Well, I FINALLY got in some gaming this month! I had a weekend of Toon Con in Saskatoon!

Friday

I started off Friday night looking for some open gaming. In the end I joined 7 Wonders since I couldn't find anything else. I like it ok but I do not seek it out. WE played with a full seven players.

The time slot allowed for another game this time with leaders. This was the first game I played with Leaders. It does add a nice bit to the game.

There was a little more time before my next 'signed' game so a friend from Saskatoon, Darryl Ferster, taught me Star Realms. Not bad. A more conflicting version of Dominion with a space theme.

I was signed up for Vegas Showdown with 3 others, a game I had played once before and liked. It was good to play again.

The 3 players wanted to play 7 Wonders afterwards because there was still time to play a game before the next slot. I really did not feel like yet another game of this but decided it was better than no game at all.

My next signed up game was Steampunk Rally. I figured I might like this and I did, however, not as much as I thought. We played with 8 players, all new to the game. I think I might like it a lot better with less players and more experience.

Saturday

I had some interest in Food Chain Magnate and since it was offered I signed up. There is a LOT to think about here. I found that a hall filled with gamers and no sound acoustics proved to be abad place to try and learn this. I would give it another go but when I was asked for the second game in this setting I said 'no.' Maybe another time.

Again I found myself in "open gaming" mode and could find no one available, so, again I joined a "sign up" game, this time, Kingdom Builder. I actually helped the guy running it and taught it to 3 other players. WE played the base game only.

The time slot allowed for a second game which my newbies were eager to play.

Another open slot and , again, no one available, so I joined Roll For the Galaxy. I have played before but, somehow, this game and me don't entirely "click". Still it is not a bad game.

After this game was the auction. 284 games where auctioned. I had 5 in it and made out not too bad. Money for more games!

I had been signed up for learning Firefly, but my head was not up to another new "big" game, so I joined a game of Castles of Burgundy, a game I never would say no to. I played with 3 other experienced players and it was a close game.

There was time for some open gaming and this time IF found my friend Darryl F who suggested Bang the dice game. We played once as a 2 player and then had another join us for the second game.

I then joined a game of Small World. Of the five players our scores were 72, 85, 87, 88 and 91. Close game! I was the 88.

Sunday

Sunday morning I learned Dominant Species. This was probably my favourite game of the weekend. I kept seeing similarities to El Grande, which is also a favourite of mine. I do not seeing myself getting this since it is too long, but I sure would play it again. Our game had 1 hour of teaching and 4 hours to play. 4 hours seemed little long, but it was still very enjoyable experience.

This was the game I most wanted to play of the entire weekend. It was also a game I very much enjoyed but my experience was a little less than the previous one.

16 games played this weekend.

If you like area control, it may be worth taking a look at Dominant Species. It has two different types of area-control overlapping, driven by a somewhat Euro-ish worker-placement mechanism. But the resulting conflict levels don't feel all that Euro.

I've cooled on Dominant Species a tad since last year, but I'm still amazed at how great this game is. El Grande would be much higher on my list if not for this game, which I feel does area control in a similar but better way. This game does an excellent job at simulating a constant struggle against other animals in a harsh environment. There is a lot going on in this game, but it all works incredibly well thematically. I also recently purchased the custom meeples to replace the cubes, and I'm looking forward to getting them to the table soon. This game can be really long, but the time flies because of how much fun this is to play.

Attended a small but very well-run local convention this weekend, so lots of games on Friday & Saturday.

Wednesday

Keltis: Das Kartenspiel - Happy Meeple. Won pretty handily.

Thursday

Tyrants of the Underdark x2

Role-playing night was cancelled so we played Tyrants of the Underdark with three players. Two of us had played it before, so we played the
first game with the recommended initial decks (drow & dragons). I got a great assassination engine going and ended up with a lot of armies in my trophy hall and scored quite a few in-game victory points. I won by about 20 points with ~100 2nd and 3rd being very close. We decided to play another game with the other two decks (demons & elementals). The outcasts created by the ghouls we drew early greatly slowed our progress and we struggled to clear the neutral player. Final scores were in the low 40s and I lost by 1 pt. The outcasts definitely clog up the decks and slow progress.

