We had a small group to start - I always arrive to game nights on time or early...

We started with the The Game: Are you ready to play The Game?. Three player - we didn't do well, but not as bad as I thought at first. I think we had a score of 12 and the rules says 10 or less is good.

The group grew so we played a quick game of Knit Wit.

Then another large group game of Between Two Cities.

We moved onto Long Shot - a great fast paced horse race game that plays a large group well.

We moved on to a big game of Colt Express - total chaos with six players. With several new players and my unfamiliarity of the expansion I decided to leave that out.

Keeping with the large group games I ended the night with a game of 6 nimmt!

Look for me at Origins with WDYPTW ribbons and ask to play a game!

Our last play for the weekend. Lisa and I had started this earlier in the day, but set it aside when Mike came over and finished it up that evening. Luck-heavy game of horse racing. Its entertaining, but I think its a bit too lucky heavy, and you wind up with way too many cards as you can't play them nearly as fast as you get them.

While the Lounge crew were still befuddling stormtroopers and firing lightning bolts out of their fingertips, the seven gamers in the front room needed something to take them to the next config. So, they brought out Long Shot, and plays seven in a reasonable amount of time. (I guess Tim's copies of 7 Wonders, Between Two Cities, and Camel Up were too hard to find or something.)

Andy, Tim, Tom, Elden, Kory, Tallya, and Jerry were the horse bettors, buyers, and jockeys.

So, like most games of Long Shot, this led to an interesting round-table discussion of probability theory and betting strategies. Nah, just kidding - most people just play the game and don't think too hard about that stuff. But betting games typically are somewhat more strategic than most people seem to think they are. Obviously, there's a lot of luck involved, and if we roll Horse 2 a lot more than other numbers it will probably win. But the point of Long Shot is not to guess which horse is going to win - it's to pursue a betting strategy that maximizes your equity versus the other players at every decision point in the game.

The cards in Long Shot allow you a small bit of control in how the actual race turns out; otherwise, it's all about getting the right bets down. Betting itself is mostly governed by the cards, too - a regular $5 bet on a horse of your choice is a fairly weak move, unless you don't have anything better to do with your cards.

Anyway, this is why Tim kept yelling at Andy for moving the wrong horse during the game. Andy chose to move back a horse he had no bets on, even though that increased the chances that his own horse would not finish first, whereas Tim argued that while Andy might win more absolute money if Horse 3 beat Horse 6, he would still lose ground to the owner of Horse 3 and to players who had more money on Horse 3 than he did. Instead, the optimal strategy is to consider the marginal equity you have on each horse relative to every other player before deciding which one to move.

This is obviously not a trivial problem, although I suspect expert players (people who play for money) could solve it. But in terms of a regular board game, it supplies a pleasing complexity to what, on the surface, appears to be a straight up luckfest of a game.

Anyway, as it turns out Andy's horse (#7) actually did win anyway - but Kory's Horse #2 came in second, and Kory had big bets on both #7 and #2, which allowed him to finish with $295 and the victory. Andy came in second with $195, while Tom, who had money on most of the winners but did not own a horse in the to three, wound up with $165. Tim's horse faded down the stretch and he wound up with $150, while Tallya's Horse #3 showed, but she had been stockpiling money rather than betting so she ended up with just $110. None of Jerry's bets paid off and he ended with $90, while Elden, who had two very slow horses, put all his cash into bets on one horse (#6), and when that horse failed to finish he wound up with zero dollars. I actually like this go-for-broke strategy - there's no point in playing it safe by betting behind the leaders and coming in fourth with a hundred bucks - if the luck elements of the game aren't going your way, playing for a long shot is your only reasonable chance of pulling out a win.

Game day on Saturday and we all had a first play of this gambling horse racing game. Top notch components and a race that came down to the wire made this a winner. Very surprised how much fun this was.

NEW TO ME

This is a unique auction set collection game, we got a rule wrong which let the scoring be more open than it should have been, so we will revisit it. Beautiful game and I am a sucker for auctions type games so hoping this gets tight and stays around, should play in about 45 minutes, we went long on that with the first play of course, but a 45 minute game with good decisions will be a winner.

We then played

7 Wonders 3 player I finished 2nd

Puerto Rico 4 player I took the victory with most money/goods tiebreaker

Ra 3 player I was a distant third, I usually do quite well in this game, but I just couldn't get anything going.

