A great concept game. The designer wanted to come up with a game that was easy for humans to play but hard for computers. I guess when your main focus it something like that, we cannot blame the designer if the game is not super-fun

BTW the game was not intended to be "easy for humans" but rather easier for humans than computers, i.e. the opposite of chess. It's still quite interestingly challenging for humans too, which was also intended!

Unless by "easy for humans" you mean easy to learn the rules, as opposed to easy to play well. But then chess and many other games are "easy for humans" in that sense.

A new breed of abstract, as deep as chess but without the rote learning of strategies and tactics, they say.

Why oh why didn't they make the proper edition easier to differentiate pieces?

I'm provisionally taking Arimaa because it seems more interesting to me right now, even though I've not played it yet, and have played and once enjoyed Stone Age, but it was a game I quickly grew tired of and it holds pretty much no appeal to me anymore.

FWIW, I spent fifteen or twenty minutes at the Arimaa site last night and learned how to play. Also learned how to pronounce the name of the game (I would've thought the last syllable was stressed due to the double letter, but I guess it's not).

What a compliment! That would be like me voting for caviar over pizza on the basis of some well-written food column, even though I personally think pizza tastes better. (In all honesty, I would vote for pizza no matter what anyone wrote on the subject of caviar.) I almost feel guilty for skewing the vote here. Indeed, I only contributed to the thread at all because Patrick's comment made me hope he could be persuadable. If not for his justification of his vote, I would never have tried to stand in the way of a eurogame winning a popularity contest over an abstract.

The pronunciation chosen by Omar Syed is especially ironic given that the spelling of Arimaa is based on the name of his son Aamir. In "Aamir", the first vowel sound is both long and accented; for consistency the last vowel sound in "Arimaa" should be be long and accented. The fact that it isn't goes to show that Omar doesn't understand why his own son's name is spelled the way it is spelled.

I've been playing this again recently. It's wonderful through having a nice ebb and flow of gameplay, the position of every piece on the board becomes relevant in any reasonably close game. The game has good clarity while being deep and (so far) being strategically open.

It also offers the opportunity to get in on the ground floor of a new lifestyle abstract. The opponents are also fairly new to the game and frequently developing their level of play. The level of play is noticeably different year on year. Put some time in now and you might find yourself World Champion of what will become a very long lasting abstract.

This has been one of the most important reasons I've come to prefer modern abstracts to the classics: the more level playing field among my opponents. Both of my brothers studied Chess, and I don't stand a chance against them.

The game itself isn't important. Spending time intellectually jousting with likeminded folks is the real reason to game.

My six year old son and I spent several evenings playing Arimaa this month. He's caught on to some of the basic strategy of it and now is pretty crafty at stopping the advance of my rabbits while sneaking one of his rabbits down there.

The last time we played, he set up a pretty clever escort for his rabbit along one side of the board, using the elephant to move pieces out of the way and moving the escort group together. My response was distraction, as I kept advancing rabbits and tossing his other pieces into pits. It was a really fun game that was ended prematurely by a one year old grabbing several pieces off the board while we were washing our hands for dinner.

this one has a few things going for it that would suggest it should be.

Depth beyond a computer.

An online championship.

A commercial set finally.

And a fine strat book to help players along.

Oh, and it's a great game too.

I certainly think this game has merit to play extensively and there is a strat book out now, which some here suggest is a key to ingraining a game.

Arimaa can be played on a chess board. Designed in response to Deep Blue's victory, Arimma was created to be a nightmare for computers to play well, while still being easy enough for a child to learn. To deepen the pot, the creator has offered an award to any computer program that can beat the best human Arimaa players. So far, that competition is still running.

I think Arimaa will be around for a while. As far as abstracts go, it has that feel of "classic." This is a great opportunity to get in on a game's strategy while it's still young.

I've played Arimaa 9 plays this past year.

I wish could get this to the table more often, It's a fantastic game. It does require a dedicated opponent though.
