Although the game focus on the military, political and religious conflicts within Europe during the reigns of Elizabeth I of England and Philip II of Spain we will focus on

Elisabeth I
Queen of England and Ireland

Reign:
17 November 1558 – 24 March 1603
Coronation: 15 January 1559
House: Tudor
Born: 7 September 1533 - Palace of Placentia, Greenwich, England
Died: 24 March 1603 (aged 69) - Richmond Palace, Surrey, England

Elizabeth I was Queen of England and Ireland from 17 November 1558 until her death. Sometimes called The Virgin Queen, Gloriana or Good Queen Bess, the childless Elizabeth was the fifth and last monarch of the Tudor dynasty.

Elizabeth was the daughter of Henry VIII by second wife, Anne Boleyn, who was executed two and a half years after Elizabeth's birth. Anne's marriage to Henry VIII was annulled, and Elizabeth was declared illegitimate. Her half-brother, Edward VI, ruled until his death in 1553, bequeathing the crown to Lady Jane Grey and ignoring the claims of his two half-sisters, Elizabeth and the Roman Catholic Mary, in spite of statute law to the contrary. Edward's will was set aside and Mary became queen, deposing Lady Jane Grey. During Mary's reign, Elizabeth was imprisoned for nearly a year on suspicion of supporting Protestant rebels.

In 1558, Elizabeth succeeded her half-sister to the throne and set out to rule by good counsel. She depended heavily on a group of trusted advisers, led by William Cecil, Baron Burghley. One of her first actions as queen was the establishment of an English Protestant church, of which she became the Supreme Governor. This Elizabethan Religious Settlement was to evolve into the Church of England. It was expected that Elizabeth would marry and produce an heir to continue the Tudor line. She never did, despite numerous courtships. As she grew older, Elizabeth became famous for her virginity. A cult grew around her which was celebrated in the portraits, pageants, and literature of the day.

In religion she was relatively tolerant and avoided systematic persecution. After 1570, when the pope declared her illegitimate and released her subjects from obedience to her, several conspiracies threatened her life, all of which were defeated with the help of her ministers' secret service. Elizabeth was cautious in foreign affairs, manoeuvring between the major powers of France and Spain. She only half-heartedly supported a number of ineffective, poorly resourced military campaigns in the Netherlands, France, and Ireland. By the mid-1580s, England could no longer avoid war with Spain. England's defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588 associated Elizabeth with one of the greatest military victories in English history.

I'm not a wargamer, and I never will be, but I do enjoy plenty of games with conflict and direct player interaction and I do occasionally enjoy an epically long thematic romp.

My problems with Virgin Queen are simply mechanical.

From my own Comment about the game: "Interesting game, but too too long and prone to wild swings of luck via cards and dice. You don't roll enough dice for the luck to necessarily even out over time, not to mention some die rolls are way, way more important than others and that could be when you hit your 5's and 6's, when you don't desperately need them.

A perfect example of "too long for what it is", about 2-3 hours worth of game drawn out into 10+ hours. And that's the SHORT game. Sheesh."

From someone else who put it much better:

"You have a huge deck that gets reshuffled every turn. Over the course of a game, the luck-of-the-draw is not going to balance out, and wild swings in fortune that have nothing to do with player skill will result. The difference between an average draw (2-3CP cards with events that don't help you) and pulling some of the 5CP events that do help you is massive. If each player had a deck that wasn't reshuffled, at least you would know that a bad turn is probably going to be followed by a good turn. As is, you can draw crap all the way through the 8-16 hour game and never get a great hand of cards.

This is the primary game killer, the main things you do in VQ (besides playing screw-you events on other people that were gifted to you via card draw) are marriages, patronage, assassinations, diplomatic influence, and piracy. These give you VP for essentially zero risk, assuming you can roll dice well. Some players also get VP as a bonus for not doing anything (e.g. French Paris VP, Elizabeth Virgin VP). All of these things are incredibly boring. Military campaigns, while possible, are very rarely going to be worth the effort if you look at VP/risk versus card expenditure. Keep in mind that a military adventure will probably also get you assassinated shortly after you leave your home territory. With military action (and thus war between the major powers) being the least useful thing to do, what real diplomacy is there to have?

