Afterwards we bumped into my old buddy, Gil Hova, a.k.a. IngredientX, and Dave expressed an interest in Amun-Re. Gil grabbed two gamers I hadn't met before to make it a fivesome, namely Anni and Douglas.

It was immediately apparent that the two strangers were cagey Amun-Re players—very cagey—and so I began to have some concerns that I might not be able to walk all over everyone in a completely thorough fashion. No, it was quite the opposite—both Anni and Douglas played really good games, and everything seemed to go Douglas's way; every other auction I was cursing because he had walked off with something a little too cheaply. In the end he won by a wide margin. I came in second, though, beating Anni by an entire point. She looked decidedly glum about that. Ha! How do you like that, punk? Thought you could beat a crusty old polock at Amun-Re, did you? Well, I still have a few tricks up my sleeve, kid. You can just think about that all the way back to Long Island.

No, I'm just kidding, they were both super-nice and really good gamers. I would just prefer it if they were a little less good at Amun-Re.

Not saying I didn't get good deals, but I did pay 10 in round 1, and 15, 15, and 15 in rounds 4, 5, and 6. Can't really explain getting Sawu for free in round 2, though...

Once the executives arrived (in their stretch limo, I'm sure), we helped them bring in the games, and then found ourselves waiting for the shelving to arrive to hold all the games. We had about 300+ games to put out, so the shelving was pretty necessary. Anyway, we played Amun-Re while waiting, and I remembered that this was one of the first big-box strategy games I ever bought. I enjoyed it, and owned a copy for a long time, but it eventually went on to a better home in one of my purges. It's a standard Euro, and lately I've been looking for more than just that in the games I play. It was fun to play it again (though I still can't manage a good strategy in the game), and it took me back to my early gaming days.

I still don't know another game that has as much Agony of Decision and Amun-Re has it in spades, every turn, 3-4 times per turn.

Agony of Decision is one of my favorite elements in games, which is probably why I love auction games.

Which endgame? The games I've played in have been an exercise in iteratively mishmashing pieces of the Expansion content.

Finally on Sat we got round to finishing out game of 1830 from last week.

I had Can Pac (3T and 5T) and Erie (two 3Ts) and had recently bought out NYNHH (5T). Someone bought a 6T. I decided to get Erie to buy NYNHH's 5T for peanuts ($1 - a peanut?) then dump NYNHH back on the player who I took it from (player 3). He also had NYC which was also trainless. Player 4 had upgraded a 4T into a D after withholding - otherwise it was looking like the Ds might not come out.

Player 3 was now in debt for two Diesels. NYC had some money and he had some money that together totalled just over $1100 - but then he needed another 1100. His sellable shares were worth almost exactly that, and it (his bankruptcy) would come down to things like whether other companies would pay out or withhold.

Interestingly, player 2 sold him a 6T for $630 (the max), because he did not want the game to end (he would probably be 3rd) and had a pile of company money (C&O) with which he could buy a Diesel. Player 3 had to sell a bunch of stock and was out of contention, but alive.

Another curious point was that Players 3 and 4 each had a bunch of B&M shares, it was trainless, yet neither dumped their stock in it. Player 4 said it would be 'too mean', not sure why Player 3 didn't pre-emptively sell anyway. They're also a couple...

After selling NYNHH I found there was little to buy - there were loads of colours available but some I already had 60% of, some I couldn't buy, some were poisoned (no train), and the rest only had a single share available - and those all sold out. I made the mistake of forgetting about the single yellow zone bank pool share - but I bought a high value high paying B&O instead.

My companies were now running only a 5T each, and the other companies were running Diesels and 6Ts. Worse, the two other players still in contention had extra yellow zone PRR shares, and I was below the Cert Limit. I was worried that I would be out-earned, so chose to buy a 5T across from Erie, forcing Erie to buy a Diesel (1100 from my pocket). It got I think 4 runs at just under 300/run, so I roughly broke even, but the other players leeched some benefit for free, and I went a turn without a payout, hurting stock value, so overall I'd have been better off had I not done this.

I still won the game by a reasonable margin, though a little close for comfort:

P2. 5798
P3. 3970

I hate it when I have gaming days like that. Have you gotten pickier, have your tastes changed relative to your gaming group, or was it just a perfect storm of game-selection incompatibilities?

A bit of everything. I've got pickier over the last couple of years, as I've been exposed to more and more games. My main criteria are that I don't like anything that's got lots of randomness and I don't like Worker placement.

My tastes have changed, I used to think of myself as a 'middleweight Eurogamer' who would happily play anything from fillers to heavy Euros. Over time I've found the light games less and less interesting, so I want to play medium-heavy Euro/economic games.

The group itself is small (typically 2 tables of games) and has lots of divergent tastes. One guy won't play train games, another won't play anything Co-operative, Sci-Fi or Fantasy, another prefers lighter games, others prefer multiplayer fighting games, there's me, or we agree on genres just not that particular game, and on and on it goes - we're all over the place. The good news is the group is growing, recently we've had enough for 3 tables some nights.

This night there were 9 of us. Someone suggested Dominant Species, 5 people dived in, leaving me, a new guy who'll play almost anything, and a couple of guys who aren't so keen on heavier/unforgiving games. I think I'd brought Battlestar Galactica (not good with 4 so I didn't suggest it), Chicago Express, Texas & Pacific, 1830, 18EU and On the Underground (which we did end up playing when our numbers dropped).

There have been worse nights (a more perfect storm?). The Eastleigh group isn't dysfunctional beyond people having different tastes. At the university some of the players are extremely self centred e.g. people get left out, which doesn't happen at Eastleigh.

Had a game of this with Roger, David, Bernad, Stephen and me. David was the only person who've played it once a year ago. This make for a particularly murdy game during the old kingdom time as we were all trying to figure out what to do.

When the new kingdom came along however we all got a good idea of how the game played and it progress a lot better.

A definite fun game.

This one has been 4 years and 5 months. I found this to be a 'decent' Euro. I guess it just doesn't see play because it's not great. At least it's not 'meh'

I'd like to get this played 2-3 times in 2012