Friday

Escon Day 1

First, I had a really good time meeting fellow gamers. Escon is just about playing games, so I took Friday off and got there as it was just getting started. Steve, the organizer, does a fantastic job and introduce me immediately to several other people looking to get a game started and volunteered to teach us the game the others were interested in playing.

Africa x2

A older Reiner Knizia game of exploring Africa. I came in last both games which probably indicates there probably a little more to it that I was seeing. It's an interesting combination of 3 types of in-game scoring, set collection and resource majorities. I'd play it again, but wouldn't seek it out for play.

Concordia with Concordia: Salsa x1

Played a 5p game of Concordia on the Imperium map with Steve V, David, Ian and Brandon (?). This was my second game, so I did have a better idea of how the cards and map board linked together. We played with forum card and I got a benefit one spending one less sestertii per city placement. This enable me to spread my influence pretty wide and I was able to score 90 points off Jupiter and Saturn cards which lead me to a comfortable victory. I really enjoy the tension between reacting to the current board state and the end-game scoring. I liked the impact of Salt, I'm neutral on the Forum tiles, but did think they added some variation.

Via Nebula

Played this new game from Martin Wallace with Steve, David and Jason. I've heard about Wallace, but never played any of his games but I do know this is one of his lighter games. Theme is kind of odd, but I like the game play. It's a route building, resource collection and contract completion game but a pretty simple one that plays in about an hour. I like the fact that the resources and routes and shared resources so that you can capitalize on others efforts. This is offset somewhat by the bonuses that the developers and route builders received in victory points for their efforts. I enjoyed it and it was my favorite new to me game of the convention.

Grand Austria Hotel

Played a four-player game of this newish Euro with Jason teaching Erik, David and me. My first comment would be that a 4p game has too much downtime especially due to the snake turn order. Lot going on here and I did very poor job of implementing a solid plan. I think the staff cards are much more important that I realized early, so I was just falling farther and farther behind in getting guests into rooms as the game went along. We had a runaway leader, but he also did a fantastic job getting a really strong engine up and running quickly. It's a pretty standard gather resources to fulfill contracts euro with a pretty cool dice action selection mechanism, but I'd rather play Castles of Burgundy for a similar experience.

The Castles of Burgundy

Had a lovely three player game of Castles of Burgundy with David and Phil (?). I came in a distant second. It was my first time playing a non-starter estate which provided a new and interesting challenge which I didn't do a great job of solving.

Glory to Rome

Played a game of Glory to Rome with David and Steve to end the night. I came in 3rd as the game I couldn't get any building going early and about the time I got a small client engine running, the beginner finished the building which allowed him to steal clients into his vault. Probably the least enjoyable game of Glory to Rome, I've played so I had to downgrade the game a notch to a 7.5.

Saturday

Escon Day 2.

I wasn't planning on getting there first thing on Saturday, but I woke up earlier than I expected and got there about 15 minutes after it started. I spend most of the day playing games with David and his son Jude and had a wonderful time.

The Prodigals Club

Steve taught David, Jude and I this enjoyable game. The theme is losing your money, your political clout and your friends approval. It's combination worker placement and card play game. The theme is creates some funny comments and lines throughout the game. The gameplay is interesting as your score is the thing you are best at games' end, so you need to work on destroying all aspects of your life equally well. Jude won but the range was pretty close.

Lancaster

I taught Steve V, David and Jude this game which I played quite a bit in 2013/2014, but hadn't play since early last year. I've forgotten how good this game is with four as my recent plays have been with three where the game isn't nearly as tight. You can claim spots with your knights (workers), but knights have varying strengths and certain location require minimum strengths for placement and stronger knights can bump weaker knights from spaces. There's a wonderful escalation of battling over prime spots which can be enhanced by spending resources to add to a knight in those contested battles. Steve won based on his nobles and army strength.

