Played HIS quite a few times already, would like to try out this sequel at least once.

One of these years it'll end up getting enough votes...

This entry is long. It covers my history with this game and the four tournament games I played at WBC this year.

Playing in this and the HIS tournament was really one of the top highlights of my con this year. The games were great but I met some really interesting people that I'll be looking forward to seeing for the years to come. I'm reading this now and just wanted to give one more shout out to Garreth who was super cool and was always trying to get me to play NPW, HIS, and just open game. I promise next year I'll be more prepared for the long knarly stuff!

Many years ago I was stuck in an absurdly long Titan game in the back of the Lampeter room at the Host. All of a sudden as all of these guys show up and start playing this game called The Napoleonic Wars. The main difference I noticed between their game and my game was that they seemed to be having A LOT of fun and I was only having a little bit of fun playing Titan forever. I made it a point to pick up Napoleonic Wars a year or so later. Boy, had I bitten off more than I could chew. I understood certain aspects of the game but not enough to be able to teach a group of people to play with me. So I bought Wellington which seemed simpler. I was able to get into Wellington more but was still confused. After an open game at WBC like 4 years ago, decided I might not be smart enough to play it.

Year after year I would always check in on the Napoleonic Wars tournament, read the report and event preview. Then I noticed even more people playing Here I Stand and Virgin Queen, FOR LIKE DAYS AT A TIME, who were also having a really good time. So I followed those tournaments too. I even tried reading the rules to HIS and felt even more overwhelmed.

So a couple months ago, I decided to break out Wellington and was determined to learn it to play at WBC. Suddenly this was an easy game to pick up. The rule set just made sense, finally. But my girlfriend didn't like the look of the game or the idea that it was just straight combat. To be honest, I agree with her, but loved the mechanics, that there was a serious table talk element and that I got to roll so many dice. So I turned to VQ which seemed might be simpler than HIS and would be more appealing to both of us. The board was prettier and there was more than just combat going on.

VQ was still super complicated but I could eventually play it. Unfortunately my girlfriend just wasn't interested. I got through a test sort of 2 player game with my buddy from work and we did feel like we played it. It took us 5 hours to get through one turn, but we played it.

So, we arrive to WBC 2016. VQ is up against Advanced Civ on Sunday - my team game (remember the long game thing). I was up in the air about what to do. Play this complicated game I don't know how to play, or fulfill my obligation to my team? Civ would be offered again but did conflict with some other stuff Wednesday. I decided to go to the VQ demo and make a call. Civ Wednesday wouldn't be the worst thing.

Five minutes into the demo I made my choice. Not only was there a crowd of 15 other newbies but the gm, Mike, was just really a good guy and clearly wanted new players to try the game. He was certain that the vets would help anyone that was new. It also appeared that among new players I sort of knew what I was doing and I came with my own copy of the rules so I could look stuff up without bogging things down.

HEAT 1, Sunday 12pm

I was super lucky to be seated at the table with Phil, who ended up becoming a good buddy. He realized there was four new players at our table and volunteered to take France, a particularly difficult nation to play. I ended up with England so I was seated next to France. Phil helped everyone at the table with anything they needed. He helped me with some basic strategies about playing England like always marrying Elizabeth to Leicester then jilting him to get cards. Phil answered all questions as best as he could and seemed to know the game very well. He was also frankly, a riot. He was constantly making jokes and telling stories. Phil’s coaching was really too good and I ended up winning a military auto victory after gaining control of Portugal, taking Cadiz, then declaring war on the protestant and taking Edinburgh. I think my luck was good, but that game was such a blur.

HEAT 2, Sunday 6pm

I was already in the semis but with civ already 6 hours underway and nothing else to do, I decided to play again in the 6pm heat. I got seated next to Phil again playing the HRE but this time I was playing France having got last choice. I was ok with this, like I said I was already in the Semis. Early on I got lucky maxing out on the marriage table with one of Phil’s royals and wedding festivities. Then I think I went exploring and got some points and treasure out of that. On the last turn I started to aggressively counter the protestant hold of religious spaces to prevent rebellions in France and spring deployed to avoid the HRE from advancing in to France. Those along with some amazing patronage rolls got the win for my second heat.

SEMIS, Monday 9am

So I rushed home to be able to wake up and make the semis at 9am. So, not only am I in the semis, I’m the top seed. With first choice of power I pick what’s been working for me and choose the England again. Guess who I’m sitting next to. Phil, again. A wild thing happened early in this game. I had the Spanish Treasure Fleet card on the first turn and positioned Drake to get a free piracy attempt. Now, I know that this is a little riskier than normal piracy and there is a small chance that Drake could be killed…and he also already has a treasure and colony in tow. The Spanish player rolls two hits. Now I get to swing back with four dice, just needing a single five or six to prevent the loss of Drake and everything else…I rolled 1s and 2s. Drake is dead on turn one.

