I'll consider the Rockhead notification an invite.

I can't remember anything about it verbatim or even who it was, but it was some English historical betrayal right? Lines went something like, "The whole world is not worth a man's soul, but for Wales?".

I should probably go look it up, but then it would feel like cheating. And since Tim is not involved, I can't bring myself to cheat here.

This game is incredibly straight forward to understand, but also both challenging and fun. At least in my mind.

The three different groups I've played it with have all had a really hard time grasping the concept and really just play randomly, and don't really enjoy it much. (And mostly these are regular gamers).

If they just didn't like it, I'd understand, but they just can't seem to get their heads around it.

Admittedly I have had one person who was at least intrigued enough to want to keep trying it. (Of course this was at my work group, and that person has a job elsewhere now).

I haven't given up yet. I love the game.

I love this game as well but have had difficulties with new players grasping the concept of how to win tricks by bidding under the imp (and when they should start *not* winning tricks when the imp's value gets too low).

I till remember one memorable game where, 75% of the way into it, another player exclaimed out loud: "Oh, I get it now - you need to get the highest value beneath the imp to win the trick!" robot This was after me having already explained that mechanic specifically 3 times over.

Nowadays I usually start off by giving a quick summary of the Stevenson' short story it's based on, which usually helps a bit.

Gameplay in Bottle Imp is super simple. Much more boiled down than Haggis, and certainly more straight forward than Chronicle. The implementation of the theme is very clever.

After the initial setup of putting a card each in for the negative points, and passing a card to each neighbor, you simply play a card. A lot in this game depends on the initial deal, so much so that I wonder if after several more plays the game will start to feel like it plays itself. If you get mostly high cards you'll most likely be safe from the negative points, but you'll be fighting for any tricks. If you get mostly low cards you can control the game, but most likely you'll sacrifice doing so to unload your lowest cards whenever you can. Any hand that's not extreme should just need a little finesse to make it work. The question is will the game allow for players of equal ability to feel like they're playing a calculated game of tempo with maybe a spot of push your luck? Or will it feel like more luck of the deal than not after several plays? There are enough people with 10+ plays to suggest that it at least has some legs.

I enjoyed it. I'm up for another go.

To finish off I introduced Rob and James to another card game.

"You have to follow suit but the highest card wins the trick regardless of suit unless someone plays a card below the current price of the bottle imp in which case the highest card below that value wins." Or something like that.

James scored in the 50's all three hands. Rob ended up with the bottle imp the first two. Unfortunately for James he was dealt a disastrous last hand and got stuck with the imp which allowed Paul who had scored in the 30's each time to sneak home by a few points.

You know you only lose the points on the 'imp's trick', right? It's usually not more than about 10.

Paul (Hiko), Ian, Aram and I played. First time for me. I thought it was interesting, and worth playing again. Paul (Hiko) won...though it is worth noting that he was the only one of us who knew what he was doing in this game. Well Mark, in the audience, also knew...arrrh

Just one hand of this for Andy, Paul, Andrew-B2, and me-- an interesting little trick-taking game that would take a few plays to get your head around.
