Another matching/ordering game I'm considering trying with the students. I didn't know if they'd find the plastic animals too young.

March is a month where I was lucky to have any new games at all. I did slip in this small number thanks to some flexibility from family and friends early in the month, but no more were possible. My wife's grandmother began to have a rapid decline in her health. Of course family is always more important than gaming, so we spent a lot of time with grandma on nights we would normally be gaming. But, as I said, we did slip in a few. Picking a favorite was a challenge since none of them knocked my socks off, but I went with the one I feel we are more likely to play again.
= Botswana - I've been curious about this game for a long time. I almost bought it years ago in the Loco version, but I'm glad I waited for the Botswana version because you get to play with fun plastic animals. Sadly, I'm just not sure this is a very good game. At times I felt like I had zero control over the outcome, and other times I felt like no one could stop my brilliant plans. I'm sure the truth is about halfway between those 2 points, but initially it seems a little difficult to comprehend the strategy. That could be considered a compliment because people sometimes crave strategic depth without complex rules. In fact I love how short the rules sheet is for this game, it allows me to teach the game in seconds, even reading the rules at the table. I just wish there was a little more to the game. It doesn't seem to have that "wow" factor that other quick games like this possess. I was also a little disappointed with the cheap quality of the animals. I'm not giving up on Botswana yet, but I'm pretty sure it will never be a favorite of mine.
= Castellers - I bought this game back in October, but it was missing a piece. It took some time to get a replacement, but the day I received that piece, we played the game. Sadly the game wasn't really worth the wait. It's not that the game was bad, it was just uninspiring. I did appreciate how simple the rules were, but it just felt like the lack of complexity led to minimal strategy. I mean the primary tough decision is when to start a tower, but many of the decisions after that are fairly straightforward. I'm sure I'm understating the strategic aspect, but it just felt too basic. The other odd thing about our first play of this game was a 4-way tie. That's right, 4 players all scored 13 points. This has got to be a coincidence, I can't imagine it is that common to see ties in the game. I definitely want to give the game a few more chances, because it's relatively fast and definitely has cool components. Of course I even have a concern with those components. It is extremely annoying having the stickers only on one side of the blocks because you can't see what colors/numbers your opponents need. Plus those little base discs aren't wide enough for even 4 Castellers wide. Oh well, maybe it will be better next time.
= Arch Rival - I picked this game up at Goodwill because I remembered some geekbuddies saying it was a very enjoyable and unique dexterity game. Well, no offense to those geekbuddies, but I've played it once and I think I'm ready to return it to Goodwill. Wow, this game was bad. First of all, I'm not a big fan of games like Jenga where there isn't a winner determined, just a loser. So I was already biased against the game. But that's not the worst part. The arch is really difficult to set up, and when I say really difficult, I mean extremely! The game could almost be about setting up the arch without knocking it over, because that in itself is a challenge. The actual play of the game is shorter than the setup. In fact, the youth group I was playing with started to set it up for a second game after the first, and they got bored trying again and again to get the arch to stay up. They ended up just scrapping the game and playing Loopin' Louie instead. I suppose at $1.99 I shouldn't feel ripped off, but that five minute game certainly didn't seem worth it.

This was recommended to me when I was looking for good games to play with a grief stricken friend. I'd never played, but picked up a copy to try it out. I really like this (for grief or otherwise). The animal pieces are gorgeous and add a nice touch to the game that probably makes it more fun than it might really be. Very simple to learn and play, quick set up and play time, and small box make this a good addition to our shelves. Good bang for the buck.

Teaches in 2 min., a round plays in 5 min. full game will take 20-30 min.
Brilliant game that is easy to teach to non-gamers, but with enough complexity from trying to read your opponents that gamers can love it too. The painted animals in the Botswana edition of this also help it get to the table (a friend had the FFG "Loco!" version and could never get it to the table).

Debrief, but don’t interrogate. After trying a new game, find out what they like and didn’t like about the game. However, recognize that they have not played as many games as you, and may not have the ability to vocalize their feelings beyond, “it was boring,” “I liked the little trains.” Your job is to figure out what they actually mean with their vague statements, so you can make good game acquisitions going forward. This is hard. It took me forever to figure out why my wife didn't like Botswana. After some clarification, it turns out she doesn't like take that style of game; a game where she doesn't feel in control and feel like a math problem (she hasn't liked any Knizia games).

I still think this is a very good game with great components. I don't know why it has been gathering dust for so long, but it will be back on the table soon.

This really neat game came also from my Secret Santa. I always wanted to get this version of the game, but I always thought it was a bit too much and ended up investing in something else. As I pointed out, that makes it perfect material for a Christmas present.
