Definitely Quandary rather than any of the newer printings. It's a trivially fluffy game - but also quite tractable to inflict on folk that could never be convinced to play a more serious game.

Another one that could be played with a Sticheln deck but the chunky balelite tiles make the game so much more fun. The version with the plastic animals is also fun but not quite as good as this version.

Vilas the Venereal had a bit of a midnight itch and he got up to scratch it. When he did, he found this himself in a bit of a Quandary with a person named Mercari, from whom he bought this grail for $3. It soothed a different itch to be sure.

He eventually found some medicinal plants to soothe his burning loins.

I forgot about this one, so I'll add it in. It's crazy, I know, yes Loco !

Can you outwit your opponents and be better than them in a quick Knitzia classic. 30 cards, 5 colours (suits), 0 (loco) thru 5. Place a card on top of the coloured pile, if it was zero say Loco, take a chip from any pile. If you forget to say loco, you shouldn't take a chip. Score when one suit runs out based on the numbers on top multiplied by the chips in that colour.

Not all the cards are in the deck, so you never know which suit will close things out. 2p remove 4 cards. 3p remove 3 cards, 4p remove 2 cards, 5p variant remove 5 cards. Everyone starts with the same number of cards. Play same number of rounds as there are players, everyone gets to go first sometime.

It says for 2-4p, though we manage to play up to 5.

Flinke Pinke (aka: Quandary, Thor, Loco, Botswana, Wildlife Safari)

30 cards. 5 colors. 6 cards per color, values 0-5. 5 chips in each color. Shuffle cards and deal out. Play any card, then take any available chip from the main pool. Game is over when all 6 cards of a color are played. All chips are worth a value equal to the last card played of the chips color. (If the last red card to be played was 3, then all red chips are worth 3).

Simple. Fast. Fun. Filler.

I guess Botswana, Loco!, and Quandry are just reissues of the same game, rethemed. Thor is a version with additional mechanics that alter gameplay.

Is Botswana a legacy game, or simply a reprint? Was Wildlife Safari the best version yet (components and all considered)?

This week's Game Night we started out with Diamonsters, a bidding game where players are trying to obtain monsters and their diamonds.

Players will each receive 5 cards numbered 1 - 5. These cards will be used to bid on the other monsters in the deck. The game begins with the top card on the deck being flipped over.

Players will now bid on this monster. The highest number (5) wins the round unless someone plays a 1. In these cases, the 1 would win. Players are attempting to collect monsters in a way so that they acquire the most diamonds. Diamonds are printed on the bottom of most cards (all but the 3) and consist of 1 or 2 diamonds. However, on the bottom of the 4 card, there are 2 broken diamonds. If a player collects this card, their diamond total is subtracted by two.

Players will continue the round until one of two things occur: Either a player collects three of the same type of monster or, a player collects five diamonds. Once the round has ended, the player with the most diamonds in their collection receives a diamond gem. Players will continue to play the game until one player has collected a specific amount of gems dependent upon player count.

Diamonsters really isn't the game for me. I think it would play pretty well with young children, probably 5 or 6 to 10, maybe 12 years old. I just don't think there's a lot going on here. It may be enjoyed by some, but it's certainly not for me. I want a little more meat and Diamonsters is all bone.

Next up, we played Boom: Runaway. In this game, players are trying to help their bombs escape, hoping to have the most escape each round in order to score the most points.

I'll be explaining the variant here (3 players) as we found it to be the best way to play. Each player receives a paradise card. This is where their bombs are trying to escape to. Players now remove two 3s and two 5s from the bomb deck. This allows for each suit to have 8 cards numbered from 1 - 7 and a second 4. Thirteen cards are dealt to each player and the last remaining card is placed out of the game for this round. Play will begin by flipping over the top card of the bodyguard deck.

Each bodyguard card explains what types of bombs are able to escape and how many. In some cases, a zero may be listed under a color. This means that if anyone plays a card of this color, the bomb would not be able to escape.