I was still able to pirate with another sea captain which netted some cards and vps. I was also able to circumnavigate with the experienced sailor card. My scientist and artist were also able to yield three vps total. While I was off pirating, I also got three or four points for the dutch rebellion and enterprise of England card. The card that activates Scotland also came up and the protestant wiffed on the roll and I must have rolled a six or something to get another two points. On the last turn I declared war on France but wasn’t able to invade since Phil committed his forces to preventing a seaborn invasion while he let Metz slip away to the HRE. With all my piracy points, vps for liz not marrying, circumnavigation, patronage, Scotland, etc. - I was able to get enough points for another win, making me top seed going into the finals which were later that day.

Phil's score wasn't enough to make the final but he was the assistant GM for Napoleonic Wars later that evening. He invited me to join him for dinner and I accepted. All of the sit down places opened at four and we were 20 minutes too soon, so we hung out on his balcony while I drank a beer and we chatted with the mountain as a backdrop. We talked a bunch about games and how he go into them during when he was in middle school during the 60s. Sounds like a lot of us really, he found some hex-counter wargames, wanted to figure them out, recruited a friend to help him. It seems he only plays what I would consider long stuff, at least at the con. He actually called them social games, which I have to agree with. When you play these long multi-player games, you need to get people to like you so they’re less likely to do bad things to you and are willing to help you. If you’re a jerk, uncooperative, or just freak out when someone hurts your position but helps their's, people are more likely not to take your side when you need help or they have to make a choice about who to screw. We continued to talk and Phil had some great stories to listen to. That was the fanciest meal I had all week and I followed Phil’s lead in ordering a samboucca…he said it would help me loosen up for the final.

FINAL, Monday 6pm

So now I’m in the final. I already felt out of my league but now I’m playing the lead play tester Justin, the VQ GM Mike, the HIS GM Jeff, Chris who I didn’t know beforehand but is a knarly gamer and won the War of the Ring tournament which was his team game, and Seth who was also inexperienced in VQ but had played a bit of HIS previously.

I wasn’t able to get away with some of the things I had before. Jeff knew how to play Spain and defend against some of the easy ways for the English to get points. He built a fortress in the new world and popped a Jesuit and informant on me pretty quickly. He used his informant to kill Leicester who was bewed to Liz that turn. The days of me jilting him every turn were gone, as were my chances of increasing the size of my hand. I was also warned by Justin to not always play the Virgin Queen home card and instead play Wallinsgham to defend against espionage attempts. I sort of tried to throw folks off about the home cards but I regret not aggressively jilting then defending against informants with my CPs.

On the perennial last turn I was physically and mentally exhausted and it seemed like Spain would win who had a lead in Catholic spaces and points from some other stuff…I forget his point engine other than the flipped spaces. We weren’t able to get organized in the diplomacy phase to mount a coordinated take down. I realize now I probably could have offered an alliance to France, then tried to march on the Iberian and defend my home spaces with my now large navy. In either case, I was spent and it seemed I would be getting a plaque no matter what.

My assumption was correct and I finished third behind the 2nd place Ottomans (Chris) and winner, Spain (Jeff, congrats again Jeff!). I spent about 24 hours playing Virgin Queen over two days and managed to get a plaque before the con proper even started. This was an unprecedented feat for me. I felt like the pressure was off for the week and could relax a bit.

I was joined at the bar after the final by Chris and Rob – another lead play tester who I had a bunch of fun playing in the second heat and semis. Just a real fun person to play against. He ended up winning the HIS tournament, congrats Rob! Had a good time closing down the bar with those guys.

I went back to my condo and with nothing planned until late the next day and slept for 10 hours.

Unique and pretty awesome (imho) card driven game about the wars of religion in the 16th century. 2-6 players.

If we choose to play the 4-turn so-called 'Armada' scenario (tournament scenario), we should be able to finish it.

See you all the 22nd!

This may be a long shot, but I wanted to see if there might be enough interest in the guild for a 6-player PBEM game of Virgin Queen.
This really is a fantastic game and if shrewd back stabbing power politics and military conquest is your forte, then this game is for you.

Format: VASSAL and ACTS (Automated Card Tracking System http://acts.warhorsesim.com/) with DROPBOX

Teach? Yes! This would be learning game friendly!

Expertise: About 10 games under my belt, 8 PBEM and 2 FtF.

I know I already have ONE interested guildie. What do you say y'all? I would be happy to run the game on ACTS and deal with Vassal.
