Next up was this co-op. I had ordered it along with Wrath of Ashardalon a few days before, but I've never played it. Enjoyed it, and can't wait to get my kids playing with me. Broke the co-op streak, as we were able to defeat the game!

I wanted to play one of the D&D adventure games this weekend. I got to play this one and really enjoyed it. we managed a win against the monsters & evil villian.

I think I am going to have to pick up one of these games; maybe The Legend of Drizzt.

I ordered Ravenloft and Ashadalon right before the Con. If I remember in November I can bring the other one.

I really wanted to love this game. It has all the earmarks for a game I should enjoy. Great components utilizing a favorite specialized theme.

Unfortunately for me, I was expecting a dungeon crawler with a sense of adventure that had oodles of theme which does not feel formulaic. It had absolutely none of those qualifiers for me.
It is not that mechanics are bad, but it feels like a souless and sadistic game where you must be a masochist in order to glean any enjoyment from what little experience there is to be had.
My biggest gaming disappointment of 2011.

I am really glad that this series has been successful for WotC though even if it is not for me. It just means more mean competition on the market and better games for everyone because of a wider selection.

I admire this one for the effort, for the great minis, for the graphics all around.

did...not...like...it. The only bright spot is that I didn't spend the effort to paint the minis, thank goodness.

The "adventure" felt so arbitrary and lackluster that the group I was playing with could not get into it at all.

I admire it for everything except the game play.

Great components, great theme which they somehow subsequently mangled, great way in which they pulled the wool over many peoples eyes into thinking this was a dungeon crawl.

I admire how successful this game is despite it being a tedious bore.

Its a bittersweet thing. Not as blatant of an admiration as others have for other games, but there is a at least a begrudging admiration about several aspects of the product.

So we went back to the store, remembering we had seen some other games, and got a hold of this jewel. We were hooked. This also led to Tom Vasel's videos which in turn led to BGG.

What we like about it: This was a great coop to play together with the family. It was a great reminiscent of our dating days, one of her favorite campaign/world settings and also a great Christmas vacation. The game is fun to booth too, and with really neat components.

It only got better. Stopped by one more store on my way into work and spotted this on the shelves of the DI I have the hardest time finding things (SOOOO many Vultures there. They yell at people to stay off the 'cart' walkway until the handler has let go of the cart. Seriously a ruthless thrift shop indeed)

I looked at it quickly and it looks pretty new! in fact there was a recipt in it, from a Hastings in NM 8 months ago...$70 bucks!!!

I will inventory later, but it looks pretty complete.

$1 at DI

EDIT: Inventoried it while watching 'Black Tight Killers'. Japanese 60's spy thrillers are the greatest! Anyway, IT'S COMPLETE!!!! yay! the Dragon mini alone would be worth more than the $1 I paid

Which one? HaJoMaJe?

I'll do my best to come up. Will most likely be on Wed. Most of my company is out for GDC this week and we have a bunch of crap to update into our online game next week. So since everyone is gone Imna get a whole lotta assets and work to do Mon-Wed. I should be able to get it wrapped up though. Would love to come up!

Right, I'm in better shape to give an impression of this game now that I have played the first 6 scenarios.

The first 2 (tutorial scenarios) I played and they were ok, a little bit bland, but as they were training games I kept my powder dry until I'd got a flavour of the real game.

Having played scenarios 3 to 6, each with a random 2 character party, I have to say that I'm having a blast (fireball?). Each scenario is well conceived and feels completely different to me. A mixture of not having a set map layed out, encounters and unique storylines and objectives. I have only won one of these 4 scenarios, and that was against the mighty Dracolich (who knew)?

There is a constant hurry-up feel to the game to avoid being swamped by monsters and I like the weight of the treasures...use 'em and lose 'em or just a slight permanent advantage like a +1 attack to your dice roll sword.

Also, using a d20 makes combat unpredictable... a +1 to a d20 roll is only marginal.

I am more than happy to hear that Drzzzt and Arshardalon are better games than Castle Ravenloft.... good news indeed ... mwahahahahahaaha !!

FANTASTIC. I love to hear when people are enjoying this one. Ashardalon adds variety creature-wise and character wise, but Drzzt really cranks up the difficulty; not say like a Ghost Stories or Gears of War, but much higher than the first two entries in this series.

My only qualm with the whole series is that the tile art is always bland. It's really not that big a deal overall but I do wish the look of the sets was bigger. The plastic is unique and the powers and traps are different, so it's not as though they will feel the same when you play.

One note on Ashardalon: When/If you decide to obtain it and you go to play the first scenario please realize that it's SOLO. Don't do what another over-exuberant player in our group did; he wanted to set up the game and simply chose the first scenario. We had four players and won more handily than ever before. When he read the scenario again he realized his mistake blush

Castle Ravenloft provides a very basic dungeon with monsters feel, where Descent really requires preparation on part of the Overlord and some serious strategizing by the players.

In all fairness, my family has played both sides on each case. However, my casual gamers group will probably need some constructive coaching to go from one side to the other.

Castle Ravenloft holds a special place at our house because it was one of the first modern design board games we acquired.

Games played this week

Dungeons & Dragons: Castle Ravenloft Board Game
Played the first scenario and enjoyed it. Not bloated and over-chromed like Descent (and I speak as a Descent fan).

The Republic of Rome
Played the Middle era scenario and loved it. After just 2 plays, this game has knocked Through the Ages off it's perch as my favourite non-wargame. Nuff said.

Dungeoneer: Tomb of the Lich Lord
A nice lite dungeon crawler using just cards. Fun and quick to play.

Dungeoneer: Realm of the Ice Witch
See previous comment.

Wow, we had a pretty negative experience with the first couple scenarios with Castle Ravenloft, but I was playing with people who had no experience at all with it as a RPG.

It became pretty repetitive really fast.

Wow, we had a pretty negative experience with the first couple scenarios with Castle Ravenloft, but I was playing with people who had no experience at all with it as a RPG.

It became pretty repetitive really fast.

I'm lucky to have the group I do. Everyone is either a former or current RPG'er. There are so many familiar elements or opportunities to combo and be creative that every play has been fun. Easy, but fun.

The first couple of scenarios are for learning the game (just finished the second one), so I've factored this into my opinion thus far. It's much more approachable than Descent and plays in a more doable timespan.

I've actually found the subsequent releases, Wrath of Ashardalon and Legend of Drizzt to have higher challenge, better variety, and equal complexity for it all. I think Ravenloft was designed to be more forgiving to bring in gamers that didn't necessarily play board games at all, and even families that might have an interest. READ: Mainstream

I've just played the 3rd scenario of Castle Ravenloft and managed to get to Krak's laboratory but then got my ass handed to me. Much better scenario than the first two tutorial ones. I enjoyed it a lot, all the more so for not winning again.

Played once or twice

Edit: Note: I pulled this off the shelf yesterday and noticed that the box has some damage - some wrinkling on 1 corner edge of the inner box and some wrinkling on the box bottom on the corresponding corner. Components are all in nearly new condition.