Once the bodyguard is shown, players look through their hand and choose one card to play face down. Once all players have chosen a card, the cards are shown. This first phase allows players to bluff or just to see where other players are currently at. Now, players will choose two additional cards and once again show them simultaneously.

Once each player has shown their three cards, players will see which bombs were able to escape. Going from left to right on the bodyguard card (starting with the brown suit) players see how many bombs are able to escape. Players now count up their total cards of the color. If the number does not exceed that which is printed on the bodyguard card, all players are able to send their bombs to paradise with the player who has the most bombs placing their cards face up and the other players placing their cards face down.

If the total bombs exceed the total printed on the bodyguard card, the player with the most bombs must place them back into their hand. Remaining players will now count up their totals until bombs are able to escape, following the rule of the player with the most sending his bombs face up to paradise and the players with the least sending his bombs face down.

Play will continue until at least one player has two or less cards in hand. At this time, any cards still in any players' hands are set aside and players score their paradise. Each card counts as one point and each face up card is worth its face value. Points are tallied and play will begin again. The player with the most points at the end of three rounds wins.

Boom: Runaway is a pretty good little game. The concept of playing the first card face up followed by two additional cards makes this one a winner to me, allowing for knowledge to be mixed well with what I know, what my opponents know and what we all know. I also like how the scoring works and that being the one with the most points is good and bad. Lots to like here, it plays a little too long and can sometimes be confusing. That being said, it is good!

We then moved on to Wildlife Safari, a game where players are attempting to manipulate the points animals are worth in order to score the most points.

Players will set up the 25 awesome toy animals (five of each type). The deck is set up based on player count with the removal of cards and the rest of the cards are dealt out. Play will begin with the start player.

On their turn, a player will play any card in their hand and then choose any animal. Players don't have to take the same type of animal as the card they played, they are free to take any animal. So playing a leopard and then taking an elephant is totally fine.

Players will take turns playing one card and taking one animal until one set of animals has had all six of its cards played. Cards are positioned so that the topmost card of each animal is how many points that animal is worth. Once all six cards of one animal have been played, players score their animals. Players will play multiple rounds (based on how many players are playing) and the player with the most points at the end of the game wins.

Well, all I can really say is that I'm super glad this came back into print. It's been on my wishlist since I first started the hobby. It amazes me how something so simple can be so fun. Maybe it's those little animal toys! I don't know what it is, but I really like this one! Knizia does it again!

Moving right along we played Cheesonomics, an economic card game which mixes a lot of mechanics into a very fun experience.

There's a pretty good amount of setup for this game. The round cheese board is placed in the center of the table. The deck is set up with 20 cards placed in the deck for each player playing. 15 tokens representing the 5 different territories are randomly chosen and set up into 3 cheese wheels. These tokens represent the market at the beginning of the game. The curd money is set up and each player will randomly receive a knife. Each knife has a type of cheese printed on it. The player with the cheese which comes first in the alphabet will go first.

Each player on their turn is able to taken one of three actions. The first action is called churning. When a player churns, they take their knife and place it on one of the segments on the cheese board. This will represent which color or type of cheese they wish to churn. Once chosen, the opponents must give the player a color which matches what the player is churning. If an opponent is unable to give the required cheese, they must show their hand to the player and the player will take a cheese of their choice. The churning player will then keep the cheese they wish to hold on to and pass one cheese back to each of the opponents. Other players may take this action on their turn. If they do, they cannot churn the same type of cheese as a previous player in the same round. For instance, if a player chooses to churn goat cheese, no other player can churn goat cheese until the knife has been removed from the board (at the beginning of the player who churned goat cheese's turn).

The second action is placement. Players choose cards of the same type from in their hand and place them in front of them. Players are free to play their entire hand in these instances, as long as all 5 of the cheeses are the same type. For instance, if a player has 5 cow cheese, even if they are all different colors, they may play them. Players draw back up to 5 cards in their hand once they've played their cards.

