Acquisitions:
I had read something recently about Blue Moon being out of print. I had put acquiring all the decks off for far too long. I managed to chase down everything I was missing on the cheap and a friend had duplicates he gave me for free. It will hit the table soon me thinks.
Plays:
Dominant Species - x1 with 3p - Finally dispelled my own negative illusions about 3p and scores were within 20 points. A tight, tense game, though DS remains VERY long.
The Castles of Burgundy - x1 with 3p - I'm not sure how I feel about the 3p game yet. I still really love the system, as long as it is.
Blue Moon City - x1 with 3p - Still an old favorite that plays out in 30 minutes.
Martian Dice - x1 with 4p - Still fun.
Star Trek [Deck Building Game]: The Next Generation - The Next Phase - x1 with 3p - I'm surprisingly still finding new tactics; ones that can help slow other, more fortunate players down, and this time granting me the win.

When I think of absurd value for money this springs instantly to mind. At under $10 you get 38 games, 22 by Sackson himself, and most of them playable with dice, paper, cards, checkers, whatever.
Admittedly not every game is a winner, but there are some real gems in here covering all corners of the spectrum, and at around 26c per game it seems churlish to grumble.
Thoughts from the man Sackson himself too! So bargaintastic it's perilously close to theft...

Fascinating as it is to know that we're Latvian dentists who enjoy geocaching and playing the ukelele, BGG is about games, and so are some of our microbadges. Matt's by far the most game-focused here, with 59% of his badges actually devoted to games. But more than half of us don't even have enough game badges to represent a Top Ten.
What's up with that? Do you have microbadges for your favorite games? If not, is it because you don't have stable favorites, because you like obscure games that have no microbadges, because the rest of the site is about games and you'd rather spend your microbadges on more personal stuff, or what?
I was also surprised to note that seven of us (three of whom have only one other game-related badge) have the Monopoly microbadge. Is there an underground Monopoly renaissance among the Meatballs? Is this the fallout from some prank? What gives?

A classic book by Sid Sackson!
Ex-Library copy, has that mylar stuff covering the dust jacket, some staining from the tape holding the dust jacket on, and the name of the library cut off of the fly leaf. Still has the library pocket!
Sweetener: Card Games Around the World, another Sackson classic.
Since I'd like to mail these media mail, I'll only ship these to the lower 48 states. I once had a book take 2 months from Hawaii.

One obvious number is "What's your G-index for games played?"
In other words, sort your games played from most to least and stop when the position # is > than games played.
We talked about that on Mikko and my blogs (as H-index). Depending on how you group expansions, etc, my H-index for games played is 34 (meaning, I've played at least 34 games 34 times each). Obviously this hurts if you mainly play long games...

$3, Browser's Bookstore (Corvallis, OR), edition pictured.
Now, I know, a used book store isn't the traditional definition of a thrift store. But bear with me, as I have an unusual experience to share about this *specific* store. Plus, come on, it's Sackson's book.
This particular store opened about, oh... I want to say ten years ago, but maybe more. It's pretty standard for a used book store in a lot of ways... Stacks of books, a little cramped in places, and just a hint of that twistiness in the extremities that makes it seem like the store might be bigger inside than out. The staff is nice, they give good credit for trade-ins, and they seem to have weird stuff now and then.
Now, the weirdness: For some strange reason, this store has an uncanny ability to, if I've been looking for a non-fiction book for more than about six months, suddenly have it somewhere easy to find when I walk in. Sometimes it's been there for a while and I've just overlooked it, sometimes it just came in that day, but... once that six-month search comes up, I can be nearly assured that if I go to this store, I'll find my book.
I first noticed this back in 2003, looking for a copy of Gödel, Escher, Bach. Six months of looking in all the used book stores and thrift stores in the area, walk into this one, suddenly it's right there on top of one of the shelves, plainly displayed. It's happened a few times after that, too... enough times for me to make an excuse to drop in that one *extra* time when a search is going on too long.
Well, I've been looking for a copy of Gamut of Games for six months now...
So I guess my next non-fic quest is going to be either Sackson's Card Games Around the World or Dr. Knizia's Dice Games Properly Explained. Let's see if the pattern holds up, in April.

What Games Are There?
There are currently 57 different games you can play on Yucata. The most well known BGG-type ones are probably:
Balloon Cup Campaign Manager 2008 Carcassonne H&G Famiglia Fearsome Floors Hey, that's my fish Pompeii Roll through the Ages Saint Petersburg Stone Age Thurn and Taxis Yspahan
There are new games being slowly added - Famiglia was just added a week ago.

I've often used GamesSurplus to order German games that haven't been released in the US yet. For Euro's, they're as price competitive as anyone. They don't have free shipping but they do have a list of games which if purchased let your entire order ship free. They only seem to update their site once a week (very last Saturday night or early Sunday morning) unless a huge shipment comes in for them. I've only had one problem with them once on a double billing issue that they resolved promptly and courteously.

As last time, there will be a large and varied selection of games from our collections and other sources, including some new ones.
However, if there are any games released at or since Essen 2010, that you would particularly like to play, please PM me, and we'll see what we can do...

Haven't had much time or money to thrift lately. Did have a $10 credit to the GW though. So we walked over this evening to see if we could make use of it. I found this classic book that I've heard mentioned here before. $2.99 at 82nd GW.

This is not about me, but about my girlfriend.
Look in this here list and every game there is something she's hated before she liked it.
I have a theory. Gamers / boardgamegeeks can tell faster if they like a game. Maybe 1-3 games. Non-gamers have a higher Game Affinity Measurement Equilibrium - G.A.M.E.® (oh yeah, see what I did there?) and have to play games more before they can really know if they really like it or not.
Of course, this is on average. There are those among the washed non-BGG masses that are of above average G.A.M.E. and can properly control their boardgaming emotions enough to see beyond bad luck and a rough game session. You can tell them apart from the others because even though they lost, they want to play that again. Or maybe they're just competitive.
