I like all the C&C series of games, and while I prefer Ancients a bit more, this one is always fun. Plus, little toy soldiers! (unlike the wooden blocks in the GMT incarnations.) Mike won this one in a nail biter, 6-5.

I'll have to remember to start putting a couple of C&C games in the car for other opportunities on Fridays.

This would be my first one. I've found 2" ceramic hex tiles that I could permanently mount 1:72 scale plastic miniatures that would be fully painted and mounted in small scenes. I'm also going to leave room to mark the troop strengths using a moving cube instead of removing units. Different troop types could then be modeled doing the things that they really did. Artillery units would be one cannon with a full crew, and so on. It would be much more visual in use.

I already have all the materials, it's just a matter of finding the time.

I've also got enough minis to do Memoir '44 also.

The added bonus is that special units (engineers and such) could be differentiated by the unit itself and not an extraneous token.

I played this game a lot in college with a few regular players.

I played as the Union once during one of the Gettysburg scenarios. I held the strong Union defensive line, including Devil's Den. Historically this scenario trended very strongly toward a Union Victory.

I however, lost 6 to 1 or 6 to 0, as I was completely unable to pour any effective fire on the Confederate troops as they charged across the open ground. They inflicted far more casualties on my dug in troops from the open ground and routed my men upon becoming adjacent to my line.

I still remember the genuine and joyful mirth being expressed by my opponent as he rolled hits (crossed sabres and infantry) again and again. Then I would roll cavalry & artillery against infantry and get nary a hit.

Hall of Shame for sure. But it was memorable and still quite fun, and makes me smile to think about it.

I find that tending to compare real history to this game tends to have failing expectations.

This game, while a good light wargame in itself, is nothing remotely close to anything "historical".

Oh I agree. In this case, what made the outcome so comical and shameful was the degree to which my Union forces were vanquished. I could roll few hits with many dice, and suffered extraordinary damage while dug into my fortified high ground.

Great fun game, in my opinion, and that's the best reason to play it. But I agree it doesn't model "historical" realities in its mechanisms.

Played several times but in very good shape. One infantry figure has a gun that has the tip broken off(now looks kinda like a sawed off shotgun), and box has shelf wear. That is pretty much it as far as issues. I just purchased the 150th anniversary edition so keeping this makes no sense.

And the only keeper for the day was this little guy at the La Canada/Lambert GW for $5.99. Still need to inventory (hopefully later tonight), but insides are in great shape so I'm optimistic.

Edit: Complete except for 1 terrain tile, and one confederate infantry is a bit chewed and has a slight zombie-lean about him. Oh, and lots of bonus pet hair, which goes great with all the little flag stickers.

EDIT: I tipped Mike off to some heroscape stuff on his side of town last week, and after he and his co-worker decided they didn't want it, he passed it back to me at cost rather than reselling or trading it. Good thrift karma all around!

This popped up in a 'chain of generosity' list a few months ago which originally got me looking at it. It's in the same vein as Memoir '44 which I already have and don't play nearly enough so I can't say I needed this as well, but I'll hang on to it for probably at least a few plays. I like the idea of playing these with the kids someday for the historical value.

Richard Borg's first game in the Commands and Colors series features 15 scenarios, including a popular simulation of Stones River

The Slaughter of the Orphans

Bragg, worried about Crittenden's failed maneuver on January 1st, ordered Breckinridge to assault Crittenden. It was a tall order, but at first Breckinridge was successful. However, once his men crossed Stones River they were met by some 45 guns. The ensuing slaughter cost the Confederates over 1,000 men, with most of the loses falling on the Orphan Brigade, an elite unit of Kentucky Confederates. Breckinridge, a Kentuckian, had led these men into battle at Shiloh and Baton Rouge. He now cried out "My poor Orphans! My poor Orphans!" The following day Rosecrans received reinforcements and supplies. Wheeler had failed. A limited Union attack in the center was a success. Bragg now faced reality. Rosecrans was not withdrawing, but instead getting stronger. The Confederate army was shot up and dispirited. The officers were grumbling and even his supporters in the army were angry and lacking confidence. Brag withdrew towards Tullahoma, a more defensible but barren region.

