragged both Ama and Eric from 2 to 4 with me for a four-way tie at 4 (Zach was already there). Probably shouldn't have dragged them with me, but I didn't think I was getting another turn anyway. Sure enough, Eric positioned for the win on his turn right after.

"Hey David, let's win together."

"Of course dude, we were in last place together earlier. Gotta stick together."

...we both played attacks. . His was a 40.

Ethic is boring! Need a red race next time. My other choice was Merchant.

lol David, I was Sorcerer. Yeah...glad I got to see Ethic played instead of being her. I think she would be a bit better if she got cards as an ally too, but her power is pretty blah. It actually wasn't Ethic I wanted to be btw, it was Filch - she's pretty :o) Her power seems 'ok' though. You should have been Merchant David, that power seems more interesting.

Yea Ethic is one of the top (Bottom?) 5 most boring powers in my book.

Too bad I didn't have a Card Zap for David's Cosmic Zap, the Loser Wild Flare + Machine power was what I was hoping for when I picked Machine. Send 1 ship in against a stack of them, use Loser Flare so we both lose, regroup my one ship, take another Encounter, wash rinse and repeat

Love the game in general, but for some reason this particular play felt kinda luke-warm to me

Just a handful of games that are barely dusty.

Cosmic Encounter - 8 months, it's fun but can drag in parts.
Black Friday - 8 months, online. I still don't know the rules to the game!
Briscola - 7 months, I only play this at particular gatherings, but it's decent enough.

Starring, in Turn Order:

Jason as Leviathan (Attacks with Planets, which add a bunch of strength) --- New
Wendy as Warrior (Gains Experience Points for battling)
Kweku as Lunatic (Allies Against Self)
Eric as Butler (Serves Others for Tips)
Ama as Prophet (Predicts Winner of Encounters in Exchange for a Free Colony)

Jason and Wendy started out hitting strong, but all of us were tempered by Eric's super combo: Plague (absolutely destroys target) and Clone Flare (lets you keep an artifact you used, in this case Plague), which let him nail one of us each and every turn since no one had a Card Zap to stop him. Evil Butler. Really should have checked his references...

Eventually I got a Finder card from the Special Rewards deck, and was able to steal Eric's Clone Flare, putting an end to the combo (I'm a hero!)

We were all hovering around 3 foreign colonies, when Ama attacked Eric. Eric offered a Negotiate, which Ama seemed willing to do. I announced that I had just drawn a Quash in the last encounter (stops a deal), and that I would use it if they tried to Negotiate. Eric played an N as planned, but Ama didn't want to put her next encounter at risk so she attacked him. Did I REALLY have the Quash? I'll never tell...

After Ama's turn, Jason had a good chance at winning -- he started his turn with 3 colonies, and with his Leviathan power (attacks with planets, planets add +20) he could easily stirke hard twice and win two encounters since the 40 attack had been accounted for.

Ama started getting cocky about her hand when she was on defense for Jason's 4th colony, he played a Morph and Morphed into her 30 attack! And he let me and Eric tag along. Now every single player had 4 colonies and we were all in position to win.

Oh, and that last attack knocked out Ama's power, which would have pretty much assured her victory otherwise since she could have just kept sitting out of battle and predicting the offense as the winner. Same thing we did to Paul one game when he was Prophet. Seems like knocking out Prophet's power is the way to go...

Jason got his final encounter and attacked me!

I laughed a rich hearty laugh as all 4 players doggy-piled on me, acting like a real Lunatic (true to my alien power). I warned the others that the only way I would spare them when I ruled the Galaxy was if they sided with me. They looked at each other and shrugged, because it was 4v1 and Jason attacked me with his planet to boot.

Just to mess with them I played my lowest attack, a -4. Their total was like 66 or something. They were confused for only a second before I played Emotion Control, changing both of our attacks to Negotiates -- and Me and Jason won the game through a slick deal.

P.S. Butler is hilarious. Glad Eric picked him!

this was fun, took forever and had layers upon layers of random events. Would play again, but that might jeopardize my unbeaten streak.

I was almost able to pull off the win in round 3, but had to wait till round 4 and share the victory with Aram. At that point we were at the two hour point, and the fun of the craziness was wearing off.

How many players? Did player 2 get help that in retrospect seems ill-advised? Sounds that way. In a three-player game, allying should be considered carefully.