The third action is the market phase. In this phase, players are able to sell up to three cheeses of the same type. These cheeses must have been placed on the table during a previous turn. Sales are based on market prices made up by the 15 tokens that were set up at the beginning of the game. Each token is worth 1 dollar unless it has a blue ribbon on it. Those are worth 2 dollars. Once a player has sold their cheese and taken their money, they must flip one of the tokens of the color of cheese they sold. In situations where a player has sold an animal cheese and the cheeses are different colors, they can choose which color they want to flip. For instance, if a player sold three goat cheese and they were green, yellow and blue, the player can flip any green, yellow or blue token. Sold cheese are set aside in a score pile for each player and are kept until the end of the game.

Play will continue until players are no longer able to draw additional cheese into their hands. Players take equal turns so if the starting player empties the deck, the other players are allowed to take one last turn. If the last player empties the deck, the game instantly ends.

Players will now liquidate any cheeses remaining on the table that were not previously sold during the game. These cheeses are worth one dollar each and are taken out of the game. Players do not make money on any cards remaining in their hand and those cheeses are taken out of the game as well.

Players will now score bonus money based on types of animals they obtained when selling cheese in the market phase. The player who has the most of a type of animal will receive bonus money based on how many animals they sold. For instance, if a player has 5 reindeer, they receive five dollars. Players with less receive no money and in cases where there are ties for the lead, those players would each receive the bonus money.

Once liquidation and bonuses are taken care of, players will count up their total money. The player with the most money wins the game.

Cheesonomics does economy gaming right in a small, lightweight package. I enjoy the fluctuation of the market, as well as "churning" and readying the cheese for the market. For what is such a simplistic game, there are so many great moments for strategy. Strategy is nowhere near the levels of "Speculation", but this will do in a pinch...and is great in its own right.

We ended the night with Yardmaster, a card game where players are trying to build the train the fastest, with the player reaching a set number of points first winning.

Players receive an engine card. The Railcar deck is shuffled and the top 4 cards are placed face up on the table forming the arrival yard. The exchange tokens are shuffled and randomly passed out, one to each player. The remainder of these tokens are set in the center of the table, free to be taken throughout the game. The Cargo deck is shuffled and each player is dealt 5 cards. The top card of the deck is turned over and set to start the discard pile. A starting player is chosen and the player to his right is given the Yardmaster token. Play begins.

On his turn, a player may perform two actions out of three available. They can do the same action twice or pick and choose different actions. The first action is drawing a cargo card. Players may choose to draw blindly from the deck or can choose the top card from the discard pile. However, if a bonus card tops the discard pile, this card may not be taken.

The second action is buying a railcar. Each railcar is worth a specific number of cargo based on the number printed on the card. Players must play the total cargo required to make the purchase. Players can also exchange other types of cargo as 2:1, however it must be of the type of exchange token they currently have. Once a railcar is purchased, the top card of the railcar deck replaces it in the arrival yard.

The third action is the exchange token. This action allows a player to swap out the token they have for any other token, either one in the center of the table or one of their opponent's tokens. Opponents are not able to block this exchange.

When a player purchases a railcar, they must immediately place it on their engine if they're able to. The railcar must match either the color or the number of the previously placed car. So a red 3 could be placed on a blue 3, but not a purple 4. Anytime a railcar is purchased and not able to be hooked up, it stays in a the player's sorting yard. At any time, if the card is able to be played due to another card making room for it, it must be played.

For players who have the Yardmaster token, they are able to take three actions. Once again, these can be of all the same action or of multiple different types of actions. Once the Yardmaster's turn is over, they must pass the token to the next player, thus making them the new Yardmaster. There are also some bonus cards in the cargo deck. These each have different bonuses which can be used without counting towards the use of an action.

Play will continue until one player is able to successfully link all of his railcars, scoring the required amount of points needed depending on player count (either 16 or 18 points).

Yardmaster is an excellent mix of beautiful art and wonderfully simplistic gameplay. With each action, you feel like you needed just one more action and, in those special circumstances where you get that one more action...guess what! You needed ONE MORE ACTION! But I really love that. Good game with great components (Kickstarter version).

So another Game Night in the books. Good times as always. I'm looking forward to the rest of March to see what new great games we play. As always, see you next week and thanks for reading!
