The "Not escape from" Atlantis, where the players, erm, escape from Atlantis... I like the mix of luck, skill, and screwage in this game, although have a sneaking suspicion that turn order combined with tile layout and initial hands have an almost insurmountable say in how the game turns out.

Atlantis is another one of those special games between us, likely because of the extravagant spy story/experience Lindy created for me around it (found here) during Christmas 2010. We seemed to be playing a little different today and there was a lot of water out before we got finished. LIndy won this one by quite a margin.

We broke open Andy's copy, but Andy himself had had the prudence to remove himself from the explodey island well beforehand (and was playing another game entirely). Both Scotts ended up with negative points and probably a horrible impression of the game. It's fun, really!

I don't own Atlantis, but what interests me about it is its Cartagena-like mechanisms, but sort of 'Mark 2.0' of them (even though Cartagena itself had a 'Mark 2.0' edition...). Cartagena never really interested me; something about single file pirates escaping from a prison (or whatever the setting purportedly is) seemed...dumb. But escaping from the cataclysm claiming your island city...cool!
Of course, the game itself doesn't bear too much resemblance to that setting (I mean, how great could the civilization of Atlantis have been, if they thought it was a good idea to build that snaking bridge with half a dozen switchbacks?)
This appears to be another of those 'roll with the punches' games paired with a race mechanic. I don't have too many (or, really, any) 'race' mechanism games in my collection, so this looks like it could be a winner. I'm on the fence about it, but it's likely I'll try to pick it up at some point.

Seeing as though a big number of my normal beginner games are already on this this, I will throw this one up as it is a good one. A nice simple race game but with the strategy of trying to conserve your points without losing them as you go. Other than the setup time (5-10 minutes) this is a good first game to break out with newcomers.