That said Cosmic can lend itself to some gamey play depending on the players/Aliens in play (in one of my recent games, one of the players basically threw the game to his wife. Legal but...shake

How can one turn last an hour, since you wrote:

This game can certainly be long, but turns are fast. I never saw anyone winning on turn 2. It can theoretically happen, but it takes players who seriously misunderstand how the game works.

I think CE is one of those love it or hate it games.

On which side of the coin you fall seems to be mostly dependant on the attitude of the group playing it. It's a negotiation and bluffing game, so anybody who's not into it or needs to have control over their strategy should probably avoid it.

Try with another group and see if it clicks.

Don't give up hope! I was in the same boat, almost never able to get this to the table. Bought the FFG version when it came out (and had the AH version for a few years before that); played it maybe three times in all those years.

And now a couple months ago we started a weekly game night at work and Cosmic Encounter has been a hit. I've gotten 2-3 games a week, every week, for the past couple months, and I don't see myself ever getting sick of this game.

For me, I enjoy this game, but don't admire it. It always feels slightly unwieldy with trying to persuade other players to support you and can sometimes come down to whining. I don't think there is much here to admire, but there is a lot to enjoy!

Another ameritrash game I like. Late encounters tend to be pretty epic with everyone allying against the offence. The encounter that ends it is when the offence manages to somehow destroy all of the resistance. That's why many players save all their good cards for the late games.
A lot of players however seems to think that allied victory is anticlimactic, especially when done with a colony-for-colony deals.

Allied victories are frowned upon in my gaming group. This game is all about kicking people in the pants, so why agree a joint win??

This one would be great to start, if one person doesn't show there is nothing to reset just remove a color. Downside is no one but me has played it. Also not sure how it will be preceived.

I'm not sure the theme would work for many people. I have actually never played it. But is there a way to play without the 20 different "characters"? Like a basic game where people wouldn't have to study their unique abilities beforehand?

OMG Joel you must play CE! It's fantastic.

But not at all a good gateway. Here's my thoughts on that, actually, written a few months ago elsewhere: http://boardgamegeek.com/article/8606384#8606384

The bust of the Con for me.On Friday Mark tells me that six players have signed up for Cosmic. The game I have only plays five so I buy an expansion next door at the vendor table for a sixth player. Cost was twenty five smackers. On Saturday I start adding the expansion to the deck. That night only one person shows up. He decides to play something else.I get at least eight bruises on my body playing Schnapp including my foot being stepped on twice.
Sunday Alex whose main purpose at the Con was to play games from this list that he created wants to play Cosmic Encounter. Two others play. Tom and Karen. Just terrible. Everybody hates it and can't wait for it to be over so Tom ends it early. I had so much fun playing it with Tom Vasal at Total Con.It is a game that you either like or hate. On Sunday I gave up my Slapshot slot to teach this. Next year if I bring it it will just be a pick up game. I'll ask if anyone wants to play. Thank goodness it was not the last game I played.

Just sounds fabulous. didn't really grok haggis, no surprise, I seem to have a block with card games.
I get that this game is sensitive to who is playing it (what game isn't) but it seems like it has potential for some gaming magic moments.

yeah I did think, how hard can it be to pick out the best 20 and write them down, but I think thats a bit mental so i will keep it and give it a try before being too hasty. I do think I have a group of friends who would like this, its basically a game that can appeal to non gamers because they are going to end up drinking and not taking it too seriously, which seems like it would work in this case, am I right?

I've played a lot of Cosmic Encounter. I don't dislike the game at all, but I'm usually not thrilled about playing it. This time, though, was a lot of fun, very tense, very funny, very wacky. I realized that this game is the kind of game you want to have 10 expansions to, because the wackier the powers, the more fun you have. This was the right game for the right time of day. I lost (of course), because I was stuck in a permanent alliance with the Void, I couldn't take a planet without him coming along, and I couldn't find another person to ally with to get me from 3 to 4 foreign colonies. Never mind that the Claw was sitting back, waiting to grab my colony and drag it back to his home sector for the win. Lots of fun.

Latest episode of the FATCast I announced that CE is the most overrated AT game of all time.

I don't dislike the game at all, but I'm usually not thrilled about playing it.

So true!

Missing 1 of 42 "Cosmic Tokens". Box bottom is dished from being stacked on smaller box. No tears, however. Remainder of box has very minor shelf wear (whitening at corners and edges). Components are excellent to like new.

Shipped free anywhere in the USA, will pay at least the first $10 internationally.
