About 7 turns in. "Oh my. I see what he did. Aaagh this is so good. This just beat Arena Roma II Honey! This just beat Arena Roma II!"
"You get to activate but you control it," I say. "Or you go with the flow." She replies "Settle down you are scaring the cats."
"This game is wonderful and I have an expansion."
"Look how the theme works that machine is no good anymore."
"I'm in love with it. Please oh please play it with me again."

84 Last Night on Earth: The Zombie Game x 74 Innovation
Preliminary Rd 1: d. Vikings - 87 x 84
Comment: After taking down the toughest opponent in the Pre-Rd1, now it's time to shoot the zombie in the head.

Oh, Asmadi games, I have the Playtest games... oh, no. This wasn't as easy as I thought. I'll just re-read the instructions again til it clicks or I go mad.

I am not 100% certain I sold this after I was laid off, but I believe I did, and it was definitely around this time. I hate hate hate this game - this might be one of my biggest disappointments in the board gaming hobby. I expected something more reminiscent of Glory to Rome, but was overwhelmed with a feeling of frustrated non-strategy. Having said that, I do love the icon mechanic, as in, the number of icons you have showing dictates your options, and can change as cards are played. I had decided after the second game that I did not want to play again (I did, to essentially help teach it at bgg.con), and certainly did not need to own it.

Two things killed my interest in playing this: the game didn't sound that interesting from the rules (I tend not to like games that have a lot of specialized cards or tiles, e.g. Caylus, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Race for the Galaxy, etc.) and I wasn't impressed by my playing of the designer's other title, Glory to Rome. So I figured his "handwriting," as Reiner Knizia puts it, was not something I wanted to read more of.

Magnate x 1
One of the closest possible finishes for this game: we each claimed 2 of the 5 territories, tied on the 5th, then she won the resources tiebreaker: 13-12.
Notre Dame x 1
2-player game with Kat. I decided to see if focusing on the Hotel was viable. It doesn't seem to be. I grabbed for points every chance I got and kept my resources very light. Light enough that I missed a round because I didn't have any mans left. I lost.
Blood Bowl Team Manager: The Card Game x 1
Kat's elves defeated my chaos team 35-22. Afterward she admitted that she doesn't care for the game as much as I do. Time to take it to the game shop and see how it plays at higher counts.
Helvetia x 1
New to us last week, we agreed that we can see the appeal but don't really enjoy it. It'll be mailed out to Jon this week.
Innovation x 2
I branched out a bit last Wednesday and didn't play with my usual group; instead I taught Innovation to a couple of the Magic players and it went over very well. One of the guys has joined us for some games in the past and I feel like I can convert him. Innovation was a hoot.
The Resistance x 2
I also taught them The Resistance. Which led to...
Werewolf x 5
They taught me Werewolf. The headcount as between 6 and 9, and it was pretty fun (considering I didn't really know any of the players). I can see why it's so popular, though I prefer The Resistance; it has more in-game information to base accusations on, it doesn't have the "You were arbitrarily chosen to die first so you don't get to play" problem, and it keeps the paranoia and betrayal intact.
Hanabi x 1
Also played with the Magic players on Wednesday. This is one of the games I've taught him previously, and he's a big fan. We finished with 15 which seems to be par for me.
Agricola (I deck) x 1
Kat and I played. I had broken cards and her cards were ever-so-slightly more broken. She won 44-43.
Stephenson's Rocket x 1
Kat and I played for the first time in a long while. Good game with a damper on it at the end; I completely forgot about the rule at the end of the game where, if a city isn't connected up with any railway lines, then that city's goods are discarded. She had focused on picking up goods throughout the game, and having to discard several of them probably cost her the game. I won $85,000-$78,000 with an asterisk.
There's been a lot of turnover with my collection lately; newly acquired are: Bus, Markator and Navegador. Lords of Waterdeep should be arriving soon (I'm trading Helvetia for it).
I'm also having yet another game auction. Leaving the nest are Vikings, Thunderstone, Haggis, Blue Moon City and Gangster. Brass and Factory Fun just left also.
We've had sickness around the house for the last few days (yet again). I think it's between daughter having school regularly for the first time combined with the mild weather (it never stayed really cold for more than a day or two at a time this winter) has been the root. We're exhausted here. Levi has a runny nose and bad cough, and he's been having trouble sleeping and very grouchy - which is unusual, he's usually a very happy baby even when he's ill.

This is for the taller box version of Innovation. Played a few times and still in very good condition.
This also includes the expansion still in the shrink wrap, brand new: Innovation: Echoes of the Past

My civilization has definitely discovered some cool ideas that seem to really be working out, but if yours are cooler and they work harder then you've done well. Thanks for playing and beating me so bad.

My second choice for a game I went into with little/no expectations was Innovation. Holy crap do I love this game. It gets a bit too chaotic with 4, but I've REALLY enjoyed every play of this game so far. Card artwork is pretty drab, but the fun plays and memorable games it's created has me reaching for this game more and more. Easily one of my favorite games I've discovered since boardgaming.

What makes innovation great is your ability to mess with your opponent. The game plays best with 2, and you're constantly aware of your opponent and their abilities.
Steal cards from their tableau and put them in your score pile? Check. Steal cards from their score pile and put them in your score pile? Check. Force them to take a random card and put it over one of their 5 existing top cards, potentially destroying their strategy? Check.
Having all this done to you? Priceless.

After my friends had started on their drive home I decided to try to finally get that missed game of Innovation in. I put the orange cone up with the box next to it and waited. I had an offer to join another game. But I didn't want to learn anything new.
Eventually a guy walked straight to the table and started taking his back pack off. When I asked him if he had played before he said that he ran the Innovation tournament at last year's GameStorm. Having won that tournament, I just sat there and stared at him speechless.
"I've grown a beard since then," he said.
I'll say he had. Impressive stuff.
Anyway, he hadn't played the Echoes expansion yet, so we set it up and did a quick run through. He only had half an hour since he wanted to go watch the board game movie. We didn't play a full game. But I felt good having showed him the expansion. It's probably best that we stopped early. The cards were coming my way and I was most likely going to destroy him.

If the card isn't helping you, it's definitely going to hurt your opponent. Taking their cards and messing with their tableau is part of the fun!

Jason played twice and lost twice apparently

I still think it's a 2 player game really but still enjoyed 3p for a change.

Neil, Kevin, Nathan
The game at the other table ended when we were still half-way through Elder Sign, so they played a REALLY fast game of Innovation. Neil won, and, if I remember right, brutally so.

This is such a great, and dare I say it, innovative card game. Over two dozen plays and I'm still discovering new tactics. Very easy to teach and play, and it's cheap too!