Played with my 7 year old daughter at her completely unprompted request (I was assuming she would want to play Ticket to Ride once again).

We met at Antietam, and with a few tactical pointers she played well. The game came down to the last die roll. Her Rebs were victorious and she was elated. I think I've lost 3 straight games to her.

So this one hardly counts for as it's only been collecting dust for about 7 months.

But I rate it a 9 and only play it 0nce in 2011, and 0 in 2010, 1 in 2009 and nothing until 2006 when I got my copy and played it 6 times.

I want to get 6 plays of this in during 2012

I've only played BattleCry out of the series, but, as far as theme goes, my favorite would be Ancients. I also like that it has, from what I understand, greater depth, and high historical accuracy, where you can play out historical scenarios.
What scares me though, if I ever play it and decide I have to own it, is the multitude of expansions that will be calling my name...

I rank them Ancients > Napoleonics > Battle Cry > Memoir '44

Ancients hits the sweet spot for me as 'wargame lite'. The different unit types and multitudes of armies and scenarios give it a lot of flavor. I actually prefer it to its GMT stable mate Great Battles of History, even though I have almost all of the GBoH ancients stuff.

I played a scenario of it online Monday night, Telamon from the second expansion, where the Gauls set up in the middle of the board with a Roman army on each board edge. Fun...

Napoleonics might be a case of over egging the pudding though, it comes close to the edge (or over, YMMV) of what is acceptable rules weight and detail for C&C. I've played it about six times, and the jury is still out for me if I like it or not, but I do want to play it some more. Also didn't like that they started British-French. It seems all Napoleonic game systems start with the British and the French, either for marketing to English speakers or because the battles tend to be smaller. Don't know yet if I'll spring the big bucks for the Russian-Prussian-Austrian expansions.

Battle Cry is fine for what it is, though I prefer 'real' wargames when it comes to ACW. I'll happily play it, though, it just lands third on my list.

Memoir '44 leaves me cold, World War II is a very popular topic for wargames and there are so many options. I can play a simple ASL Starter Kit scenario in two to three hours and have a much better time. To be fair, I haven't played it in years, and would be willing to give it another shot. Nobody local has been clamoring for me to teach them Starter Kit. robot

Never played Battlelore and it has never seemed highly regarded.

And though I've played a ton of Ancients (at least compared to most of my wargames) I still only own the first two expansions out of six. You DON'T have to buy all of the expansions...just say no to that voice in your head...

(OTOH, I will probably pick up the rest of the expansions, but only over time.)

I guess as a 'reformed' 'wargamer' I can acknowledge your like of Ancients as it IS the 'deepest' most 'wargame like' of them (that I've played).

But, I really don't play 'wargames' any more and I look at the C&C system as a board game. That's why we are almost opposite in ouor likes in this system.

Battlecry > Memoir ' 44 > Ancients > Battlelore

I'm looking at these as quick light card driven/dice rolling board games.

I've not played Ancients.

I own Clash for a Continent: Battles of the American Revolution and French & Indian War which rips off the C&C system pretty blatantly but looks REALLY nice. Still haven't played that either.

Saturday: My buddy Jonathan and I finished up the Jackson Campaign with the battle of Cedar Mountain. I finally won a battle! It came down the very end, both my generals were by themselves and Jonathan played a coordinated attack. He was able to roll 7 dice to attempt to kill a general and get the 6th and final flag, but was unable to do it! I then killed a infantry unit to take the 6-5 victory. The final on the campaign though was Jonathan with a 3 flag edge. After that we played Gangster. It was okay, we played 3 players and felt 5 might be better.

Sunday: Two games of 7 Wonders. The first game was my worst experience ever with 7 Wonders. 2 players were new and 4 players were constantly forgetting how the game worked, even though 2 of them have played it half a dozen times. Confusing costs with resources they have, it was rough. Surprisingly though, my sister who was a new player and had to ask a lot of questions and isn't a gamer at all, enjoyed the game enough she asked me when our next game day will be and wanted to play another game of 7 Wonders right away. So maybe another gamer in the family?