Biblios 2 player finished the evening with my favorite filler and squeaked out the 7-6 win.

I picked Longshot as the posting game because I've never tried a board game challenge before, so I don't know if I can stick to this or not. I've only been into the board game hobby for about a year, though my game collection has grown exponentially in that time. I'm trying to play with what I have instead of going out to buy that new Shiny Shiny. I plan on picking up no more than 12 new games this year (Pandemic Legacy, Above & Below, Fury of Dracula are definites) plus less than 10 Kickstarters. I am also trying to cull my collection, mostly my Euro games, as I can't usually find too many people who want to play these. My local game group usually prefers games with lots of minis or a really strong theme. I also really need to play my Kickstarted games, as these are usually expensive and if they aren't great, then I really need to cull them. *** denotes game may change. I'm not sure if I am allowed to switch games in all of these catagories or not (space/shipwrecked, etc.) I'll denote wins with and loses with . Adding a heart designation to my favorite in the category so far. Edit: I found a couple of the gamers that I know actually enjoy euro games - but ones that have some theme, like Trickerion. I will try to bring more of these to the group meet-up.

1. Get in Character.
January - Ghostbusters (Co-op we played as a family parents & 4yo & 5yo)
February - The Grizzled Wow, what an emotional game, in war there are no good choices.
March - Planned to play Source of the Nile, but decided to try Tokaido with my sister-in-law so I'm counting that because of the cool Japanese character I got to be.
April - Planning to play Marvel Heroes - looked at the rules and boy oh boy - they are really intimidating. I looked for a playthrough and there just isn't a good one so this game is going to take some work...Might switch to another for this category - I've been wanting to try out Fallen! We ended up playing Fallen 2x, because we really enjoyed it. It is a strictly 2 player game with a choose-your-own-path style of gameplay. One player plays the Dungeon Lord and sends monsters/traps verses the other player (hero). The cards are well-written, sometimes very funny. Overall very enjoyable and unique. It's kind of like a dungeon-crawler game without minis. heart
May - I played Fallen again which really sucks me in when i play it. I was the Dungeonlord this time.
June - I played Claustrophobia with a friend of mine when all of the others who were supposed to show up bailed and we needed to find a 2 player game. It's a 2 player only dungeon crawl game played in the catacombs/tunnels so there are rules about how many minis can fit on each tile (hence claustrophobia). I played heroes and she played the denizens. Interesting movement rules and ended up very balanced although at the beginning it felt like the heroes had the upper hand. This evolved quickly as my heroes took damage which they couldn't heal and lost the ability to use certain dice faces. Claustrophobia had been sitting on my shelves for a bit, but it does a good job at what it is supposed to do...I enjoyed it and will definitely buy some expansions. One more off the shelves and out of shrink!

2.Just Punched It ***

January - Cauldron - Enjoyed this part abstract/part potion making game.
February - Pandemic Legacy: Season 1- so we had never played Pandemic at all, we decided to try with the basic rules first. We lost due to too many outbreaks. We'll be playing this one a lot, I assume.
March - I planned to play Fallen and I might still do that, but we decided to pop Burgle Bros. out of the shrink and try that as we were in the mood for a co-op. And it is a hard one to beat... I got spotted by the guard too many times on the first floor and we lost the game on the second floor. The mechanics are easier to manage than some co-ops I've tried, but the challenge is still there, mostly because of how many alarm spaces and the randomness of the guard.
April - Played Mysterium 2x as a 2-player game. I know it would be better with more, but we really enjoyed it anyway. It was Dixit + Clue for us. heart
May - Instead of playing Shadowstar Corsairs as I was expecting to, I received Star Wars: Rebellion for my birthday/mother's day so I just had to pop that out and play it. Unfortunately my Rebellion got smashed on turn 5 by the ultra-mobilized Empire.
June - I finally got to Shadowstar Corsairs this month when a friend of mine came over who loved space games. I was excited about this one because of how beautiful the board was and the ships were. However, the game was frustrating because of how limited the actions were. It felt like the game was just trying to slow everything down. You can only choose actions in one category. To use a resource that is on a planet that you control - you have to mine each icon, then refine it, then do something else with a card (usually), and finally then you can take a whole action just to score it. That gets you a commendation (VP). I don't know if I like this game or not. The art is beautiful, and so are the components. The rulebook is well-written which is unusual for a Kickstarter game. However, I just don't know if I like the style of gameplay.