So, to summarize: Draw your random cards, play the events that screw other people. Whine/complain/lie to get the other players to screw everyone else instead of you. Marry your royal off, roll dice well. Patronize an artist, roll dice well. Conduct piracy, roll dice well. Drop some points on diplomatic influence, roll dice well. Conduct an assassination, you don't even have to roll well. There are some spins on this for each power (e.g. if France, park 4 guys in Paris so you get your Paris VP, if England, don't get Liz married), but unlike HIS, each power is not all that unique; while the HRE does marriages, the Ottomans do Piracy - call it what you will, but it is still 'spent some CP, rolled the dice for VP')."

And that's pretty much it. It feels like 10 hours (if you're playing the short game!) of a lot of negotiation and downtime and take-that and randomness and it all comes down to hitting some 5's and 6's on a handful of important die rolls.

I still look forward to trying out Here I Stand, which I hear is a bit more mechanically sound, and I'm not against dice in principle but I felt like they are too important in VQ by far.

I also played ZhanGuo which was an interesting game, but I have some balance concerns so I might start houseruling it a bit.

If we do end up with 6 people, I'd love to try out Virgin Queen. Mostly because we've been playing HIS a lot recently and I'd really like to know how this sequel is different.

I don't actually own a copy, though, but I imagine someone attending does?

I haven’t posted much lately about played games. Not only because I haven’t played that many but also because I have been travelling and busy. This weekend has started a four day gaming spree though continuing today and tomorrow.

A group of 6 of us had decided to spend International TableTop Day inside being pointed at by hipster parents with their children on a playground outside the building where we had spent three hours setting up and going through the rules of:

Before we spent the next seven hours playing two turns of the tournament scenario (three new players and three who had played a learning game before). Having tried the game helped immensely this time around and I was able to squeeze in a surprise win through a 5-point lead for the Protestants at the end of Turn 4. More out of luck than clever play really as Spain and France definitely should have paid more attention. We now have a group of 9 people who have played it and would like to play again so it looks like it might actually be possible to get this amazing monster to the table again. One of my favourite games so far.

Sunday I promised to play a bit with a friend and a couple of others also joined in for some of these:

My friend wanted to try his Blue Moon Legends and my Red7 and I wanted to try a couple of my so far unplayed games: Goa and Potato Man. Blue Moon was crap in my opinion, Red7 is beginning to shine for me now after a couple of games, especially after I decided to use the advanced rule of getting a card when playing a card to the canvas that is higher than the amount of cards in your palette. I’d been looking for Goa for months and finally got a copy two weeks ago and it was just as good as expected. I really like the beauty of the classic euro designs. Potato Man on the other hand was a dud. Didn’t care for it and cannot see myself keeping it.

Over Easter, I visited a friend and some of his friends with their families in Salamanca. Apart from lots of good food and wine, we also played:

2 x Kobayakawa with the kids was a blast so I left it down there with them. Lewis & Clark I had looked at at Essen in 2013 but never got to play till now. I don’t need to own it. Not fond of the racing game in it and it didn’t feel thematic at all to me. I didn’t expect to like Tiny Epic Kingdoms but was surprised to find it ok. Not something I’d ask to play but if others wanted it I could see myself playing it again. Not something to buy though. I’m no fan of Werewolf so 3 games of it is more than enough for me for a very long time…

After a couple of weeks of preparing for it I got 5 others and me together on Saturday to play these

Or rather, we got together to play Virgin Queen and then played a fun game of Kobayakawa afterwards to ease the pain. We started setting up VQ and went through some rules at noon, started playing at 1.35 and played till 9.30 with a break for dinner. We got two turns out of seven in... This is a beast to learn. We had all watched at least part of the excellent two hour video but still had to look up - or try to look up - everything. First turn took 3 1/2 hours. The following two nights I dreamt of fleets, keys, rebellions etc. But even despite the pain to learn the game, everyone is keen to play again and we made plans to do so on Int. TableTop Day in April.

Yesterday evening I played the first boardgame with my new girlfriend. She liked it. I have a winner!
