Amun-Re is the last of the great Knizia strategy classics and invented simultaneous auctions as most remarkable feature. It's typically Knizia with its multiple scoring dimensions and perfect balance. A slight luck factor is present in the bonus card draws but experienced players will usually win this as they will know how much to bid on what and this is where the game is decided. Many claim that they only will play this with 5 but I enjoyed it with 4 as well. A classic that stood the test of time.

x1 Amun Re
x1 Ponzi Scheme
x2 Race for the Galaxy
x3 John Company

Short post this week as I've gotta dash off to work in a few minutes.

The fall semester starts Wednesday, so I'm on campus trying to get as much work done as possible. Last week was a total loss for dissertation work, so I need to make up for lost time. Thankfully I'm just about finished with my other obligations (including An Infamous Traffic).

Still, I managed a few games over the week. I went over to the Cedar Park group on Saturday and had a lovely evening with Ponzi Scheme and Amun Re. Ponzi Scheme was wonderful as usual. It was my first game of Amun Re. I liked it just fine. I think I prefer Ra for its teachability, but Amun Re had some fun wrinkles--though I tend to dislike games where drafting from an objective/power card deck is at the heart of the game (Princes of Florence is the least irritating of the bunch).

Outside of that Cati and I have gotten back in the swing of playing games in the evening. We managed a couple hands of Race, but the majority of our game time was spent with John Company, which Cati can't get enough of. The two player works fine, but you essentially play "two-handed." I'm happy to report that all the math seems to check out so far. Now I just need to design some more objective cards and get the parliamentary system working like it should. Right now it's so open that players rarely use it. So I'm going to restrict player freedoms a bit and try to tighten it up a little. As it turns out, when you give players too many options they tend to stay on the tried and true paths.

Generally speaking though the game is in really good shape. The real-time action sequence of the game is certainly here to stay. The victory point conversions have the proper (or close to the proper) ratio. It will certainly be ready for a lot of play at Bgg con.

I'm pretty good at Amun-Re, but it does tend to attract a lot of players who are better than I am. I've made the semifinals a couple of times, but haven't sniffed the finals.

Monday, Heat 1 I was originally assigned to a five-player table with Eric Freeman and Cary Morris, but Eric got re-assigned at the last moment so we were left with four. Things weren't looking good after the Old Kingdom, as I went for cash and didn't end up with very much more than the other players, and only scored 6 points. Round 5 was pretty huge though, as two players had built a massive amount of farmers, but the offering ended up at 1, and I played an $8 card on a place where I didn't play farmers. I had the most money going into round 6, and that's when Damanhur with 3 pyramids came up. I won it for only $15, and had enough left to win the offering and ended up with majorities on both sides. I had a big deficit to come back from, but I managed to win by a few.

This qualified me for the semifinals, but they were unfortunately at the same time as the Dominion quarterfinals that I qualified for later. I made an executive decision here and opted for Dominion. Turns out me not showing up would allow my wife to get in as an alternate, so there's some serendipity.

For whatever reason, I tend to have many agonizing losses at this game (which included a dice-off to qualify for the SF round during one particular year). And for whatever reason, I keep coming back for more.

I was actually able to play all three heats this year. My first game was decided in the last round, Eric Freeman and I fought over the same province (Memphis with multiple pyramids, I believe). Eric bid 21 with the Bid Blockade (both such cards got played for the first time in Round 6), I went 36, and both of us brought up the rear with 31 points (with me technically coming in 3rd due to tiebreaks); the top two each scored 40, with Chris Gnech winning with another tiebreak.

My 2nd game would match me with Lexi again, as well as Cary Morris for the first and only time this year. I started this game like the last: I hoarded money but only had 6 points after the first scoring phase. Like the last game, I was able to score a triple-set for the second scoring phase; this time around, I also got more on one side and eked out the win, 37-35-29-27-22. (I have never been involved in a game where Mendes, in Round 6, went for 21 with the Bid Blockade; then again, Mendes has 2 pyramids and a brick, Berenike had a single pyramid, and the other three provinces had squadoosh.)

One win was probably enough, but I had time on Thursday for the final heat. I got to play David Platnick and Robert St Pierre in this one; the latter coasted to the win, with the rest of us tightly-bound in a race for 2nd, 38-29-28-28-27. Overall, I earned a 1st, a 2nd, and a 3rd. (Round 4 in this game killed me. I had a camel space, with Platnick owning Dakhla with a dirt farmer. I played the '-3' during the sacrifice, but David went 1 instead of -3 ... and the player to my right, thinking he played the -3 with the 'move the bid +/- 3' card, only played the latter card by mistake; by rule, that card counted as a bid of 1. The total sacrifice ended up at the 3-level, I lost my camel, and Robert began his coast to victory.)

The SF round was done by seeding, and unless I am mistaken, I was seeded 4th for my efforts. For that, I was able to play Chris Gnech for the 2nd time at Amun-Re (and 3rd time out of 4 overall), Greg Thatcher, and Anni Foasberg.

I could not have asked for a better start: I got Baharya for 0 in the first round, made the high sacrifice, drew three cards ... and ended up with three green '+1' money cards! (I'm sure the deck WAS shuffled, but there were some strange looks over that draw. Then again, Anni's free card from Dakhla was the green '8' money card.) I would also go on to make 2 bonus cards (the two non-geographic ones), and had a decent score with good money heading into the 2nd round. On top of all that, we all knew that the final would be made up of the four winners and the closest 2nd; in my mind, I thought that even if I didn't hold on for the win, I'd likely get the closest 2nd. I even made two more bonus cards during final scoring.

I lost by 6, getting 2nd in my own game only because of the tie-break. Final scores were 43-37-37-22.

So what happened?

Basically, Greg did this game what I did in my first two: he hoarded cash with the two available camel spaces early, scored 7 for the first half, then pounced on Dakhla with multiple pyramids late to make a triple set. Also, Anni (who played a solid game overall) failed to fight for most pyramids on the side opposite Dakhla, and Greg ended up scoring the most on both sides.

We tried to analyze all the possibilities that could have come from late in that game, deciding that any one of us could have won, with scores perhaps closer than they ended up. The bottom line was, I earned another heartbreaking loss to my list of Amun-Re games.
