MATCH 13
Diplomacy vs. London

Remember how I kept mentioning Diplomacy as an exception? Here it is! Is it unlucky to be the 13 seed in match 13? Diplomacy was nominated by Philip and Ted, with an average placement value of 3.30.

Sure it takes a long time, but this is an awesome game! What I like about this over AGoT is that this is all open information with absolutely no randomness. Pure tactics/strategy and diplomacy. No leader cards that you exhaust either. I really want to play Diplomacy again.

Winning Bid: Jim Horvath (Killing Joke) @ $15 + Shipping

Will try to have a marketplace transaction set up within the next 48 hours; this may take slightly longer due to the large size of the box, which means a flat rate box likely won't work for it. I'll see what I can find.

Great idea for a list. I was apparently thinking of a different sort of "after play" though. You know, the type where people who used to be your friends never want to speak with you again. This game has a rep for that. Never happened to me though, honest.

There's a lot to admire about this game. It's been in print for decades, and with good reason. The part I like best is the social engineering aspect, although the deterministic combat is good, too.

But I don't enjoy it. I don't think I've played in over 10 years, and I'm just fine with that: I like my back knife-free.

Yeah, this is a very admirable game, and the tournament scene is also interesting - but I get very little enjoyment from playing, and thus haven't played the game in ten years or so either.

I pretty much took January off from thrifting to play Skyrim, so I have only been hitting the thrift stores since February. But I haven't found anything of interest at all anyways. Especially because the Goodwill near my house is barely stocking games these days. They must be sending most of the games to the new Goodwill they've just opened.

So this is my first game thrift of the year! Diplomacy, 1971 Canadian Bilingual House of Waddingtons edition. It is complete and in very good condition. There is very slight humidity (?) damage to the box, but really not that noticeable.

There also was a photocopied article from Games & Puzzles No. 21 on strategy in Diplomacy, and a photocopied set of rules from Eon edition of Cosmic Encounter.

I don't have an interest in playing Diplomacy. I think I bought it just because it has been so long since I thrifted a game. I am just going to try to trade it. The wooden bits are really nice.

Diplomacy, almost complete for ninety-nine cents at Thrift Town. Missing one black star and two blue stars (this copy has the plastic bits). And two of the seven copies of the conference maps (easy to photocopy two of those, eh?). Box shows some wear and staining, but game is in good shape.

YIou don't know what you are missing, but then thre are one or two players I know I would not want to play this with. It really does require the kind of gamer who would not take it personaly.

This is the first non-mainstream game that I owned, and I still have it, back from the mid 70's. It takes too much time and too many people to play it, I'm sure I haven't played it in over 30 years. And it seems unlikely to ever get played again, at least as a hard copy. Online is fine, but it's sad that the beautiful board and nice wooden blocks won't see the light of day. Anyway, it won't leave my collection!

See here for a bit more on my intro to gaming...

This is a very interesting game. I tried it one time. We were 7 players:
3 players that played it as a game,
1 had a really difficult time coping with different players trying to negotiate (played Germany)
1 had half the orders refused (ambigous orders/impossible orders etc)
1 were really naive
1 were tried to reenact som kind of crusade.

As you probably understand it wasn't the best group for the game, and I guess that I won't get enough people to play it (that can play the game), and have enough time, and would like to play other games if they are knocked out..

It has a map of Europe, doesn't it? And armies and fleets? And provinces and capital cities to be captured? How could it not be a wargame?

Actually, this has been sort of a fringe wargame forever. And it's nearly as old as older than about as old as the oldest Avalon Hill classics.

Not your average Diplomacy game. This includes double the normal number of wooden pieces. Also includes the beautiful mounted map that comes with the Waddington-Sanders edition. As a bonus, this also includes a set of plastic AH pieces and an AH mounted map board from the early 1980's. For the serious Diplomacy collector.

OK, from games that potentially take months (or years?) so something comparatively speedy. Diplomacy games played online can take ages, but even sitting around the table with a bunch of like minded folks will take you the best part of a day, possibly even more. Any stories you'd care to share?

We once had a regular game run 19 years, but I believe it was under 10 hours. We had one game that was something like 12 years in 11 hours. On the Youngstown map we would play for 14 or 15 hours, and it would never be finished. Five or six times Tom insisted we write down the position so we could come back and finish it, but we never did.

I'd think Diplomacy would lend itself very well to play-by-email. It was a popular play-by-MAIL game back 20 years ago.

It started almost 50 years ago--the first Dip 'zine was published in 1963.

Playing by mail usually about a month per turn--gives you time to think, gives you time to write, gives you time to scheme. The longest game I played lasted about 2-3 years. But you generally play several games at the same time.

And the PBM Dip is NOT replaced by PBEM--the art of "press" (public messages included in the game report) is completely missing from PBEM. Cleverly comedic press was a highlight of almost every PBEM Dip game I played!

I also played other games PBM: Diplomacy, Dune, Railway Rivals/Dampfross, Empire Builder (this game never finished.), Scattergories (OK, this was an "anyone plays" game, player submit their answers with their Dip Orders and the GM scored all of his recipients.)

I once played this. With one move a week. Every sunday even we would pass our moves to the coordinator of the game and then on monday we could see what happened. Between each move we had daily life spiced up with plotting, convincing, backstabbing,...

Certainly not as long as some as you others here, but still my longest game i ever played.

Most online variants have turn lengths of 12-24 hours; you can also play "live" if you've got nothing better to do on a sunday.

PBEM Diplomacy with press is available, but I agree it's rarely like the old days. Postal games had three weeks per move, and that gave you time to write something solid. Modern players think one week per move is unbearably long.