3. Follow the Money.

Myth with new 2nd edition rules, I sunk a lot of money into this game system so I really need to learn how to play it and enjoy it. This one I aim to play 1 x a month at least.
1/31 - Played solo Slaughterfield mode a couple of rounds to try to figure out movement, etc. on 1/31. I think I read the rulebook at least 4 times. I'm still not 100% comfortable with all of the symbols and how the game works. I'm not sure how much I like this one right now.
2/25 - Still need to play...seems to be the trend as the last done.
3/23 - Still need to play - having a hard time being motivated to play it solo, downloaded darkness app and will try teaching it to Chris.
3/30 - We played it 2 player for March and Chris seems to really like it and get it...good news for this game! We used the Archer and Soldier in the Weaver's Needs Scenario and got overrun on monsters because the Archer just couldn't get enough arrows.
4/12 - We played the first of the Kickstarter extra Story Quests (Blood on the Grass) which involved a small, medium, and large tile with several lairs that spawned baddies. Chris played the Acolyte and smoked foes with his holy powers. I played the Brigand and sniped baddies from the shadows. If I had thought about it, it really is an unlikely team of heroes. We managed to win this one barely. I had 1 hp left and Chris's character had 2 hp left when we cleared the last tile. It is becoming a more interesting game for us. Initially the customization was very daunting...now we realize how much potential the game has and also how much you would have to play it to keep all of the rules in your brain. heart
May - It's getting too late to get Myth in so I'll put my plays of Star Wars: Imperial Assault here as I recently bought the base game plus most of it's expansions which cost me a pretty penny. I'm loving the theme and game play.
June - After several one off plays, we've started a campaign in Star Wars: Imperial Assault because everyone really enjoys the Star Wars theme. We've got several Star Wars fans in on it, so it should be a good time. We've decided to try the base game plus twin shadows and accompanying small packs for the first campaign. Then, if we want to really keep it going, we'll pull out the Hoth and Bespin expansions and do a second campaign with those. Played this 3x.

4. Mini Me. ***

January - X-wing Miniatures b/c it's my husband's favorite game and he's the local judge so he doesn't always get to play on his game nights
February - Coup, a small game that was my stocking stuffer this past Christmas.
March - And Then We Held Hands - A different kind of game for us. It is part abstract, part card game, and part mental symmetry. We enjoyed it immensely. heart
April - We played Times Square last night and enjoyed it - a nice light strategy game. Each piece has some unique rules so that was a bit hard to remember, but we got it!
May - We played Kaleido, which is a cute little Japanese game about making a beautiful kaleidoscope. I kind of wish the pieces could have been made out of something transparent like plastic instead of the cardboard tiles, but it is a cute, innovative game.
June - We played another game by a Japanese designer. Parade is a great card game based on Alice in Wonderland. It plays larger groups well and it plays like a combo of many other popular card games, so we found it quick, fun, and easy-to-teach. Currently my favorite card game for more than 2 players.

5. Favorite Game

January - Firefly- This game feels so much like the TV series
February - Akrotiri - Thought about saving this for the Shipwrecked category, but this is my favorite 2- player game right now.
March - Played Above and Below and it makes me super happy when I do get to play even if I don't win. I'm not sure if it is the superb story telling or what. Love this game! heart
April - We played Caesar & Cleopatra and enjoyed this one again as it's been awhile since we've played it. It was one of the first games I bought...and loved. It's my third favorite 2-player only game...right after Akrotiri & Patchwork.
May - Planning on playing Munchkin + Supermunchkin together - one of my favorite party games
June - Mice & Mystics - This is one of my husband's favorite games because of how story based it is. Star Wars: Imperial Assault has probably replaced it as his favorite miniature game, but M & M still has a lot to offer story-wise. We are almost to the end of the base game...but we have so much more to explore. I look forward to painting this one and playing it with my kids soon as I think they will be ready soon.

