I've played (and once owned) Thunderstone and just couldn't get into it... it was too long for what it was. I've never played Cyclades but have wanted to for years... hopefully later this month I'll get a chance.

Part of 2nd CSI order. I just played this again the other day. I had forgotten how much I liked it. I also realized that I need to paint the minis for this. I will add them to the list of things to paint during summer vacation!

Played in my new gaming club. my first 5 player game.

Best game of the month. Period. My best game of Cylcades as well. So that's another period. Playing with friends the game allways felt it starts too slowly and then ends abruptly in a total chaos where somebody wins. With seasoned gamers (mostly new to the game) it was a total blast: once we went past the "omg somebody's going to win" threshold, the game didn't stop in the next 2 turns as usual, but continued for 4 or 5 very tense turns. We've seen blitzkrieg, one player using the Zeus cycling action twice (!)- once by selling all his units as well, and the most quiet player won in the end. If every game of it was like this, I'd rate it as 9.5 at least.

Comparing it to my latest gaming experiences I must say I'm not a fan of the set up, as you don't have adjacent islands. Want to try it with Free positioning variant from the expansion.

Anytime the board changes depending on the number of players. Usually occurs when someone drops out at the last minute. Not to bad to correct as it is only the soldiers and ships that you need to redo.

On Friday, I got to try Cyclades with a local group that formed through BGG. We had a ridiculous 5P game, and it was fantastic. At the end of the game, everyone had their first metropolis AND Pegasus came out for the first time in the game right at the end. Crazyness.

After that, we ended with 7 Wonders + Leaders.

I also played two games of 2P Carson city earlier in the day with a non-BGG friend.

_7_ Cavum x1
Played with Jane and Jesse, while Jonathan played Yomi with Dan.
This was the first time for Jane and Jesse to play and it had been awhile since my last play. In the end, Jane won with 143 to my 125 and Jesse's 120. I believe she got ahead primarily based on city scoring.

_6_ Cyclades x1
The highlight of the evening was five players of Cyclades with Jonathan, Jesse, Josh, and Dan.
The game was marked by bouts of ridiculousness as various potential leaders got slammed by the table. I had an army ready to get me a metropolis when Medusa froze my people, then another force came and took me out, basically the two of us fighting for the chance to fight someone else. A potential win by gathering Athena's favor was blocked by high bidding on her. In the end, Jesse won by conquering anothering of my islands, which gave him the parts needed to form his second metropolis. Fun times!

_5_ 7 Wonders x1
Cyclades ran late but we decided to play one last thing before calling it an evening so I got to try 7 Wonders for the first time. I ended up with a high military strategy that didn't pay off too well and tied Jonathan for last place at 46 points. Josh managed a bit better at 52 and Dan, the other person at the table I believe hadn't played before, did well with 60. However, Jesse won the day with 71 points due to superior science set collection skills.

I may talk about 7 Wonders later in the week, but right now we're getting ready for a mega brunch outing with visiting family.

Not a very exciting rating for your highlight game! Cyclades has fallen flat with my game group. I really like it but no one else seems to. I keep hoping for the chance to give it another try, but I won't do it with fewer than four people to maximize my chances of a good game session.

When I said 7 Wonders fell into an uncanny valley, I'm referring to this phenonema: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uncanny_valley

I'm abusing the term quite a bit and it occurs to me what I was trying to get across wasn't obvious. I'll take another shot at it. In my mind, there's a tension in 7 Wonders between being a casual game and a game that requires more study.

With something like No Thanks!, the ruleset is pretty simple and the cards don't require memorization, so it can be played reasonably well by new people. Experience with the game can make for stronger play, but in general new players can do well on their first game.

In Ora et Labora, first time players are at a huge disadvantage. The game rewards study, knowing which buildings combo well with other buildings.

7 Wonders, for me, falls in this weird middle ground. As a casual, pick up style game, trying to recall all the different ways to score: military, science collection in two directions, etc. felt like you really needed to know the deck. When I built a particular thing and I am hoping to chain a free build off of it, then it matters to me if I see the building I was hoping for show up in my opponent's tableau.

That's why I felt it was necessary to know how many of X thing is in the deck, which is hard to recall even if you tried due to the deck adjusting itself to the number of players, unless it is a simple formula: there are always x+1 or x-1 or simply x of y card, where x is the number of players.

Comparing 7 Wonders with Eminent Domain, which fills a similar space to me, EmDo can reward knowing the deck, but the scoring is easier to remember, for me at least: VP points on planets, certain tech cards, and from produce/trade. The cards are easier to remember too.

Comparing 7 Wonders with Glory to Rome (which I haven't played yet), it seems GtR feels heavier and more worth study and less of a pick-up filler game. This is where I am less certain of things. I haven't played Dominion or Race for the Galaxy either.

So, anyway, I hope that helps. I do like 7 Wonders, but I feel divided over wanting to study its nuances and thinking that it really isnt worth the effort to do so because anyone I play with probably wont have bothered and I should just treat it more casually.

Yes, I agree. I am not good at giving precise analyses, but yes, GtR is very inviting to have lots of plays, but 7 Wonders feels much more casual and coincidental. Also, in GtR the cards have unique abilites, and the possible combos - I cannot get bored with the game, and still feels fresh, exciting, entertaining and lots of fun.

Can't say that about Fairy Tale, which some seem to think is better.

I like Fairly Tale, but prefer 7 Wonders, maybe because of the theme or because it feels less abstract?

I see where you're coming from, but I definitely see 7 Wonders differently. I don't think it's all that important to know exact building counts because I'm assessing every hand for its own sake. With few exceptions, it's not that important to plan because often you can't rely on anything coming to you anyway. You're better off being flexible. I certainly don't rely on building chains; they're simply nice bonuses when they come about.

It is probably more beneficial to track exact building counts, but I am guessing it is only marginally more beneficial. It is best to be as water and flow along the path of least resistance... to victory!

I think we actually see it pretty much the same way however I think I just wish that I could play a bit more strategically. I also agree I don't think there'd be much benefit to tracking the exact building counts either. As I said it's in this weird middleground for me.

Although the end goal is the same for everyone (own two metropolises), the three ways you can get a metropolis (building one yourself, creating one with philosophers, and conquering another player's metropolis) have almost nothing to do with each other... and you can focus your efforts however you want. You can legitimately win by spending the entire game attacking everyone, not attacking at all, or any point in between.

Per Yannis' request, I'll bring this game.

It's a great euro and AT hybrid game that only takes 90 minutes or so.
