Vinci came next. You don't control a specific race, but you have two unique technologies. Vinci features your civ expanding and declining, but there is no economic aspect and military is a very basic one-for-one mechanic. Again, not Civ-Lite, but a good game to play.

I pronounce this "winky" (hard "c"s in ancient latin, "v"s are a soft w sound), although my fellow gamers usually look at me strangely until I bring out the game and then they say "oh, yeah".

Yep. Dear lord, please don't call this great game "WINKY." That makes it sound like a euphemism for your penis.

"You guys want me to bring out Winky?"

"Noooo! Noooooo! Esss too sexy!"

Yeah. When the game was revised into Small World, they were thinking of calling it Dinky Winky.

I prefer the look of Vinci over Small World, but I prefer Smallworld's segmentatoin of attributes into race/class. I also prefer SmallWorld's closed scoring, but that's more a function of the people I played with who insist on attacking whoever currently has the most points. But we solved that in Vinci by using mini poker chips in plastic cups. But I sold them both.

Objective / Scoring: Scoring is completed at the end of every turn. You score one point for every nonmountain territory you control at the end of the round plus any bonus points you have for your civilizations. Com civs allow you to score mountains, other allow you to score points based on how many pieces you eliminate in a turn. There are many ways to score.

Game End: The game end is triggered by a predertimined number of points, based on the number of players, being reach and then the round is concluded so everyone has the same amount of turns.

Taking Actions: On a plyers tiurn they may end their turn, score their current civ and take a new civilization or take a normal turn. An normal turn consists of taking any number of their pieces off the board and then attacking other players from a territory adjacent to one where they have a piece. They can continue to attack unitl they choose to stop or they run out of pieces to use. Then the player may distribute any unsued pieces or ones from territories they choose to abandon among the territories they control to act as a defense against other players' aggression.

Exploration: There is no exploration

Movement: Movement is largely irrelevant as you can pick up pieces at will. You do have to maintain a contigous civ or lose the smaller of the two parts that are cut off. The only real board movement is accomplished by taking territory as you can immediately attack out of conquered territory.

Development: There is little devleopment. you have a finite number of troops to start and you can only get more if you have certain civ combinations. thus your civlizations days are numbered from the beginning. eventually you cannot defend or expand more and this forces you to get a new civ.

Resources: There are no resources per se. There are territories that will score more points based on your civs specilizations but you never collect a resource, just get points for controlling it. expansion is entirely through combat. you have to defeat the initial neutral civ pieces when you first come on the board andf then you spend the rest of the game eliminating your opponents pieces.

Technology: Technology consists of a pair of tiels that indicate what you cvilization does well. You add up two numbers on the pieces to find out how many pieces your civ starts with and you will get special powers from each tile in the civ. The only exception is the barbarians tile as its special power is that it gets the most pieces to start with.

Conflict: battles are simple and detemrinistic. when attacking, you put 2 pieces down for the territory, one for each opposing piece on the territory, and, one more if it is a forest, and one more if it is a mountain. you automatically conquer the space if you can place that many pieces in the territory. the opponent removes all but one piece which is removed from the board as a casualty. The attacckeer cannot use the pieces for any more atttacks but cna rearrange them in defense at the end of the turn. any opponents with defeated armies can also put them down in defense at the end of the turn.

Politics: No trading or real negotiation but highly political. VPs are opne information so you will often be trying to convince others to pick on the leader and not you, unless you are the leader. Then you will tryto get thme to pick on the one who will become the leader if they pick on you.

Luck: The only luck in the game is how the civs come out but this is mediated by your ability to pay to get a better civ if a weaker one is in front of you. your payment then acts as a bribe for someone else to pick the weaker civ eventually as you vp payment becomes their vps if they choose it.

Vinci was a very unique game that allowed you to have a civ feel and combat without having to play for hours. It reminds me of a light and super fast history of the world. however, small world, a lighter/gutted version of vinci is now available with the same mechanics. I think small world is like a sugary snack, short adrenaline rush but leaves you feeling empty afterward. it is certainly a more consumer accepted game but I think Vinci is the better game overall.

Edition: Descartes 1st edition, English. 1st edition map verified. Home-printout of 2nd edition rules included.

Game Condition: Played but in good condition. Map has minor scuffing in the ocean quadrant over the compass rose (not in the map areas where you actually play). Not sure how it got there - I believe that was where we used to put the civ counters, so it saw some counter sliding action. Not a huge flaw, just wanted to mention it. All other components verified complete.

Box Condition: Good condition, no damage, but starting to show wear at corners and some edges.

Shipping: Free USPS Priority shipping within the USA; however, the level of packaging will vary with distance. Within 1-4 postal zones of Southern Oregon (generally the west coast, with some of Idaho, Utah, and Nevada) this will ship in a large box with ample room for bubble-wrap and packing peanuts all around. Further away (including AK and HI), it may ship in a USPS medium flat rate box, which leaves room for bubble wrap all around except two sides. Selecting this for trade means you are comfortable with that degree of protection. Free tracking number in all cases.

International Shipping: I will pay the first $11 of shipping outside the USA and can adjust the degree of packaging at your request, depending on whether weight or padding is more your concern.

This is the game upon which Small World is based and I thought we'd bring it and let the Small World players see how it compared.

The differences in the rules were explained quickly and as quickly understood. I trailed by about 10 points for most of the game but made up a decent amount of pointage. Still last place though.

I think Rob won? It was a close thing though. With Vinci the 6 player game ends when 100 points are reached, and when the turn finishes for everyone, it's most past the post. So at the end there was a lot of frantic calculation to try and get past Rob's score.

It was a good, solid game.

Photos of the final scores will be up shortly. Now, who was playing? Me, Rob, ariaflame (Elaine), Renato, Craig and mezzomaniac I think?

I also prefer it to Small World, it's a lot more satisfying. I wonder if the Club would be interesting in finding itself a copy, with so many Small World players about it would quite popular I think.