6. It Came From Outer Space ***

January - Space Alert
February - Xia: Legends of a Drift System - Wow, what a game! It feels kind of like Firefly the Game, but more generic space-themed and a tile-based layout so the board changes every time you play. This might be my husband's new favorite out of my collection. We only played to 5 fame points because it was our first game and we had to play with un-official 2-player variant rules; I'll definitely be kickstarting the expansion whenever that comes out. In the meantime, I'll try to PnP some of the fan-made stuff. heart
March - Played Merchant of Venus, I enjoyed the gameplay, but my husband found the routes too restricting, the board too static after we discovered the last of the cultures he was bored by the manuevering to trade for the best deals. This game for us is the exact reverse of Firefly - Trading is primary and missions are secondary while with Firefly the missions come first and the trading is secondary. I liked the beautiful board, funny flavor-text/kooky trading goods, ship dashboards, and the changing market mechanic. I don't know if it will stay in my collection though, mostly because of Xia.
April - Planning to play Space Hulk 4th Ed, but I just realized that I don't have some of the Space Marine tokens. It must have been in the bag with the minis that I was trying to get painted that got stolen instead. I found some on e-bay to replace them, but it will be several more days weeks until they arrive, as I just found out they are coming from Greece. I may have to sub in a different game this month for Space... I'm thinking Star Trek: Fleet Captains. It was a lot of fun the first time I played - maybe I'll try the Romulans this time. UPDATE: Played Star Trek: Fleet Captains as the Romulans, but lost 7VP to Chris's 10VP with the Federation. It was a lot of fun and feels like Star Trek in a box to me. I haven't tried a lot of other Star Trek games, but this one is pretty awesome!
May - We played Galaxy Trucker2x, spaced out over a day and a half. I haven't opened up all of the expansions that came with the anniversary edition, but we enjoyed learning the base game quite a bit. The game is pretty fast! We played the intro scenario which I won and a real level 1 game which I lost b/c I never pulled any shields that I could play on my ship. I also read a rule wrong that would have allowed me a bit more time. It was fun, but definitely a game for people that don't mind their decisions being rushed. Building the perfect ship isn't really possible given the time limit, so you've just got to go with it.
June - Super Motherload - My husband and I really enjoyed this when we played it two player earlier this month. Deckbuilders are a new type of game mechanism for me, and I like how this one works. I was really winning until the very end of the game when Chris was able to do a combo that bought him five cards in one turn. It is easy to pick up and learn. For me, it was easier to figure out than Dominion (which has a lot of text). It is a more limited game, though, because there aren't any expansions out yet. I enjoy the art and the digging for jewels combined with the deck-building. I took it to a flgs for a game day and 4 players tried it. Some liked it, others found it too slow. They described it as Dig Dug Dig the Boardgame. Not having played the video game, I didn't know...but I like this version anyway. A solid easy-to-learn deckbuilder with great art and a cool concept.

7. Shipwrecked ***

January - Robinson Crusoe - Played with another family, didn't completely finish the game but we called it as a win.
February - Castaways - We got off the island on the last turn - we think. Honestly, the rules could use a re-do with this one. WE also think that it's strange that characters don't rest at night but rather have to use one of their two actions during the day to do so...but you still have to feed yourself at night. We homerule it b/c it doesn't make sense to us. I need to check out more info on this and Robinson Crusoe - I'm thinking one is going to be sold. We do really love how the encounters deck slides in depending on what choices you make.
March - PlayedAmerigo, but it took us 3 days to do it, on and off. The first time we tried, the rulebook was very difficult to understand regarding the "special" track and we messed up the game that way. After going on BGG and finding a player aid and reading some forums we understood better and started over. Once we understood the rules, it was a neat game for us. The cube tower was an interesting mechanic that we had never seen before. I lost pretty badly to my husband who managed to block me out of the two last islands that could be settled. heart
April - Planning to play Archipelago - my brain couldn't handle learning this last night - plan to try again tomorrow night. Ok, ok - I chickened out on this one. I don't know why but I just wasn't up for this much economics?? Anyway, we got out Tobago and played it instead after failing to learn Archipelago over several nights. I won this puppy by 18 points. This one is a great, quirky game!
May - We played Hansa, and as I suspected, my husband easily won as he is great with economic games. This one is just that - a pure economics game. Not my favorite category, though he really enjoys it.
June - - Still gotta play