Dominant Species

I had about a 20 minute lull between games and was trying to find a common game to play when someone pulled Dominant Species off the shelf and I offered to teach it as it's my favorite. I was a five player game with four beginners whose names I'm embarrassed to say I'm struggling to remember (Walt, Ben, Phil?, Jason?). I've taught this quite a few times so I was able to do the walk-through in about 20 minutes. I taught the variant for the shorter game dropping the action pawn dominance cards. We dropped the arachnids and plunged in.

The game itself went a little long as we didn't select many dominance cards in the early rounds so the game went a turn or two longer than I had expected.. I was playing the mammals and saw all my dominance got wiped out and meat was conspicuously absent from the abundance and wanderlust fields. Reptiles end up winning and I finished last as I really never got a good plan going. Second time I've played with five and it reminded why I think the games is best with four.

Tumblin-Dice

After playing such a heavy game, Phil (?) and Ben proposed playing a palette cleanser and we played this light but fun dice game. I pulled out a second place finish, but it was nice to play something light.

Five Tribes

David and Jude then offered to teach me Five Tribes. I enjoyed my play though I can see the risk this game would carry among highly AP players. I did well in money collection but not so well claiming tiles. Jude rushed the end of the game due to his assassin, but David won a narrow victory over me as my large money carried me closer to victory than I had expected. Interesting game, I don't know if I'll pick it up, but would be happily to play it again.

Notre Dame

David, Jude and I had time for one more game so I offered to teach Notre Dame. I had played it once back in 2014 and I remembered it was pretty easy to grasp, but I messed up one of the rules so it caused us to have to correct some items mid-play. David and Jude ended up a few points apart with scores in the lows 60s/high 50s where I had mid-40s since the plague did me one turn early.

I had a great time playing and talking games over the weekend. I want to thank Steve and his crew of organizers for doing a wonderful job!

We had one of the best weekends for gaming in a while. 8 games played overall!

Friday night we started out with a game of Alchemists with the husband and parents. Parents were a bit foggy on the rules since the last time we played so they weren't up to another full game, but I managed to convince my mother to play a game of Race for the Galaxy with me. Not so heavy I know, but its hard for me to convince anyone to play this one with me as it doesn't really resonate with anyone I play with.

Saturday the real fun began as we kicked off day one of our five player long weekend board game marathon with friends. We started out with an intense game of Dominant Species. C came in first - his first DS win ever actually. Y and L wanted a rematch, but my brain can't handle two games of DS back-to-back... yet (once we get it down to 2.5 hours I'll reconsider my stance there). We went on to play two games of Scythe. I'm starting to really like this one, but I'm not sure the group does as much. I won the first game and C the second (I forget which factions were used!).

Day two we started out with another game of Dominant Species (we are still taking over 4 hours per game here...). L won this one and things got pretty aggressive (yes there was some Y and L yelling involved) when L's well played card wiped out the majority of C, Y and my species early on. I really need to get meaner in this game We finished off the night with two games of my beloved Terra Mystica (still my fave game for 4-5 players). I won the first playing as Chaos Magicians (playing against L as Alchemists, C as Fakirs, Y as Swarmlings and H as Witches <- her first game of TM ever!). C won the second as Engineers playing against L as Darklings, H as Nomads, Y as Auriens and myself as the Cultists (why does no one ever want to take power from me? ).

Overall an amazing time for all and C was crowned the ultimate winner with 3 wins to my 2 and L's 1 (which is indeed momentous since Y typically wins 90% of the games we play )

This is my favorite heavy Euro; it's the epitome of so much to do and so little time, but what sets it above other similar worker placements are the player abilities (providing some strategy through asymmetry) and the extra challenge of the incoming Ice Age. The actions are very well-balanced as well and the game is so juicy with strategy. If only it weren't long (for a Euro, at least), I'd probably be able to play it more.

A lot of competition and elimination, greater complexity, modular board.
