My game group met early again this week, trying out another new venue, but this time we were down to three players. We played a couple of fast games of Medici, in the very pretty new Grail Games edition. I got beaten badly. I liked the game, but I much prefer Ra for Knizia auction action.

Then I played as Django in a session of Colt Express. Another cool game where I did badly!

We wrapped up with a play of Cthulhu Gloom, where I just edged out the second most miserable family.

I played another solo session of Luna this week. I got truly slaughtered in this one, despite my respectable score of 78, since the "opponent" racked up 100 points!

Prp and I played a couple more games of Summoner Wars with new Second Summoners decks. She continued to play Little Meda's Tea Party while I started to explore the new Sand Goblins. First I played with Scraven's base deck. In this session, Prp was pleased to go second, and to have two walls in her starting hand. Unbeknownst to her, I had Dinky in my starting hand. I played aggressively, keeping Scraven towards the middle of the board to maximize Esteemed Leader opportunities for getting at Meda and Nanny. By the fourth or fifth turn, my commons were mostly gone, and I had enough magic to summon Dinky. Nanny was already nearly down, so when Dinky came out (with Strong Wind to boot), Meda was in the grips of justified terror. It took no time at all to corner and bring her down.

Our second game was an even faster victory for the Sand Goblins. The deck was Scraven's Sand Marines with Cyrus, Sand Drake, Stink, Bombers, Hunters, and more Hunters (from Sand Cloaks). In the opening turns, I focused on Esteemed Leadership of the Hunters and managed to kill several Filth commons and Nanny (thanks in large measure to a Barrage)! Meda was a little too far forward, so that when I summoned Cyrus the next turn (with four of my commons in play), it was over in a blink. Next time, we swap decks, and I'll see if I can rock the Tea Party.

Epic Spell Wars of the Battle Wizards continues to be fun at my place. I beat Prp in a shutout for the first time ever (i.e. two consecutive bouts to wrap the match). We did talk my wife into playing a match with us, and for such a reluctant player, she sure seemed to have a good time. Prp won that one, although we each scored a token.

I took Cubeo along on a long bike ride with Prp Saturday, so that we could play when we stopped for lunch. We each won one game, playing defense. It seems like careful defensive play--adding and moving, but never merging--may be unbeatable here. I don't want to declare this game solved, but for now we're rating it as "second-player advantage."

The Week ended with some BattleLore, where I finally scored a Daqan victory over the Undead! Prp's Waiqar (in "Swamp of Corruption") seized one of my banners at the outset and was leading for the opening turns, getting 3 VP to my 2, but eventually I managed to turn the tide. She had one turn where she got only 1 VP, and for the last two turns of the game, I got 4 VP each turn, holding all three of the banners and getting my extra point for dominating the center section (in "the Blind Muir Forest").

Another play with the new version. This time, to be honest, the players had some quibbles with the artwork. Two of the commodity suits (grain & spices) are a little close in color, but I think still better than earlier editions of this famous game. The perimeter score track is well-marked at the 5-point increments, but the individual points between are really subtle. Not a problem, but just a quibble.

Chris & Jen pointed out that this was perhaps the first eurogame I introduced them to...back in 2002! Now here we were, 14 years later, playing the same title as my unofficial (and temporary) send-off from the group.

Compared to the previous week, it showed the effect of playing with people who know the game. Very sharky, and it was all I could do to eke out a 3rd place position after being in last for the first two scoring rounds. Marcin was way out in front, and not by being lucky. Just better bidding.

The new release of this game finally makes it enjoyable on the table top. The old versions looked old and gross, so I mostly played it on the app. I do love this pure auction classic.

This reprint looks amazing! I haven't played the base game but I did get a run down at the BGG hot room (at 11:45 PM). I love that you auction your victory points. With the updated artwork and clear streamlined design this game feels much more approachable. I still don't have enough info to pull the trigger but I know it's something I'm interested in.

Heat #1: 9am Monday. I came in third, based on a tiebreaker, two points out of first place. You need a win to advance in this event, so off to heat #2.

Heat #2: Thursday. The rest of the table was just schooled by eventual winner Sue Cornett as she dominated the whole time and won by 36 points.

At this point, I decided I would pass on heat #3 and find something else to do.

This was my good experience with Kickstarter. I've owned and loved Medici for almost 20 years already. I've owned a couple versions, and still own the one I think is best (Amigo's from the 90s). So why did I kickstart this new version?

In the first place, I don't mind owning two copies of an all-time favorite game, especially two different versions. Second, I wanted to see publisher Grail Games succeed in bringing out a nicer edition of the game to a new, wider(?) audience. Third, I just like Grail Games as a company, the guy behind it and the games he's producing.

So why just 4 stars? It's not for the game production, which is excellent. Yes, there are two commodities, that are a LITTLE close in color/artwork, but we never had any difficulty telling them apart. It's SO much clearer, attractive, and functional than Rio Grande's earlier edition. No, the only reason I shave off a 5th star is because this was a play with three others who were completely new to the game...and pure auction games can be rough the first time. They all liked it, and it played so smooth, but it's tricky to properly evaluate bids when you've never played the game before. (I think Medici's once-around auctions even increase that degree-of-difficulty.)

