keep?: considering trade or sell

reason: This game really needs more than two players and the people I play with tend not to like auction games. As much as I enjoyed my first (only) play I don't know if it is going to hit the table much.

Unlike most of the other games on this list, Amun-Re lacks direct conflict and focuses on resource management. However, the sweep of the board between the Old and the New Kingdoms, leaving behind only the pyramids, gives this game an incredible epic feel. It ostensibly covers two millennia from ~2500 BC to ~500 BC.

Alternatives: I actually prefer Tigris & Euphrates, which covers a similar period of time over in Mesopotamia, but I'm being finicky about this list. Transcendent, Tigris & Euphrates gets its own shelf in my collection.

After not making the VQ final on Monday, I had time for something else. I almost went with Air Baron, but instead decided on this.

I was pretty rusty. I was competitive for second but took third. The winner ran away with it.

I had lots of early farmers in this one, and it turned out okay; I had some money (not a ton of money, but some) going into the New Kingdom, and also I'd picked up a lot of cards. It still didn't take me long to start running low on money in the New Kingdom, though. I was only able to come up with two sets, and I didn't think I had a chance. But I did a lot better than I thought I would; I managed to get second in the gold bonus, and I had two temples, and made two bonus cards, so that was worth a lot of points. I managed to finish in second place, which felt like a real accomplishment.

Time for more Amun-re!

I ended up with Mendes in the first round, so I made the best of it and tried to see if I could make it pay off with farmers. However, the other farmer players proved unhelpful, and then I was poor and proved unhelpful to them.

So going into the New Kingdom, I didn't have a lot of cash and I had to accept whatever I could get. I did manage to draw lots of Master Builder cards with my sacrifice rewards in Round 3, so I decided to focus on getting three sets of pyramids and on depressing the economy as much as I could. And I did get the pyramids, which helped me a lot. However, nobody else wanted to depress the economy, and there were temples for lots of people besides me. The temples ended up scoring three points apiece, exactly what I didn't want to see.

Anyway, the final scores were close, except for Micah, who ended up running away with it.

Amun-Re is a game I enjoy playing, but sometimes the tournament atmosphere at WBC gets a little too tense (especially at the semis). Found time for one heat this year.

Monday, Heat 1 I ended up in a 4-player game with a couple of known sharks--Mike Kaltman and Kevin Wojtaszcyk. I tried to play conservatively in the old kingdom, but came away with far too little money to make up the point difference later. I guess I'm just used to more stealing players, which might have something do with me never playing 4-player. I did okay on bonus cards, but I didn't have the money to get either 3 sets, and was forced into doing camels again in the new kingdom because of my cards (which violates my rule of old kingdom steal, new kingdom offer). At that point, I knew I was pretty much out of the running, but I almost managed to sneak in a majority at the end by buying 6 bricks in a single turn (and I was one short of buying 7 bricks that would have guaranteed majority). Unfortunately, I misjudged who had the most cash to offer, and couldn't even get the majority. Was last by a good bit, and surprisingly the guy I didn't know came out ahead.

I've had far too many agonizing losses in all sorts of games; my first game of this was basically 'par for the course'.

By now I've forgotton most of the details, but I do remember offering all my leftover money in the final round (about $9, I think) in an effort to get the high bid and guarantee the most pyramids on a side. I succeeded in that, but that pushed the overall offer level to '3'; had I offered $1 less, it would have been at '2'. That proved costly; while I had most money by game's end, the person I was fighting the win for got 2nd-most instead of 3rd-most, and edged me by 2. Final score: 44-42-38-30.

I learned something in my second game: don't draw the ire of certain players. The player to my left staked a claim for most on one side of the Nile, and the player to my right fought him for it rather than settle for one complete set for the first round. The player to my left then swore that, for the rest of the game, he would go out of his way to screw over the player to my right. Those two went at it for much of the game.

One would think that would be great for me, but I had cash issues by the end. I was crushed in the final auction when the other players got provinces with 2+ pyramids each (Memphis had 3 after the additional bricks), and I got stuck with Dakhla for 0 pyramids. I still got a double-set out of that round and ended with most money, but still DFLed to the player across from me, 38-34-34-31.

On the other hand, this might be my heartbreak game of the convention. I generally play it once a year. However, I felt I had played very well in the first heat in which I lost by a single point (I feel if I had bid a bit more aggressively in round 5 I would've won). So I played a second heat...and lost by two. I made a huge error in the final round: I bid zero for a decent province thinking that everyone had bid already. They had, but one of the other players was outbid and had to go again. He took the province in question. I later drew a card that would have given me three points had I taken this province! Ouch!

It gets worse: hours after the game was over I discovered I had shortchanged myself on money in the final round - I had assumed that the temple marker had been pushed beyond where camels would pay out but it hadn't. It would have been a two point swing (I still would have lost on the tie-break). However, the game was long over and, quite frankly, it's my responsibility to ensure that I don't shortchange myself like that.

The event preview hinted at a low likelihood of advancing to the semis for non-heat winners. I decided to show up anyway to see if I could sneak in. No luck. In fact, no alternates advanced. Better luck next time I suppose. But I do feel I am improving at this game...

I never expect to win this game ever so I usually go with a worker strategy because it's easy for me to remember how to play. I did over bid the 1st round with 7 which was my downfall. I won the auction 4 times overall but never drew any useful bonus cards.

Finished 4th: 48-38-38-36-26
