To my mind, this is about the perfect little euro. Again, that may or may not be a recommendation. It's got the theme, it's got the tightness of gameplay, and it's got the bidding. However, the auction is short and small, and a brief lead-in to the main round. You'll be going for victory points (of course), and trying to do so by building buildings that help the artists, scientists, and philosophers whom you patronize create greater and greater works.

As a euro, it works extremely well. But don't expect anything other than perhaps the definitive (in terms of what it bring to the table) euro. It lasts about an hour and a half. Conflict is confined to bidding. The theme does work, despite the game's having been very pasteable.

Plays 2 to 5.

It's awful sad, but I still have not played this one yet. I know I'm going to love it. Maybe this weekend I will make a special point to get it played finally.

Chris,

I've taught this several times, and it sounds like I'll be teaching it again. But if you read the rulebook it might help you with strategy- this one really rewards planning!

Started playing an old favorite again; Princes of Florence. Always has been one of my "10's" and having just recently introducing it to 3 new players, I think we'll be playing this one again, and often. They all loved it! I tried a 2 player variant with my wife on Sunday and we found that quite enjoyable as well. I will say this again: "This is NOT 5 player solitaire" as there ALWAYS has been plenty of player interaction in all the games I have played; 5-6 years ago, and now in 2012! For a 12 year old game, that IS great!

Kevin mentioned wanting to play this again, and since I missed the last few opportunities to play I was eager. This was the first play for Nate. We started the game and then Kathryn showed up. We told her she was welcome but it was a deeper game. She handled herself well.

I made a fatal mistake and didn't have a profession for the final round. Since I didn't win the recruiter card, I couldn't complete a work. I eneded up getting a third worker and two buildings for 9 PP. Could I completeed a work for more than 18 WV? Probably, but not enough to get out of last place.

Kathryn more than handled herself well...with the bad translations and crazy font and somewhat rushed teaching. For the second game in a row (me playing this), I went heavy on the profession and didnt do any prestige cards...both times Kevin played the "woest me" game while I cruised out to a 10-15 point lead...then he beats me by one with his prestiges. yuk Im always the best loser...I always come in second in life cry

I have played this game A LOT. It's probably my favorite game. I've only lost one time. More accurately, I've won every single game but one. That one time was to a friend who is TERRIBLE at strategy games. In fact, she's pretty much terrible at ALL games. She even admits it herself. I don't know what happened. Worst of all, EVERYONE saw it.

It was bad. Very, very bad.

Is this the 2000 printing with the alea-looking box or the 2010 one that has the Treasure Chest stuff?

Ok, I'm truly unfamiliar with this game having played it but once and I didn't play this copy which I got in a trade. The side of the box says Alea on it. It has the Princess and the Muse expansion as well as the 2-player expansion which I believe come from the Treasure Chest.

The box itself looks exactly like the one pictured above.

Thanks! That means it's the 2000 printing and the stuff literally came from the Treasure Chest; the 2010 printing doesn't have the alea "boilerplate" design like this one on the box, and had the expansions packaged with it.

Since you have the expansions, I think the only difference between what you've got and the new printing is the art on the box; I believe the components to be identical.

Great game -- our game group has three copies. Excellent condition, 2000 edition, some whiting on corners. Plenty of player aids.

Free US shipping (including AK and HI), first $15 in shipping outside US.