8. Dust Collector of 2015.

January - Kemet - played a close 2 player game of this 1/12, interesting choices and I felt it was pretty tight even as a 2 player game. I won probably by 1 turn
February - Dungeon Petz - played it 2x, enjoyed it immensely, but my husband did not...but that might be because I smashed him early on in the game.
March - Played Lords of Waterdeep, which might our new favorite worker placement. It is smooth and makes sense to us. I think it is an easier worker placement than something like T'zolkin or Manhatten Project, but we really enjoyed it - and I totally won by 50 points. heart
April - We played the good, classic Agricola for the first time a few days ago. I think I bought this game when I first got into board games a little over a year ago, then opened the box, looked at the complexity of the rules, closed the box and stuck it on the shelf. After playing a lot of other newer worker placement/resource allocation type games, this one seemed a lot less daunting. I see this game's DNA flowing through so many others that I've played. Tied 27 to 27!
May - We played Ra: The Dice Game, yesterday as a short filler game during naptime. It was an ok dice game, but probably not worth what I payed for it. I think I'll be selling this one. It's a simple dice rolling/placement game...I want to try Discoveries to see if I prefer that one. Won it by a few points -
June -

9. Abstract Arts

January - Bridg-it - thrift store find and likely one of the oldest games I own.
February - Day & Night - bought almost a year ago b/c I like the theme, played it and I was Night and Chris played Day. He won a very close game. It's a hybrid between being an abstract and a card game. Next time I play this, I'll sub in My Little Ponies (Celestia and Luna) for the player token. Beautiful art. heart
March - Played Yinsh last night 2x. I've had it for a long time, but this is the first time I've played because I have a hard time getting abstracts to the table. The first game I lost by 1 move, and the second game I trounced my husband.
April - We played Stone Garden, which is a beautiful and relaxing Japanese designed game about creating a stone garden. It's a tile laying game with real rocks as well. Beautiful to see and zen to play. It's my second play of it, and I haven't won yet - but I'd play it almost anytime someone asks.
May - Played Lanterns and really enjoyed it, color matching madness.
June - I played Quoridor 3x, twice with Chris and once with my daughter. I received this in the Logistics Box of Generosity from the Thrift Guild participants, thanks! Somehow my brain doesn't think this way. I lost all three times.

10. Do You Have the Time? ***
I'll probably leave these set up on my game table until finished. It's difficult for me to play games that last longer than 2 hours because the only time I really get to do this is after my 2 little ones get to bed at night.
January - Runebound 2nd Ed. - Played with the Frozen Wastes Expansion - Started 1/31 finished 2/1, played a little over 3.5 hours.
February - Prophecy - I finished playing this and thought to myself that it is sort of Runebound lite. I haven't ever played Talisman which everyone seems to compare it to, so I'm not sure there. I guess I'll have to play Talisman next month to see. There were some mechanics I liked but overall it is pretty random who ends up leveling up enough to take on the big baddies and thus win enough artifacts to beat the game. We only played until someone got two artifacts since this was our first play ever.
March - We played Talisman Revised 4th Ed. Base Game last night. It frustrated my husband because of the extremely frequent dice rolling, though he ended up winning and I ended up being a Toad. Long game and trying to compare it to Runebound and Prophecy.
April - Planned to play Earth Reborn, but decided that I didn't want to play two long games from the same designer (Archipelago) nor two that echoed another's mechanics(Space Hulk), so we decide to play Arkham Horror instead. It was a 3+ hour game even after set-up, but probably because I had to learn it, too. We ended up winning just around midnight by closing all of the gates before the elder god showed up. heart
May - Played Colosseum which did take a significant amount of time at Geekway and was an awesome experience.
June - Haha! T.I.M.E. Stories 2x on the base Asylum scenario fits this category well because it is about time travel and the big mechanic is trying to complete a scenario within a certain amount of time, plus the game takes around a couple of hours for us to complete so it's longer-ish. Wow - this game is an awesome experience. Chris & I tried it with 3 characters the first time and ran out of time. On our second try, we remembered what we wasted time on and were able to have a successful mission with a score of 38 which is pretty great. On to the next expansion - it was soooo immersive (even more so than Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective) because of the art, etc., tense at some points, humorous at others, a great game to experience. I also took it to game day to teach the game to a group who had wanted to try it. I was good and didn't give any hints, they also ran out of time, but are keen on trying it again. Kind of like if Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective and Myst (the computer game) had a kid...that would be T.I.M.E. Stories. My friends enjoyed it b/c you are almost like Dr. Who. Awesome sauce!