It's still great, though. I think we got through rules and a complete play in 45 minutes. So just play it, figure out what you would do different, and play it again!

My wife and I received our new copy of Medici the past week and tried out the two player game a few times. The biggest difference between the 2 player game and higher player counts is that you have an additional 2 cargo slots(7 instead of 5). I figured at 2 players the game would suffer and it did. I still enjoy Medici, but will only play at 4 or more players.
I was also able to get two "new to me" games played this week, Dutch Blitzand Guillotine. Dutch Blitz was a big success. My wife and I played with my parents and all 4 of us agreed that this game needs to be in our regular rotation.
Guillotine was a modest hit. My mother enjoyed it alot(she won) and the rest of us said we would play it again, but I for one will probably never request it.
I played a few solo games of The Game and introduced friends to Deep Sea Adventure as well this week.

Why aren't you PLAYING a game?
mbmbmbmbmb
This was the very last game I bought at The KAHN: the venerable (and now beautifully reskined) Medici. It is so very clean and neat in all ways now: the auction system is perfected here. It plays from 2 to 6 (the new version gives you a valid 2-player game now) and you can teach it in just a few minutes. So it's great as a super-filler auction game that I'm very happy to finally own. Played it once and look forward to additional filler-moment plays!

Looks like I've managed to play 4 things that I'd not played for at least two years. (I acknowledge that the restriction is quite arbitrary; but I might as well be consistent.)

Medici -- (1 this month; 1 play 8 years ago) _7_
(images by AlPacino11 & petegrey)

I liked this a lot better than I'd remembered. It still seemed really random to me: but I suspect a lot of that is our (communal) lack of experience. We've a weak sense of what are sure bets and what are longshots: so I expect my unease is the result of a (falsely described) "longshot" paying out, rather than something truly wrong.
It was definitely more fun with 5 (this play) than the preceding play with 3. If I were to play again, I think I'd aim for a larger count, rather than a smaller.

King's Breakfast -- (1 this month; lots 5+ years ago) _6⅓_
(images by yayforme & Matthias_K)

This is fluffy and pleasant. And it worked nicely with the lunch gang. I'm not confident it'll ever be something I'll choose over other possibilities. But as an occasional (and tremendously easily explained) diversion, it's a fine candidate.

Schnapsen -- (4 this month; 4 plays 4+ years ago) _7⅔_
(images by EndersGame & judoka)

Many thanks to John for introducing this to me. Managed to drag it out with son #2 - and, fortunately, he was amused. (In fact, it's very much his current gaming aesthetic: a minimalist little game with a bunch of interestingly textured decisions, and enough randomness that one can claim "bad breaks" if things go belly up.) We really enjoyed it.

Ticket to Ride: Europe -- (1 this month; 5 plays 31 months ago) _7⅓_
(images by MarkKaufmann & Sentieiro)

This is a great version of the game when playing with my Mom. She prefers it when we don't block one another gratuitously (and, yeah; the difference between gratuitous and necessary blocking is more than occasionally invisible - so it's a hard rule to hit cleanly.) The stations here permit one to survive the occasionally block - so there's less utility in blocking, and less expectation that a block is anything but innocent. In any event, we played cheerfully; and it was generally enjoyed.

Thanks again to my youngsters, the BAP attenders, the Monday Lunch folk, and the Wednesday Night gang for some great game experiences.

We walked around a bit and decided to demo this classic reprint. It was the fully pimped out Kickstarter edition, and the updates were definitely a vast improvement over the original game.

I enjoyed it. I'd like to play a full game (3 rounds) instead of a demo game (1 round), but I could see myself getting a decent amount of play out of it. I ended with 1 of every color and a fair amount of points, so I got the 2nd value bonus and either 1st or 2nd in every color except blue. I did end up several points back in 2nd place though, so my strategy definitely wasn't the best.

On Monday morning I had two options: (1) Enter the 18xx semis, where I could vie for the coveted sand plaque, or (2) Enter the first heats of Medici and crayon rails. Since Medici is my favorite game, and I always look forward to crayon rails, that's the option I chose. If I could win my crayon rails game, that would qualify me for the semis and I could skip Heat 2 on Tuesday evening, which would allow me to enter several other events I wanted to play in. I'm not someone who prefers to focus exclusively on a few events at WBC; I like to try a number different events. And as this example demonstrates, selecting my schedule is like an operations research problem!

This Medici game was a blowout, as it turns out. Cliff Ackman and I were both going after gray cards, and I let him get some mediocre grays early, figuring I could pay a little more for better grays later. Unfortunately, the better grays never showed up; they were among the cards removed from the deck at the start of the voyage. Cliff won with a score of 151, ahead of Chris Gnech at 115, Sam Wolff at 91, and me in 4th place with 90. It was a remarkable victory.

I had several more chances to play Medici at WBC, but as it turns out they all conflicted with other events so this was my only play. I'm glad I was able to contribute to the player count for the event.

It's a classic that's up for preview and I've not played it.

I played in the second heat and won!

And was doing good in the semifinals and started losing that lead in turn two. This one guy was going to get his max cloth for super cheap, so I switched colors! I never recovered, but if I let him take that lot for a reasonably cheap price, he would have got the win locked up on turn two

So no final for me