11. Friends and Family Plan ***
I usually pick plus I'm usually interested in playing anything,so this one will probably be harder for me to complete. I'll say that it qualifies if I'm not really in the mood to play that particular game. This list will probably include some kid's games that I'm not a big fan of like Pretty, Pretty Princess, but play with my kids anyway or if my game group only wants to play a game that I'm not in to.

January - Pretty Pretty Princess (with my 5yo daughter and 4yo son), funny but takes surprisingly a long time to gather all the jewelry to end. I'm trying to get my daughter over being a sore loser with this one.
February - Kings of Air & Steam - Enjoyable airship game with a twist on pickup and deliver plus an interesting changing market system
March - Played a timed variant of X-wing Miniatures that allows you to accumulate points for blowing up other player's ships, but also allows you to re-spawn if you die and get back in the game to get the most points. I played at my husband's insistence b/c I just wasn't feeling like it, but I did anyway. Got 2nd in points! heart
April - I played a whole bunch of Haba/Family Pastimes/Peacable Kingdom games with my kiddos over the month so I figured that I'd count these here. Probably the one I really didn't feel like playing but did was Stone Soup, but it was a pretty good matching game so we did end up enjoying ourselves.
May -My daughter is loving Best Treehouse Ever and seems to ask for it everyday during her brother's naptime. I've played the basic rules at least 5x this month, probably closer to 12x or 15x.
June - We have another family come over for party games once a week or so. We get to try out some of our party games this way. This time they brought some games including Farkle and Uno Attack. These definitely aren't usually my kinds of games, but we went with it and had a lot of fun. I managed to win at Farkle Star Wars and really had a lot of laughs losing Uno Attack!

12. What do you want to be when you grow up? ***
I figure that I was a pretty normal child who went through some phases about what I wanted to be...veterinarian, detective, etc. Here's some games that mirror that journey.

January - Zooloretto - Enjoyable zoo building game, I've even managed to play this 2x with my 5yo daughter!
February - Sherlock Holmes: Consulting Detective - Case 3 - We use the map from the old edition because it is bigger, but we play with the writings and "newspapers" and directory of the new Ystari edition. We did great with Case 1, okay with Case 2, but we definitely didn't get the right answer for Case 3 - we got a lot of the answers partially correct, and we went to all of the locations that Holmes visited, but we definitely felt the material given didn't lead to answer given in the book. I've heard a lot of people feel this case isn't one of the better ones so I guess I'm okay with not getting it 100% right. Slightly irritated that the publisher didn't bother to playtest these and fix original problems or make sure the translation of the assistants on the back was translated from the French section abbreviations.
March - We played Pastiche2x because it was so relaxing and enjoyable! It's artsy and sophisticated, but in a way that has minimal clunky rules. I won both times we played. It's an enjoyable mix of colors. heart
April - We played Expedition: Northwest Passage and I have to say that I really don't know what to think about it. Part of me thinks that it is impossible and that the game designers are laughing at my ill-conceived attempts to reach the Northwest Passage and then get back to Greenland in 10 turns. We didn't even get 1/2 way there and I still didn't make it back. It does have a very cool freeze/thaw mechanic and the ability to deploy a dogsled. The worker placement part is kind of ridiculous though. I'm honestly not sure if I'll keep this one as unless I'm reading the rules wrong somewhere (I read them 3x), the likelihood of scoring well at all is a pipe dream.
May - We played that easier family game of Flash Point: Fire Rescue last night because it was my first play of this. Chris and I barely won. We manages to save 4 ladies, 2 guys, and a cat. We would have lost if one more victim had died, and the house was aflame. That game is really intense!
June - I wanted to be a master gardner - A game that I have that is exactly that theme is - Takenoko. I had a friend over who really wanted to give this a try. I had played it several times, but I was totally willing to play again with 3 people. It is a very cute game with great components. Since I was teaching I didn't add in the Chibi expansion. I even lent it to her because she liked it so much. This is the first time I've lent anyone a board game from my collection so I'm being super good here.
